How do I wake up my truck? Update: Supercharger installed!

You have a factory underpowered land yacht. That truck should never have had a SBC in them IMO.

Id have to agree, plowed snow at work with a 99 k3500 reg cab longbox with the vortec 350. (was well maintained) and it was no powerhouse thats for sure. could be a gearing deal too, I dont know that it had for a ratio. had the 14 bolt FF though.

if it's towing, I'd say some gears and a cam, dollar for dollar, way better than filters and exhaust

my 4.3 s10 is tuned with www.wait4meperformance.com I highly recommend because of their service and product. Cheaper than the Hypertech stuff, hands down better (from experience), and easier when it's your second PCM. I have my stock on in a box, in the garage. :)

How hard are the gears to change in the front end? The 14bff wouldn't be a big deal but I've never messed with the front of a IFS truck before. As far as the cam goes, I am still considering it but I am going to wait until I get exhaust and talk to one of the performance shops that I refered to earlier.

The casing comes apart easier. Pretty much the same, just a little more work for assembly. A diagram would help when you can see whats actually inside.

Course you could always SAS.

Ok well I'm sure I could have my mechanic do the gears in front, he's cheap and I may be able to trade for labor. I am using this truck more and more as a dd and I only tow maybe 5-10 times per year. Right now I think I run about 26-2700rpm at 70 with a 4L80E and 265/75/R16 tires. Maybe one of you gear heads can punch that in a calc and find out what gears I have. My truck did barely ok the one time I towed with it so if I can gain 50hp/50ft/lbs or so then I think I will be ok with the gears I have.

My short bed reg cab 1/2 ton won't spin a tire when you punch it off the line so don't get your hopes up :D

It is decently fast though

I've been wondering what I could do to increase the fuel mileage lately, I'm only getting around 14 mpg

Really the only things I could think of is cold air intake and exhaust

And the cold air intakes make noise and loud truck exhaust is annoying, so it's a tough choice :haha:

From what I have been reading, the sluggish non tire spinning is caused by torque management from the computer. Most people that have had their trucks programmed by Black Bear or Nelson are reporting that they have removed all engine torque managment and 75-80% of the tranny torque management and their trucks run like they never have before. I think that is what I am after so, so far that is the path I am on.

You might try it too because I guess it increases economy an average of 1-2mpg. That and a good tune up and you might get 17mpg depending on your driving habits. I am currently testing my economy right now after my tune up and upgrades. I will report my results when they are in.

My tow rig/dd is a 1996 K3500 crewcab long bed with the 5.7 vortec. I recently bought a trailer and now I need to get some pep back into the motor. It only has 102,000 miles and runs fine but seems very doggy off the line. 0-70mph is 18 seconds. :o It seems to me that the truck should at least be able to spin a tire when I punch it but it just doesn't seem to have the grunt. I am wondering if there is anything I can do to the the truck to wake it up, I want it to run like it did when it was new. I am wondering if changing out the O2 sensors and MAF sensors etc will make any difference. The truck isn't throwing any codes so I don't know what the deal is, just seems like it should be slightly faster. We are going to check the fuel pressure and some other things tonight but I don't think there are any problems there because it runs great in the higher rpm range. After I get the truck running well again I plan on installing an exhaust, intake and tuner to help pull my trail rig. Thanks guys!
Easy fix. Sell the truck and get something with a 454.

I've heard good things about Justin/Blackbear. I have a couple of friends that have had their trucks tuned by him and have nothing but praise

Interesting, at $200 and if it does what they really say it would definately be worth it. Maybe it could convince me to not want to want to do an ls1 swap :D

Alright guys, after a lot of research I think I am going to install full exhaust, high flow air filter (done), clean the MAF sensor (done), I check the plug wires and they look new inside and out, I cleaned the cap and rotor cause they weren't bad and then I am going to get a performance tuned PCM from Black Bear Performance or Nelson Performance (I haven't decided). My buddy has EFI Live and I know that is what BBP uses but I don't see that my truck is supported on EFI Live's site. If it is I may just buy a licence and try to tune it myself. Kind of a scary thought but if I jack it up I think I can reinstall the stock settings and if not I can send off my PCM. I don't have to have the truck running so it wouldn't be to bad to have to wait for the retune. Thanks for the suggestions guys, keep them coming if you have anymore.

I have efi live and I can tell you that it has to be a 96 and up OBD2 to tune it. and Tuning is NOT gonna make much of a difference unless you drasticly change its breathing. your most cost effective and noticable dollar spent will be regearing ;)

What is the tube for that comes from the back of my drivers side exhaust manifold and goes into my intake manifold? Do I need to keep it when I install long tube headers?

EGR. It screws into the intake manifold and crosses over internally to the pass. side where the EGR is. Yes you'll need it, unless you can do a delete within the computer. Then they make a plug from GM to cap the intake.

Cool thanks, thats what I was thinking but wasn't sure why it went into the intake like that. I'm sure they can delete it in the computer. Where can I get that plug you are refering to?
