I`m in a wee bit of a ****uation

I got here too late... nice repair.
I think a good set of EZ-Outs is a must have item for anyone that wrenches... I've pulled out hundreds of bolts at work using the same set...

A few people mentioned the weld-a-nut-on method which I too have done (mostly on the ROOTS Blowers we repair) and it works but 99% of the time I just use the correct size EZ-Out....

same thing happened to me a while back, maybe its heat related

In general any thing newer than 1980 could be metric. In a push to go metric, GM Started to convert body bolts to metric, first on cars then on trucks. Engine and accessory ( alt, starter, AC, PS ) would stay american, fenders, body bolts, etc would go metric. If a "new" transmisson was used it probably was metric. That is why some diff covers were 5/16 and others were 8mm.

I've heard 14SF sometimes called "metric 14bolt"

I can't speak for the earlier 8lug 14SF but the later models are all metric (IIRC 89+).

I got a diff cover from Blue Torch Fab for my 14SF and it came with SAE Bolts. Had to go to Fastenal to buy metric bolts. My SF is a 6 lug out of a 94 2wd.

Good luck
