so I`m popping my diff cover off to drain the fluid, and put a new cover on it (PO put a freakin plastic cover on there). So while I`m blasting it off, 5 of the bolts break off in the diff, and the ones that did come off looked to fragged on the end of the threads...

Any ideas?

I'm really good at drilling broken bolts, i have drilled literally thousands of broken bolts at work over the years. Just let me know when to arrive at the airport. Of course you'll be paying for my round trip flight but my services are free once i get there. :haha:

Tell ya what, I`ll have Greg put you up, then I`ll drive up to Keene and pick you up:p:

I`ve tried to drill out a bolt once in my front yoke and failed miserably...guess I`ll give my buddy a call.....

in that case, easy solution: trash it for a 14bff:p::D

you should be able to drill them out fairly easily, ive gotten good at it as well, drilled out several yokes and other similar things. the housing is stationary so it makes it easier for you do versus trying to keep it from spinning and drilling at the same time. just remember to oil the bit or you'll kill it in no time

what about the other holes, which from the looks of the bolts, may be a little nasty. Just re tap them?

Dug around the shed a bit, and found a baggy with bolts label diff. The threads appear to be a little finer (closer together) then the ones I took out. They only thread a bout 1/8th inch into any of the holes that dont have a broken bolt in there. Possible the PO used the wrong bolts? Maybe impacted them on?

I`ve yet to try anything yet..I`ll admit that I`m pretty nervous to even mess with it...

All diff cover bolts i've seen are course thread. I'm not sure about the 14sf but i'm guessing the bolts are 3/8" and should be course which is 16TPI.

Screw extractors tend to break easy in my experience. I've had very good success with the tapered extractors though.

Alright, I took one of the bolts that came off the cover and cut it down to where there was about 1/4" threads intact, and took that and a bolt from the baggy (that came from the junk 14bsf that was sitting under the frame when I bought the red truck) and found that the ones that were in the diff were 5/16th 18tpi, and the ones in the baggy were m8x1.25.

Since the ones I had came out of the other axle intact, I`ll assume thats the size.

I bought a tapered extractor while I was at the parts store too.

So when and if I get the broken bolts out, should I just drill all the holes out and retap them? What size?

Heli coils a possibillity?

The diff cover bolts will not be metric. If you use studs then you have the chance of bashing the threads on rocks and what not and damaging the threads.

Strange. The only hole on the chart at the parts store that the bolt would thread into was m8x1.25.:confused:

Regardless, the holes obviously need to be rethreaded. I think 3/8ths is too big, may not even fit in the hole in my new cover. If they do, is that the size I should used, or tapp for 5/16ths?

You need someone here who either has a 14sf or has knowledge of them to tell you what the proper diameter bolt is for the cover. My buddy has one and a while back he had it rebuilt and i thought the bolts were 3/8"-16

Just did a little research. According to Dorians' 14BSF tech thread, the housing cover bolts are same thread as 10/12bs, just different length.
