Horse power??

You pegged it right on the head. I have an 87 k5 blazer with a fresh rebuild and 4.56 gears and a 700r4. The only way I make it up is his is with the transmission in second and the pedel floored. I can tow my boat at 45 max up the hill.

I've recently put headers and a new chip from Brian on my blazer I'm hoping to at least be able to hit 3rd and do 50 up the hill but I doubt it.

Anyone wanting to rebuild one of these motors and use it as a tow vehicle is wasting there money. If I had to do it again I'd go with a nice newer 6L out of a wrecking yard. I wish someone would have told me this before I invested money into mine. I'm now contemplating nitrous or a used blower seriously LOL!

I was close to puting some vortec heads, cam and getting a chip done to this. I'm pretty glad I changed my mind. This is a long term vehicle for this family so I'd rather just toss the cash at it now and be done with it.

I've been down the road of trying to do it cheaply and end up with something you weren't happy with. Screw that, I'm going for it with this one. :haha:

Ya I did the cam, new chip, roller rockers, headers, flat top pistons everything minus the vortec heads even had a complete rebuld done on the 700r4 transmission. Going a different route is money well spent.

If my damn Range Rover transmission wasn't $5000 to rebuild I drive my blazer over a cliff and be done with it LOL I use my blazer to primarily tow my boat cause the transmissions are so cheap in comparison.

Good luck with your project and keep us updated.

Here's what I got in mine: 350 "K" code engine with the Holley 670cfm TBI/80 lb injectors, Edelbrock Performer TBI manifold, open element filter (not the stock housing and tube, but not "cold air" either), Mallory (IIRC) 50k volt coil with silicone plug wires and Bosch Plat +4 plugs, Hedman shorty headers, 2.5 in true dual (no crossover, but maybe in the future) cut short in front of the rear tires, no cats, serp belt conversion with dual alts and OBA, Ranger OD, SM 465 and a 10b w/3.73 gears all packed into an 88 R10 Burb. I just towed a 5500lb+ travel trailer up the Wyoming hills and was still able to maintain 50mph before I realized the brake controller was jacked and dragging the trailer brakes (which I think caused two of my three tire blow-outs:eek1:). Even on the Nebraska flats I was able to keep 65mph in a headwind and 7-8 mpg.

So to say that the TBI 350 is worthless I guess is all on how you you want to build it. I've never taken this truck to the dyno, but I can tell you that it will pull pretty well with the trailer and can fly down the road as fast as you can shift gears without the trailer.

I have a holley 670 cfm tbi with the biggest injectors (85pph IIRC), Holley projection 2" manifold, Holley tbi fuel pump, and a prominator (so you can custom tune your fuel curve and other parts of the computer). New condition barely used. Let me know if your interested.

No thanks. I do appreciate the offer though.

Does anyone know what the recommended thermostat is for these Vortec motors?

I think they all run 195* thermostats. Maybe some of the Lx series motors use different, but my setup runs a 195*.

dyeager535 where abouts in seattle do you live. Any good places to go wheeling out there? My sister lives up there and I may make a trip to see her new baby.

Well the only place on this side I know is Reider (SP?) pits, up in Kennyw's neck of the woods.

There is also the Naches, but its on the other side of the mountains. Sorry, not so much of a wheeler.

Probably shouldn't take this off-topic anymore though. Might check out Krazyk5.com, since you aren't a member here you can't check out the regional forum I don't think. http://www.krazyk5.com/

Well, the water just got real muddy.

Scott and about everyone I have talk to says the Holley unit is crap. Mostly be cause they just tried to increase pressure to 80 lb injectors.

I talk to a guy at turbocity.com that said the 454s aren't the way to go. He said the 75 lb injectors are to much when only increasing 33 cubic inches.

His take is to run the stock 61 injectors on a high flow 350 TBI unit that is 590cfm (honed to 46mm), bigger fuel pump, and a variably regulator.

Also, it seems there was a 68# injector that went into 87-92 Caprice but was dicontinued by GM that used to be perfect for 383TBIs.

I'm running a bored throttle body from CFM Tech and cop car injectors on my 383. I had my Edelbrock intake bored to match it. I'm happy with my 383. I LOVE the torque it puts out, but I think if I were doing it again I would just swap an LQ9 6.0 in it with a 4L80E. I'd get double the gas mileage and it would have cost me less to do than it cost me to build my 383. You can find the motor and tranny with sensors and harness for <$2500 if you look around.

That is my sticking point right now, I can't find any of the 68# cop car injectors.

What fuel pump and pressure spring are you running?

Just got off the phone with the guys at CFM Tech and he thinks the 7.4l injectors are a better choice then the 61# 5.7s. He clued me to the HP rating on the big block was only 220 and I'm looking at 385.

I've another email into Brian ask for his recommendations. Well see, again.

18 psi spring. I got the injectors from www.injectors4u.com and I think it is a 255lph fuel pump. Its been a while since I pieced it together. Looking at Brian's site I probably need to go up to 454 injectors. Guess I need to data log. Time for a cable...

I just got Brian's last email.

He says the bored out 5.7l goes to about 620cfm max and that I should be running 7.4l 87-93 injectors so that's my final answer.

He also informed me that flow testing on 305, 350, and 94-95 454 injectors showed them to be drastically over rated.

Changing gears a litt on this now. Don't want to start an entirely new thread to ask,

Does anyone have any feedback on LMC 4 core radiators or want to suggest a place to pick up the 28 1/4 x 19inch 4 core with tranny cooler?

Buddy got one from radiators.com, had no complaints. I bought mine from Schucks because it has a life time warranty and they are local. It cools fine, but it's only a 3 core.

Well, all my goodies shipped out yesterday. I got my chip from Brian two days ago so it looks like I'm on for an upgrade next week!!

Sad part is it's supposed to rain over the weekend. I was counting on getting the old motor out Sat morning.

What did you finally decide to go with?

What did you finally decide to go with?

HT383, 620 cfm 5.7l TBI w/454 delphi injectors, hedman elite shorty, GM vortec TBI intake, TBICHIPS.com chip.

Gonna toss in a new 4 core rad, water pump, 195 thermo and hook up some stainless steel exhaust 2into1 w/flowmaster no cat, working EGR.

And lots of cold AC to boot! :haha:

Cool..I'm jealous I wish I was you right now. Wanna trade trucks after your done :D I have everything you were gonna do done to mine LOL

I think you will be much happier then you would have been with the 350. When you finish let me know how well it does towing your boat. I just may tear my motor out and start all over again.

Le'crate has arrived. I'm off to dinner and beers with the wife. I should get the old one out on Tue if the weather holds up.

DAMN! LMC radiators are plastic tanks on the side. If I would have known that I would not have purchased one!!!

Now I need a name brand radiator that does a 4 core that has copper sides on it.
