ok so i have an open air filter. ya i know the worst setup you can have for a mud truck lol. anyway i want to put a snorkel on my blazer. im running a 4 barrel edelbrock carb. ok how do i attach something to the carb that will be water tight? where do you guys put your air filter? lets see your home made setups.

no one has one setup? what do you mud guys use to keep the air filter from clogging up with mud?

Since I've gone Efans I really haven't had an issue. Although I'm not running mud much anymore, but I had water up to the headlights a few times lately with no issues.

I cut the snorkel down on my air cleaner and bent the tabs so I can rotate any direction I want, I can point it at the dizzy if wanted.

Guy could use the stock cold air intake tube on one of these and run it into the fender. I was going to but never have.

You can also run a water proof pre filter as well. I've got an outerwears brand On a couple of my rigs. They are waterproof as well.

Sorry for the newb question but I those the snorkels were for the exhaust so water doesnt go up the tailpipe rather than air intake which is a couple feet higher up. Am i missing something?

yup, they are for the intake. I've never heard of anyone putting one on an exhaust system before.

But thats the part more likely to get flooded in high water, not sure why you wouldnt want that snokeed

As long as the engine is running, the exhaust is pressurized so keeps water from flowing in. The intake is sucking, so it will suck water right in.

Really? Ive heard of cars getting stuck in water due to water going up the tailpipes

Keep it running.

Plus snorkel exhaust would be :sign9:
Lots and lots of military vehicles have a snorkel system for their exhaust, How dare you call them :sign9: !!!!!

Back to the intake, My intake runs through the firewall and the air filter is under the pass side dash

Keeping water out of the engine intake is absolutely critical to keeping it running and not ruining it from hydrolocking. As said above the intake is sucking in air and will also suck in any water present. For the exhaust, as long as the engine is running it is blowing exhaust out the tailpipe with no way it can suck water in. Having the tailpipe under water can decrease performance or even cause the engine to stall because it is causing a restriction in the exhaust (think sticking a banana in the tailpipe:whistle:). However in my days of off-roading I have seen lots of vehicles with their tailpipes under water and never seen anything more than the engine stalling and they have to restart it. On the other hand I have seen many engines stalled out because of water getting into the intake and a few with serious damage from water in the cylinders (bend/broken connecting rods, etc...).

now this is what i was looking for thank you. i have ac so i wouldnt go through the firewall like that but i love the setup. so it looks like you cut up a stock filter housing to use on the carb correct? did you just use some sheet metal to make it taller like that?

yes that happened to my son in his 88 burb. he stalled out and his driver side tail pipe was under water and his front end was slightly lower then the back so when it stalled water went up the tail pipe and got in the rear 2 cylinders on the drivers side of the block. i had to pull him out and we pulled all the plugs and cranked it over till the water was out. put the plugs back in and fired it up. lucky he didnt bend any pushrods. now if the motor wouldnt have stalled out he would have been fine

Mine is TBI but yeah we used the original base and top of the air cleaner housing. That's some flat steel we had lying around. First it was bent around an old brake rotor to get the dimension pretty close, then it was clamped & welded to the old air cleaner pieces
