How do I wake up my truck? Update: Supercharger installed!

Longtubes are on!

My brother and I installed some pace setter longtube headers on my truck the other night along with an egr plug and an msd coil. It really woke the truck up, I think one or both of my cats may have been getting clogged. I'm getting the exhaust done friday, 3" back to a 50 series flowmaster with two 3" in and two 2.5" out. As soon as I hear back from Nelson performance I will be sending off my PCM to get it tuned for my mods. I will update with the results!

Well exhaust is done, I just ordered my PCM from Black Bear. I couldn't make up my mind on who to use but I've been reading that Nelson's customer service is better and that Black Bears tunes are better but neither one got back to me in a timely manner so I figured I would go with the "better tune" people. We will see what happens.

Alright, here is where I am at: I installed longtubes, msd coil, K&N air filter, plugs and wires, 3" dual exhaust, plugged the egr and installed a PCM from Black Bear performance. Last week I installed new injectors and that was probably the best thing I could have done. I had the old poppet style injection and the new injector spider has 8 injectors instead of 2 and the injectors sit down by the valves instead of behind the throttle body. Now the truck runs good, my mileage went up but only to 12 mpg. I am going to throw some O2 sensors in it and see if that helps and I am going to look at a powerdyne supercharger kit in the next couple of days and if everything is there and looks good I am going to buy it and install it. I think that will put me where I want to be powerwise and it will add mucho kool points.

Super charger is in but I need to get it tuned because it starts pinging in the higher rpms at WOT. It sucks to because I can really start to feel the power right before it happens.

Also, I have hydroboost brakes and I was suppose to tap into the 1/2" vacuum line on the brake booster for the FRU but I made my own 3/16" vacuum dick on the upper intake manifold from a piece of brake line. Will this provide enough vacuum signal to the FRU? If not what is the best way to tap into a good vacuum source?

I also have a 1/2 tank of 87, 1/2 tank of 91, and a bottle of octane booster in my gas tank and the manual says I need 92, the guy I bought it from said 91 is fine. What do you guys think? 92 is very hard to come by around here although I think BP used to sell it.

Where is the best place to tap into for a boost gauge?

Any other tips?

the top of the intake has a plug behind the throttle body. this can be poped out. then go to the junk yard and grab the same plug from a vac brake truck. pop it in and bam huge vac port just like thay wanted.

this is how i did my 1ton with hydro brakes vac port for vac gauge when i installed vac gauge/transtemp gauge on a piller.

super simple and easy to do. otherwise the vortec 96-2000 motors dont offer a real vac port option spot.

How can you drive it without a tune for the superchager? Sounds like a bad idea to me. Your airflow will be higher than what your MAF table goes to. Actually, how much flow can your MAF measure? Plus, there is probably no retard happening at higher boost. How much boost does it make?

As for octane - do you have a tool to measure knock? (audible doesn't count - that's way too much). Once the PCM is tuned you could just try the local pump gas and see if it's OK. If you are at high elevation, a little less octane will be OK. Around here I can find 91, 92, 93 and 94, depending on the station. Good gas is usually cheaper than octane boost - plus that stuff can take the paint off so it's better not to mess with it unless you have to.

The kit is designed to work with a stock truck, and mine isn't quite stock so I'm not sure where the problem is. There is a cheater box that plugged into the maf sensor wires and I don't think it is part of the kit but the guy gave it to me and my connector wouldn't reach without it. Plus the FRU increases the fuel pressure at the injectors (the more boost there is the fuel pressure it gets) I am just going to stay out of the throttle till I can burn off this tank of gas and then fill it up with 92, or I may burn off 1/2 a tank and go fill the rest will 100, they sell it a the pump at a citgo down the street from my dads house. I am afraid that it is leaning out at higher rpm and I don't want to burn up a piston or something.

What kind of numbers are you supposed to get with the supercharger alone on your 350? I'm thinking you would have been better with a Vortec 7400 swap with some minor tweaks.

blackbear tune is good. i have that for my truck. they do a retune for free. call em up or e mail justin at blackbear, and tell him u did some mods, including supercharger, then ofc u have to send ur pcm back to him and he will do a retune. DO that before u try to do any other work to make it run better with supercharger.

I didn't want to do a motor swap really, if I did I would have put a 12 valve in it. If I get the truck tuned right I think it will be comparable to a big block. Plus I already put headers and stuff on it so I didn't want to spend that money again. Plus, superchargers are kool.

Yeah I liked blackbears tune but since I have to send it off he really doesn't know whats going on with my motor. I just talked to house of boost here in KC and they said they can do a load dyno tune for around $250. ($100/hour X 2.5 hours) That way I will know everything is good and since I kept my stock PCM I can swap it back in and have it tuned and still have Justins for future tunes. If I would have known I was going to go FI I wouldn't have got the tune from Blackbear.
