I HATE AUTOMATICS!!!

[ QUOTE ]
Why spend $500-1000 on rebuilding a tranny that will fail in 200k miles or less when you can find a tranny for $150-200 that will last longer than your truck?

[/ QUOTE ] Because you don't have to shift, it's faster, and can handle more power without having to remove the whole transmission to upgrade a clutch. 200K is a LONG time.

It's just a matter of personall preferance really. I like autos myself and rather spend the extra cash to have a strong, reliable auto. But I have never had to deal with a bad rebuilder before, my local guy is great, and would probably be pretty disgusted if I kept blowing an auto because of a bad rebuilder or just a plain stroke of bad luck for that matter. I also think an engine lasts longer and has an easier life in front of an auto than a manual.

Sounds more like the guy building them has no idea what he is doing to me.

[/ QUOTE ] +3 or 4 what ever we're up to. my first th400 lasted 100k, it sholdnt have died so soon but we did a [censored] load of towing and it wasnt maintained properly, the one in my sub now has 61k on it and no problems at all.

As long as the automatic transmission is built propperly, and you have a good cooler on it, it should last. The 78 C30 crew cab duelie had a 454 with a TH400 and we pulled a trailer with it almost everyday for 3 years.

This one has a huge B&M stacked plate cooler.

What I think you really need is a 4L80E. You cannot destroy that tranny. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Interesting that you say that. I have a part time job, and my boss builds automatic trannies. He is convinced the 4L80E is weaker than the 700R4. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

I really don't think it was anything this guy did, I think the pump is chewed up from the flexplate that cracked. When it worked, it worked fine...and for thousands of miles with various heavy trailers in tow.

The problem with this entire deal is that this truck has a fixed yoke rear tranny output. From what I understand the only 2wd TH 400s with fixed yoke outputs are C30s with two piece driveshafts and Corvettes....so finding just any old TH 400 to replace this one is out of the question. The broken hard parts would all have to be replaced and put inside this case to have a sucessful repair.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yah, some pickups have a fixed yoke output also.
So you chewed up a few internals, why couldn't you swap the tailshaft into another th400?

How is a 4l80 weaker than a 700r4? A while ago i learned in a tranny class a 700r4 is a 4l60 prior to the electronic valve body.. the 60 rating is a torque handling rating on a scale of 1-10.. 700's being a 6.. a 4l80 is an 8. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

he's an idiot. the difference in the beef of the parts alone is huge. no way in hell a 4L80E is weaker than a 700R4.

I really hope this isnt the same guy who rebuilt your tranny. Although if he is, it would explain a lot. /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif

No, it is not.

He referenced a number of the splined parts inside (shafts, etc).

My boss loves the 700R4, he just thinks it's oh-so-wonderful. He hates the 4L80E.

Me personally, I hate all of them. They're not dependable.
