How bad will a front axle spool/locker be on-road?

Ah, I hadn't thought about the tire being stuck case. Would it still help in the wheel spin up case I described though?

Since you are up here int he armpit(Ohio) and you drive your rig on the street.... I'd stay open in the front and save up for an ARB or E-locker. A locked front on snow or ice could make for a bad situation.... It's even a little scary with an LSD(Truetrac) up front.

Ok, so I will save up for a selectable locker (I like the Ox-Lockers in theory, because if something should go wrong with the actuation system [like ripping off the line] I could make a mechanical system work, trying to deal with electricity or air pressure could be troublesome).

What happens that makes a LSD "scary" on ice/snow?

I run a spool in the front, I LOVE IT!! It is DA BOMB in snow. If I'm not turning quick enough all I have to do is blip the gas and it pulls it's self where ever I have it pointed :D I run in 3WD (1 hub unlocked) on the road when it's snowy or icey out, and have no problems there either. As for turning around, and turning the wheel :dunno: I'm not sure what problems others are facing, but I have none, it turns just fine for me :o

LSD will operate almost like a locker on really slick pavement, since both tires will be overspinning it'll send power equal to both of them, but when you hit a turn, just like with a locker, it'll plow forward rather than letting power off one wheel (like it would on dry pavement) and letting you turn. On ice it can't decide which tire is "loose"

My beater blazer is welded front(10 bolt) and rear(12 bolt) and I run 35" tires. I leave one hub unlocked for the easy stuff and when I get to a difficult spot I get out and lock the the other hub. It's cheap and works great, I try to not be hard on the gas when I have the wheels turned all to one side but besides that I wheel it pretty hard. I should mention though that I have taken a lot of weight of my truck and I only run a 305 which helps my diffs. survive.

If you weld or lock the front just get manual hubs and keep them unlocked when on the road, you shouldnt be running in 4wd anyways on the road.

I have a welded front, I can tell its welded but not enough to justify the $400+ for a detroit. I do have crossover and hydro assist so that helps alot.
I wheel mainly rocks and I can turn with my pinky finger in any position. Its the fast loose dirt that will hurt you with a welded front, you turn and the front tires are still getting the same amount of traction so it tries to push you forward. BUT with a little skinny pedal you can get the back end to do the steering :D

Interesting that now people are coming back with good feedback for a welded/locked front end.

How often do those of you with locked/welded front ends drive on the road, or are your trucks just trail rigs (no offense intended if they aren't).

yeah that is definately interesting, guess i don't know what i'm talking about then,,,,,

weld it, find out for yourself,,,thats what i did anyways...and ruined a completely good carrier on top of it... :waytogo:

i misread your post, thought you were joking around by saying you have a spare,,,,,,,and then my mind went blank, so i was thinkin about something else...

:doah: :doah: :doah:

:D :D :D

Mine is welded. As soon as I actually get to drive it I will let ya know what I think.

Then again I am twin sticked and have manual hubs too. I have been told if you are going to have one hub unlocked let it be the short side. The longer axle shaft is a little more forgiving. :dunno:

dude like I said with manual hubs and them unlocked on the street just the wheels are spinning so the locker or welded front doesnt have ANY thing to do with the driving characteristics(sp?).
Only thing either will effect is when the hubs are locked and you are in 4wd.

Say what ya want... Thats funny right there I dont care who you are =).
I have a spare carrier.............I have a scratch in the paint...LMAO.
When I read it I get this image of someone saying :Well woopty doo you have a spare carrier, I have a scratch in the paint! LMAO my g/f is lookin at me wierd cause i keep snickering the whole damn time i'm typing this! =)
Pheww I needed that laugh. Wow

I run a Detroit in the rear and a Lock Right in the front. On ice or snow covered roads it is the worst set up you can have. Two wheel drive you know what happens with Posi or a locker. 4wdr. you can't steer. Deep snow you can't beat it. :D On the trail I keep it in 2wdr until I hit an obsticle I know I can't make with out 4wdr. After the obsticle I go right back to 2wdr. Using a rear locker or welded in 2wdr your probably almost as capable as an open truck 4wdr.
A bunch of guys say they lock only one axle. Doesn't this pull badly to the locked side?

Well they do work good offroad. But on snowy and icy roads, it will suck!
