holly problems

i've got video on my camera..i might just take a vid of it runin...can't wait to see if there is a huge difference with the holly..but I have to try and calm myself and think about other things....have to wait 5 days still!!!

well i got the mounting hardware it fits nicely...the kickdown adapter they sent me was wrong but I went explorin in all the part stores here in town and found a kickdown stud for an edelbrock and it fits the same diameter for my holly..oh and a fuel line....had to buy a new fuel line to give her some gas!! now all that is done...my only snag now is that I don't have electric choke!! or at least I don't have a plug in for it...swear to god my old carb was electric....but there is no plug in...went back to my pictures to find out where the old one plugged in at and there isn't a plug...don't know where it got its juice from.

anyone help me here..if I can't find a source for the carb can I make one straight off any power line? or does it need some sort of relay? don't know anything about installing an electric choke...was runnin off the assumption I would be able to use the same line!

here are some pics of my old carb and the choke set up it had

I think I would almost choose EFI over any carb....except thats why I like my 80 Jimmy...I didn't want all the computers...Like bein able to just look at the engine and not have to worry about the computer....When I started turnin wrenches everything was already computer...wanted to play with somethin older!!

ok got all that together and then adjusted the timing to match the carb....it ran excellent!! made a huge difference....still didn't correct the problem of undergearing but at least the thing likes to move now!! but now I have another problem. I ran the thing for a good test drive down the highway..worked out perfectly! then I went and bought an air filter adapter so that I could reinstall the airfilter and started to drive to eugene. Made it 5 miles out of town and it started runin real rich! I turned around and looked at it but I was already running late so I jumped in my other rig and went to eugene. When I came back, looking at it, fuel is pouring out of the rear fuel bowl vent! What would cause this. The adapter that I had put on rubbed the linkage for the choke mechanism and held it closed. I took that off though and it didn't change anything. I am thinking that something internally must have went hay wire...but hoping someone with better knowledge of this than myself might know what happened

Check the throttle linkage, it might have binded on the secondary linkage and is holding the secondaries open slightly. Or the float might be stuck allowing fuel to poor out. Or your needle seats are bad and allowing fuel to pass.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Holley's. Get used to it.:D Your float or needle valve is stuck.

I ran a holley for about 6 months, biggest POS I've ever bought for my truck. Tuning was constant, easily every two weeks. Off road was a complete joke.

Then in a flash of brilliance I got rid of the holley and got an Edlebrock 1406. Tuned it once and forgot about it...but still brought the suck off road. If I ever have another carb it'll be a truck avenger or a new Q-jet. Most likely a new Q-jet.

Of the three the Holley made the most power, then the Edelbrock and then the Q-jet...

after running all three of the "mainstream" carbs for several years each - the holley makes, by far, the most power the Q jet makes least power and the edelbrock is the easiest to work on. the truck avenger is the best offroad-period! The deal w/ holleys is that they are very precise - when you tune them perfectly, they only run perfectly if the weather is what it was the day you tuned it! the other carbs are more vague in the tuning and therefore arent as sensitive to weather changes. just my .02 cents

Thats true. On average I have to tune my Holley at the change of every season or so.

What kind of Holley did you have?

It is totally ovious thay all you guys that say q-Jets make the least power have never taken the time to learn how to tune one.
A properly tuned Q-Jet will run as good or better than any hollley or AFB/ EDL1406carb, on a stock or moderate build engine.
q-jets get better MPG, And practally run upside down. They dont call Q-Jets "Hillbilly injection" for no reason.
I would far better have a carb that ran good right out of the box than one that will need a bunch of tuneing, tweaking, fiddiling with. I dont like being on a 45 degree side hill and wondering cuz my engine is sputtering and stalling if fuel is leaking all over my manifold and my truck is going to catch on fire.
Much rather have a Q-Jet on top pulling all the way

I had my Q-jet tuned by a pro back in the day, and it did run really well for a year or two like that. Both the Holley and 1406 Edelbrock made more top end power than the Q-jet though...

The Holley i had was a 600 cfm with Vac secondaries and I can't recall the model number.
