Horse power??

If it is, that looks like it might be a pain to run the EGR to. I see where the valve sits, but I can't even guess where it gets "fed" the EGR from. The large hole next to it looks more like a coolant port.

Not to mention the ridiculous cost.

Has anyone pointed out that some aftermarket heads will probably save you money? Get something with the standard exhaust crossover, standard intake bolt pattern, an intake that has EGR on it, and go from there.

Yeah, I'm sure there's money to be saved. I have an old 2bolt 350 from an 87 I had and I'm sure I could do something with it. I just don't want to build a motor at this point. I'd rather buy a nice long block that is ready to go. Find an induction system that will work.

I'm thinking that the EGR could be fed from the ehaust manifold since there are stock GM manifolds for that as well. I really would like a set of hedman shorties. The 61498s look good but they have the AIR injection pipes on them. I don't need that. It would be nice to find a set that had an EGR and O2 port/bung on them with out AIR pipes. I could weld those on but then would have to get them recoated.

If you want to buy something essentially turn key, have you checked out TBIchips.com.

http://www.tbichips.com/lknspeed.htm Brian (at tbichips.com) referred me to these guys, as at one time, Brian was talking about marketing tuned turn-key engine combo's.

I can't view the dyno run here, is the header vs. manifold difference as large as I expect?

The stock 350 from this vintage is a turd. Probably better used as a boat anchor. Definetly not a motor for towing.

195hp out of a 5.7L V8 is disgraceful :(

At one time I might have argued, but the trucks this vintage were 195hp/300 ft lbs at 2800RPM (according to above info).

A 1991 Camaro was 245@4400/345@3200

Not to turn this into a current events thread, but there is little reason to wonder why American automakers are hurting nowadays when they did things like that. Other than cost, there was no reason they couldn't put the Camaro motor in the trucks, and it would have blown the competition away.

That's 195/300 HP/TQ new at the flywheel. Now put that through the 4l803/NP241/14bsf and what do you have in a 3600 lbs suburban that is 18 years old trying to pull a 3200 lb boat? I'll tell you. You floor gas peddle, turn the A/C off and still only does 45 up hills while overheating!!

Once I get a price on getting the 350 TBI honed out and 454 injectors priced with the $367 GM mainifold I might end up just spending the $999 on the Edelbrock 3505 Multipoint EFI system.

We'll see.

Could someone school me on EGR? I know what it stands for but does it need to be there for any other reason other then Smog Laws? I live in Alabama we don't have inspections and I'll never move back to Calif for any reason.:haha:

Can I just not install it and have that programmed in the new chip?

EGR helps to reduce cylinder temps which in turn helps to keep the engine from detonating (pinging). It is not needed if you can keep the engine from pinging.

Yes you can get by without it. It is illegal at the Federal level to remove it (or any emissions device) however who would ever know, I suppose depends if you move.

That's the only real downside...selling or moving, either way emissions are a million times harder to put back than remove, usually at a decent cost. Not SO difficult with TBI, but still difficult. In some states/locations vehicles must be smog tested before transfer. There are a lot more locations than just CA doing this, but even in CA it's not across the entire state.

Programmed out of the chip, it's gone.

It does probably minimally help to allow less fuel consumption (as it displaces air/fuel in the chamber) however it's main purpose is of course to meet emissions requirements.

What's the CFM on the stock TBI?

470cfm I believe.

Why do you want to pay for machine work when you could just buy a 454 tbi with injectors? Should be able to have a tbi with injectors/manifold combo for a little over 500 new. It'd be alot cheaper if you got a 454 tbi from a junker and bought new injectors.

That's why this post had me .

Your burb weighs 4500 according to that link... 8600 is the maxx gross weight meaning the weight of your rig with as much chit as you can throw in the back of it.

Yeah the 3600 was a guess, I wa off by 1000 lbs. If I ever get another 4k of wieght in the burb it will just die.

Well, I've pretty much settled on a 383 using the GM intake, some Hedman shorty headers. That should be somewhere around 435+ TQ and it starts about 2200 from the dynos I saw.

Anyone know anything about the holley TBIs? the 502-6 is a 670cfm unit with 80 PSI injectors. I'd probably need a new pump and PSI spring somewhere around 18 PSI.

A few extra ponies , and lots of torque is where its at . Last year going to Moab , no one ever complained I was going slow this time .

Just a 350 vortec with 250hp in a Sub with a 4l60e , 3.73's , and 235/85/16's . Towing a flat trailer with two axles , with a K5 based 1/2 ton truggy on top . Felt so good not being at the back with the 305 K5 trying to tow :D

You can find 55 horsepower and a few more foot pounds pretty easy .

You got to get good flow in , through , and out . Then you remove as much friction as you can .

You pegged it right on the head. I have an 87 k5 blazer with a fresh rebuild and 4.56 gears and a 700r4. The only way I make it up is his is with the transmission in second and the pedel floored. I can tow my boat at 45 max up the hill.

I've recently put headers and a new chip from Brian on my blazer I'm hoping to at least be able to hit 3rd and do 50 up the hill but I doubt it.

Anyone wanting to rebuild one of these motors and use it as a tow vehicle is wasting there money. If I had to do it again I'd go with a nice newer 6L out of a wrecking yard. I wish someone would have told me this before I invested money into mine. I'm now contemplating nitrous or a used blower seriously LOL! Or maybe I'll tear the heads off and go an try and find some vortec heads. but I'm getting tired of dumping money into this pig and I'm not convinced it would help much.
