alright...she just won't listen to me...holly is such a b*tch...lol..no I bought a nice holly last week and have spent the last week regretting it. doesn't fit onto the rig easily,...does anything ever!!.. and i have remodeled the throttle cable and the throttle cable bracket to make it work...but it looks shabby. also a large vacuum line runs off the left side of the carb (assume to brake booster line) and runs smack dab into EGR! so EGR has to come off!! will this be a problem?? read a little from "grim reaper" on that and sounds like it might be. also I think the carb came of a manual because there is no way to hook up the kickdown cable...another thing I will remodel and hope to see it work!!! ugh...I didn't really want to get into this deep of a remod yet...just wanted to get a carb and this was the best deal I found!!

basic questions I have are:

is there an aftermarket throttle cable to convert from Q-jet carb to holly?
will blocking EGR cause major issues down the road? (don't have emissions)
is there an aftermarket bracket to attatch to this thing?
vacuum advance from distributor, does that plug into left sided small vacuum port?

I will post some pics when I get home...in between classes at school right now. thank you in advance for any help! right now it's a pain..hopefully be worth it in the end

I hate holly.

You can buy adapter type pieces for the throttle cable. When they're new the carbs come with an assortment of crap for that reason.

Blocking the EGR won't be a problem, I've done it on a few rigs.

There are spacers available at every part store in the world that will allow you to drop a real carb on a Qjet manifold.

vacuum advance goes on the passenger side of the carb.

I have the adapter plate...but I couldn't find any kind of linkage adapters or bracket adapters. blocking off the EGR..did you just mill a peice of metal to fit and seal it off or is there an actual plate you can buy?

you can buy a egr block off plate but a piece of steel works too. that's what i'm using

EDIT:

going to make a trip to the parts store tomorrow to see what they have. be nice if they have a complete adapter set that I just didnt' see..I have the ability to make my own..but not so much the facility. I have a torch but no welder and no metal working benches...hard to shape things if you have to pound against a cement floor!! lol. also I want to get this done ASAP...need the rig running before we get much more snow...my DD won't work in the winter

you shouldn't have any troubles finding one i wouldn't think.

what about the kickdown cable?? is there something I can get to make that fit? or am I stuck engineering a linkage? Right now the carb only has the throttle linkage on it.

i'd say you should probably find something that will work. you can get one from summit i believe. not too sure..

BTW i love the signature hahahahaha

I just made one from plate steel. If you have a torch you've got more than me... I used 1/8" steel, but that's what I had on hand. I wouldn't go below 1/16". But yeah, take off the egr and break it to the point of being able to use the bracket as a trace. trace it off and burn it out. Or, you could buy one. Much easier that way, and depending on your care, it's much nicer too.

Oh, and as far as a metal working surface, try to get a piece of rail road track. Use your handy torch on it and make an anvil, of course you need a welder too. Made one for my dad many moons ago. Works great.

the railroad tie is a nice idea..going to have to keep my eyes open...I found a welder around here for sale...just a matter of getting funds to get it

i'd use the RR "track" myself. if you was to use the "tie" it'd be worse than using the concrete floor :D

Go to either Jegs.com or summitracing.com

I guarentee they have the exact brackets and adapters that you need.

Also I recomend not running your brake booster off the port in the carb. It was run like that on my truck and a friend recomended me to move the the line to the manifold vacuum source. Then use the port on the side of the carb for the PCV valve. I got a lot better and more consistant vacuum.

Don't get fustrated with Holley carbs. They are way better than the quadrajet crap. It take a lot more knowledge and patients to set one up though, however they are infinitely tuneable.

What Holley carb are you running?

Holly's are both better than a quadrajunk, and infinitely tunable, but you have to tune them indefinitely for them to stay good.

I'm all about the Edelbrock. At most you need to change needles, usually right out of the box they're ready to go with minimal air/fuel adjustment needed.

After I first setup my Holley, I only really need to make slight adjustments around the change of seasons due to colder or warmer weather. Other than that I dont ever need to touch my Holley.

you are a lucky one. I've known of only a couple of holly's to be as nice as yours. Every other one I've known constantly needed adjustment. ~ once a month or so. I've never ran one due to that. That's a couple dozen over 10 yrs. Not big numbers, but I'm still young.

Never had a problem with Edelbrocks. easier to swap needles too.

i've already rebuilt my edelbrock. had no idea what i was getting into. not sure how it compares to holleys but there were a hell of alot of little parts in there

never really messed with carbs...I came into mechanicin late 90's so carbs are new to me. Adjusting my holly all the time and finding what works best through trial and error...might be a good thing...although right now all i want is for it to run!! headin to summit right now to look up adapters.
thank you

alrigth...just got done with summit..$60..found just about everything i needed...tried but they wouldn't sell me time!! I bought a bracket to mount the throttle cable...will look a lot better than the one I made. also bought the EGR block plate...cheaper than makin my own (ok maybe just easier)...and last but not least a peice to install the kickdown cable...hopefully it will get here in 5 days or so and I can hear my beast run...been down due to this carb bs for about a month now!!
