I got the tires.*HMMWV wheel question post 96*

Welding them in is the easy part! cutting the centers is the difficult part to get perfect.

I figure use the outer ring as a guide for the trusty plasma cutter, then clean it up with a 4.5" grinder with a flapper wheel, any other way to do it?

But, I'll ask the question again, if I did recenter, I would personally go with the pressed centers. How would I go about doing them myself? Cut out the old centers, drop in the new centers from the back side, measure a million times to make sure they are even, and stitch weld them in?

Basically that's it. I think I've read the pressed centers are a pretty tight fit so I don't think they move around a lot. You could mount the mocked up wheel with the unwelded centers on your axle, get a dial indicator and check it for run out while slowly turning / "adjusting" it. Once you're happy with how true it is tack it in place.

Do you know how I know you've never bought big tires? :D

just messin with ya :thumb:

Haha I never have. You got me. But I have bought used tires, and I am afraid of any used tires that have seen abuse or serious use. It would suck to drive that long to find 3 plugs and a torn sidewall. I once drove a half hour to look at tires that were like new and were so abnormally worn they couldn't be rolled straight by hand. I was pissed then.

Yea, I'll be pissed, especially since I've asked the guy multiple times if there are any cuts in the side walls, lugs missing, plug or patches, or abnormal wear. He has said multiple times that he doesn't think so, but when he gets a chance he'll go and confirm that nothing that I have asked is wrong. If there are I'll pass, and if I get there and find out there are I'll walk.

That's kinda sketchy. I know every flat I get. I don't have to go look to confirm that yes indeed my tire was once flat.

And the cheapest I can find the centers are for $50 and that's from C&M Performance. So if I can get adapters/spacers for $200 or less that's the route I'll go...

The guy says he bought them used with the intention of getting 16.5" wheels and never got the wheels. So he says he has never had them mounted.

same as the spacers, but much better outcome with the centers. The spacers just add another part to the equation and put more stress/force on your wheel bearings.

nvrenuf's idea sounds like it would work well.

Ive recentered a couple sets of h1s using c&ms pressed centers. Yes it is a bit more work but the price is about the same as spacers and the outcome is better. It will also increase the value of your h1s if you decide to sell them later on.

Follow nvrenuf's advice and you should do fine. Both sets that I did using the same method have been ran on the highway at 60+ mph with no noticeable issues.

This is what you want! Grooved accordingly to your wants.

If you plan on deep snow wheeling, steer away from boggers. haha I traded a guy for some Iroks to get my 44" Boggers, and ill never give em up

Could get the boggers groove and/or sipped?

I have friends that have done it, they hate them, they have no lateral traction. LTBs and SXs are good, Iroks are the kings of the snow though

Grooving could help with the lateral traction pending on how the grooves are done I would assume... Isnt there a bogger that comes pre grooved?

I've read reviews that iroks are excellent tires except that they wear down fast from being a soft rubber compound and get gouges in the tread fairly easy.

Yeah, all depends how you wanna use them and what size your looking for. You may be able to buy some pre-grooved from a middle man, but super swamper isnt even producing anything above 35" tires at this point.
