I am about to go check out a 73 Blazer.

Sorry I am just gettin back around to posting. I found out I had to go back to the rig early (work on an offshore drilling rig). I only had five days off, when i found out I was heading back, I just hung out with the family. So I am now sitting 200 miles off the coast of LA for three weeks. :(

I never did find a good tailgate, I checked out a couple that were within an hour drive and they were totally rusted out. I am gonna look for one near I-10 so maybe I can pick it up on the way home.

I was able to do a little running around with the top off because the weather was so beautiful. It makes riding so much more fun. I love it.

Suburban or Blazer tailgate up to 88' should work. Correct me if I'm wrong.

yeah, I have been looking for anything 73-87. I don't know where these guys find all these parts Blazers and stuff, there is nothing around here.
I will find one eventually, I just have to be patient.

I am not sure Suburbans would work, I think they have barn doors don't they?

On another note, have any of ya'll ever rebuilt a NP205 transfer case? My rear seal is leaking pretty good. I would like to tune it up a bit, but I know zero about rebuilding trannies or transfer cases.
What is the going rate to have a transfer case rebuilt?

clean tailgates can be a rough item to find.. definitely one of the more "punished" panels on a truck usually..

and welcome to the show..... :D

Sorry to contradict some people here but I am fairly certain that the suburban tailgates are unique and will not work on a blazer. The suburban tailgates are taller and have a "curl up" on the top corners that flows into the top where the blazer is completly flat along the top edge. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Now, as others have indicated you can pull a tailgate off of any blazer from 1973 all the way through 1991. They are interchangeable between the years. There are small differences internally but as an entire part they will bolt up.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Rufus

On Edit:
LMC Truck indicates different part numbers for subs and blazers.
38-9681-t = 1973-1991 Blazer
38-9682-t = 1973-1991 Sub

Oh!, WELCOME to the fun! This site will save you so much $ by only having to do things once. On the other hand, it will cost you $$ because you want to do so much cool stuff for your rig. LOL

Yeah, I don't know for sure, but I think you are right. I did not correct that part, because I can guarantee that I would be correct in doing so.

Inside needs some TLC to say the least.

Rear tub looks to be in great shape. (That is the front driveshaft, the PO broke the U-joint.)

Not bad for $500 I think! :D

Looks like a great deal for $500 :D, as for the earlier tailgate disscusion, sub tailgates wil not fit a K5. A sub tailgate turns up at each end on the top (if that makes sense ) so they are a different animal then a K5 tailgate. IIRC as others stated 73-91 Blazers or Jimmys will interchange and if you are not concerned with a rear window you can also use a truck tailgate.
Welcome to the K5 addiction :wink1:

Topless for the first time!

Dropping the new (used) intake, carb, and HEI on the motor. Plenty of room under the hood of these things!

Nice suprise, the coveted 461 douple hump heads.

She runs really good! I can't wait to build a shop to start on the real stuff.

Very nice, the cancer gods have been nice to this one. The front bumper needs some tweeking I see, got that whole Billy Idol upper lip thing going!!!!!

I stand corrected on the tail gate. I guess thats what i get for going by memory instead of walking outside to check. Looks like you got a nice K5 to build on.

There is some rust. The drivers side floor has some. Also a little behind both rear wheel wells, and the battery ate up the battery tray, core support, and inner fender. The usual stuff.

But luckily those parts are the usual rust places that most all of these things suffer from, so parts are readily available. Also fenders and and bumpers are so cheap I am going to replace them instead of trying to repair them.

But it is looking like she is going to stay just like she is for a while until we can sell our house and get out from under the huge payment. Then its gonna be on!

Good deal for $500.00, But we need a thread on the Chevelle in the garage. Very Nice!!!

Ah, the chevelle. I have had it for almost 11 years. I bought it when I was 15.

Here is a short story on it.

I had always been into classic cars really bad. My dad worked offshore and was talking to a buddy of his he worked with from Miss, and was talking about how i was fixing to be old enough to drive and was looking for an old car. His friend said that he knew his neighbor had an old chevy that had been parked in a garage and covered up for about the last 15 years. My dad told him to ask him about it and what he would take for it and we would come look at it. Well, we drove the 6 hours from AL to Yazoo City MS and when we pulled in the drive of this guys house we found that the "old chevy" was an immaculate 67 Chevelle Malibu. The day before we came to look at it, he rebuilt the carb, changed the gas, and took off the old Firestone Wide Ovals and put on some fresh tires. The car was all original and the only blemish on the whole thing was an almost invisible ding on the trunk lid where some kid hit it with a rock years ago. It took all of five seconds to figure out I wanted it. I paid $5,000 for it. We drove it 6 hours home and it did great. Two days after I bought it, we had it appraised for insurance purposes, and the guy said it was worth a minimum of $15,000! It is a two door hardtop with a 283, and powerglide. I wish it was an SS, but oh well. I put on a small four barrell, and HEI ignition, and drove it all through high school, and through college which included a 100 mile a day commute.

When I was 19, just out of college, an old, drunk man towing a tractor pulled out RIGHT in front of me. All I had time to do was snatch the well and drive off into about a 40 foot gully. Luckily the smaller treetops slowed me down from hitting to hard. When it was over I awoke in the floorboard with nothing but skinned knees from the metal dash and a sore chest. The guy had no insurance, all i had was liability. Then, he died shortly there after. So basically I was screwed. The car escaped pretty good. The only damage being a tweaked front bumper, passenger front fender and door dented. But, the frame right behind the front crossmember was bent up about an inch from when the car landed on its nose. That was it. After the tow truck pulled me outta the hole, I drove it to my house (parents house) and parked it. It sat there for five years, as I was broke, then moved off, got married, etc. Well finally, after years of guilt. I went back home and got it. It is currently under my garage awaiting a full restoration, whenever I sell my house and I build a shop at our new place. I will be using my Blazer to practice my skills before I get to my beloved Chevelle.

During my years of riding it during high school, I was offered some pretty big money for it, that most people might have jumped on. But I will never sell it. I will see if I have any pics on my laptop and post a couple.
