How much $$ is in your trail rig?

I started with a $100 90K5 4 years ago. It was a very decent truck for $100 too. It just didn't run right and I was told it needed an engine. What it wound up being was the plug wires were bad and 2 of them were reversed on the cap. I had about $300 in it when it hit the trails for the first time.

I now have over $15,000 in it to do this. I would hate to even think about what it would cost if I had to pay labor charges too. All in all I have no real complaint and it keeps me out of trouble.:D

including the cost of the k5 itself, the total put into it is around $8500 all my own labor. ive also sold most of my old parts, probably about $1500-2000 worth.

We need to start two exclusive clubs...

#1 "The $15K $5K truck club" meaning a truck that cost $15k, but is only worth $5k.

#2 "The $20K $5K truck club" meaning a truck that cost $20k, but is only worth $5k.

Or we could just call them "my passion and the reason my wife thinks I am an idiot"

i was feeling like i'd spent too much on my old beast, but this thread makes me look less crazy.

$1200 to buy the 82 k5, in 2003. they wanted 1500. decent.
$80 mp3cd stereo head unit on clearance from fry's. used old speakers from my truck.
$35 for starter, after i filled the old one with mud. oops.
$10 for new power steering high pressure line.
$20 to rattlecan the interior after ripping up the old mat and insulation.
a few bucks' worth of wire that i already had.
$5 at junkyard for a few grille trim pieces and stuff.
$800 for remanned 350 (too rebuild it myself, unfortunately), new hoses, plugs, plug wires, fluids, etc. for the install.
$20 new fuel pump, filters, fuel line

$2170, let's say 2200, with a few bolts and stuff. i'm not including oil, gas (ouch), and other regular use stuff. well, i guess i haven't spent too much.

i plan to drop a buck or two in the near future, though.

$100 85 K5 inspected and running good
$100 poly body bushings
$50 swap meet brushgaurd
$300 manifolds back true duals
$? nuts and bolts
about $600

I totaled my woods truck once and stopped at $10,000.
I have probably put another $10K in it since then.

Worth every penny.

my wife disagrees, had it parked in the front yard one day and someone offered her $6000 for it. She would have taken it if I wasn't home.

Closing in on #2...which is exactly why these trucks almost never get sold in one piece. It's way easier to get more of your money out selling parts.

Even parting them we still lose usually. Rene, could you imagine the cost of our rigs if we paid somebody to build them for us? My guess is it would easily double the price.

hmmm, too much to not have some 1tons under it yet but id say 8-10g's :eek1:

Lets hope the Hollywood yuppie crowd don't start buying these and fixing them up. We will never be able to touch them I can see these selling for more each week on eBay. I am tracking 1989, 1988, 1987 and 1986 Blazers and all M1009s as well the prices are going up on these babies.

I think we have the best looking 4x4 trucks like ours (Ram Charger, Bronco, 4 Runner, Land Cruiser, Jeep).

  • 1K for K5
  • $350 for TH-350, rebuild including new converter, dipstick and adapter to replace bum 700R. used old tranny in trade.
  • $350 for motor including
  • $1000 on tires. on second set of Mud Kings.
  • $550 for American Racing 15x10 chrome steel rims. These rims and my first set of Mud Kings are on wife's truck so I could get 33's and her rally rims:D
  • FREE!! seats and center console out of my brother's K5 Jimmy. Now my parts truck.
  • $250 for steel to build rock sliders and front bumper, including welding wire and paint.
  • $600 for Q-jet! Came with a '75 Firebird:rolleyes:
  • ???? Odds and ends I,ll never remember.
  • Free headers and dual exhaust off parts truck.
  • $5000 aprox. over 5 years. Not to bad!

Too many stupid choices, I'd rather not know the total I've spent. I'm happy with the truck I have now, so I'm not going to complain.

If I was to start over today, I could build a good rig for a hell of a lot less. Live and learn has always been my motto!

About $8,000

It would be closer to $11k if not for MNorby & chevyman_400 helping me out so much :D:bow:

I got to thinking... can I count the ~$36,500 tow rig and the $3200 trailer I "HAD" to buy to get the trail rig to and from the trail head? :D

If I wrote all of it down, and my wife saw it, you could add the cost of two good divorice attorneys. Lets just say that it has not been cheap, is no where near the mythical "done" I see others talk about and has been worth every penny.

well, including the 2500 for the truck, with lift and tires already installed, i have as of April this year around 6gs, and i just stopped adding it up, but still keep the reciepts, one day i will sit down and finish
