As the title states how big does a shock need to be for prerunning? Is a std bilstein and a bump better than a resivoir?
I would assume it depends on how long you want to ride for?

Our trucks, need a lot of dampening. Doesn't matter what suspension you are running, heavy means speed will heat shocks. Works them hard. I am running 3 inch triple bypass' at each corner. Can not put my hand on the shocks for very long, because they are hot.

If you are just cruising faster, not needed. But if you are truly running at speed, big freaking shocks are needed. Or a lot of repairs.

I suppose it depends on what you consider cruising..

What are you doing?
100 mph in the dunes?...

30 mph?

lots of woops?

big woops/small whoops?

Ive read many times that the best shock is the most expensive ones you can afford.

And I would consider air bumps a must have in a pre runner situation...

Honestly shocks are the thing you should not skimp on. How big does it need to be? As much as your wallet can afford.

I bought 4 of these for $700. If you watch the raptor forums. They sell these for aroud $250 ea. I just got a good deal I think.

At the moment I only have 2 installed on the rear. But they ride really nice, but they do need some more rebound valving. Bounces a little as you can see here.

And for short runs in the sand, they are fine. But I would not use them in a pre runner.

Pre runner definition = running 50 mph for an hour plus. This is my profesional opinion.:D

That's a good point. You can run our entire dunes in 15 minutes at half throttle:haha:

Cruising is what dueling and the Holton Hillbilly crew do in the dunes. Build it for what it will be used for.

Good questions, i typically will beat on it for 10-20 mins at a time. I dont plan on hitting any whoops over 1 ft mainly because i dont want to break the truck. I will haul ass on dirt roads kinda like rally style stuff or backroads. Basically if its smooth enough to haul then ill go fast. But in rough situations i dont plan on beating it.. So in short mostly trail stuff and some go fast with emphasis on comfort.

Until you realize you can hit 2 foot whoops. Just not well. Then the step up prosses begins. I had been in enough pre runners and class 1 cars to know what is available. Air time is a real hoot.

Hahaha well, I have no cage as of now, I jump the blazer a little already and it does OK.. still Ill leave the big whoops and that type of stuff to IFS trucks. Ill build something specific for this later on but for now I want something fun and reliable and nothing crazy..

We'll I ain't got that kinda cash! I was gonna have atlas built custom springs 12 inch travel front and 14 inch rear. And run some form of 2.0 shock either bilstein foa or fox... And buy bumps later and steering as cash allows..
