There is a bracket that fits between the block and motor mount plate. The only way would be to lift it up, un bolt the plate from the block and slide it in. That's why I was wondering if they were critical or not so much.
 
I would say say they are beneficial but not critical as these were never used on a mech linkage clutch application (holes aren't there). That said, there's obviously some reason engineers felt they should be there.

They will be a PITA to install now but I'd say they're worth it.
 
I'm thinking I can lift one side of the engine at a time and squeak them in. Either that or I'll throw some bar stock in the lathe and make something that bolts to an existing hole on the side of the block. Or possibly one that utilizes the oil pan bolts.
 
Pain in the ass? I don't get it...

Pretty straight forward :dunno: no motor lifting... You need to look @ it again. Mine went in after a 700r4 to sm465 conversion. Why would you need to lift your motor :confused:. The biggest pain in the ass I had was putting my starter in before my dust shield :doah:.
 
The top end of the bellhousing bars bolt to a bracket sandwiched between the block and motor mount bell. Your pic only shows the lower end. Bww3588 doesn't have the brackets installed on the block end.
 
Look at the forward end of the bar in this pic, you can see a portion of the bracket.

Actually if you you follow the pic to the motor end of the brace you can see it (maybe your looking on a phone?). There is room on mine to run the bolt through towards the block and thread the nut. Not really sandwiched imo. My chevy is no different, just sayin...
 
You might want to look at what all that lot is going thru.

Bolt -> bar -> bracket -> nut

The bracket is between the motor mount bell and the block which is all resting on the motor mount. Lift is required to put his missing brackets in.
 
So apparently I didn't read enough. He took his brace mounts off and didn't put them back In? My 88 with original 208 and my 91 with original 241 both had the brace mounts, never removed them. If that's what he did, put them back, no reason not to other than saying phuck it.
 
Yeah in his first post it sounds like the bracket were left out during reassembly of his project.

I totally forgot about them. I took the engine out around 2 years ago to rebuild and change to a 4 speed from the auto. Well, I ran into money problems and had to put the project on the back burner for a while. Well, after 2 years, I had forgot about them as they were in a box in the garage, with the t case brace and not with the motor mounts like they should have been.

Yes, my mistake and now I'm dealing with it. But I really don't want to lift the engine if it will be ok for now. Here in the next few months, I'll be doing a ton swap with cross over steering so I'll be lifting the engine then to change the engine cross member for clearance. I can install them then.

Not saying screw it, or anything like that as I understand they were put there for a reason, but I don't want to lift the engine up and back down now if it will be ok until I do the 60 swap up front.
