Now go ask the CHP who has the power over DMV.

EDIT: My buddy just went through this with a body/frame swap. DMV says register the body, CHP says register the frame, guess who won CHP
Ok... then what would happen if someone swapped frames? You wouldnt register the frame VIN number I dont think that sounds wierd since everyone always checks the dash etc and I dont even know where the VIN is on my frame

CHP issues a new VIN number for the body based on the frame VIN number. That will make both VIN numbers match.

What would happen if the frame VIN isnt there? Such as an unfortunate grinding incident where it fell out of my hands and accidentally hit the frame :D

You can grind the numbers all you want, etching acid WILL bring it back and the CHP WILL check for the numbers. If no numbers are found then you won't be registering anything. This is the same way that ATF finds serial numbers on guns that have been "ground off" or welded over.

Oh ok, I wasnt planning on doing it I was just wondering. So hypothetically, if someone replaced their frame the CHP gives them new VIN numbers? That sounds kind of weird, like I said I've never heard of the CHP checking frame VIN numbers. What happened with your buddy, why did he swap, what did he register, whatd the chp do, howd they find out, etc etc?

My buddy swapped a 79 scout body onto a 71 scout frame and now it's registered as a 71 scout. Nice to be able to get around the smog crap. :D

How does he register it with the dmv then? I got stopped by the rangers once at hollister hills and they looked at the inside VIN, I didnt think the frame VIN was that important. Where are the frame VINS supposed to be?

The dash VIN gets replaced with a new one that the CHP assigns to the vehicle.

Mine is on the driverside frame rail just behind the steering box.
I've looked for mine and cant find it there. Its dirty so maybe Ill just ahve to clean it enough. I highgly doubt the frame VIN will be a problem but even still I'd like to find it, who knows maybe its a smog exempt year for the frame and I never knew it :D

EDIT: ok I looked all over the frame, and I found the numbers 379334 and then underneath it 7 138 near the middle of the frame underneath the door on the passenger side. Then on the drivers side it ahd the same numbers except "140" instead of "138". I found nothing on the bottom of the frame and have yet to look on the inside which I'll do now.

EDIT2: Ok I've looked. Everywhere. Nothing else. I did notice my frame is green on top behind the steering box and in the same area on the other side...interesting. Green like a weird green, not a paint green. I guess you can never really know whats underneath all that dirt sometimes
