I was just driving home and I heard a pop and sounded like some rocks in a coffee can. there are some vibrations when i went up the hill of the driveway. Im not sure what happened. but now it makes noise and has a vibration when driving up hill.

U Joint lost a cap? Check and see if your rear driveshaft is loose.

all u joints and caps accounted for.... i could turn the rear and the front shaft with my hand about a 1/10 of a turn. I dont think i could do that before.

How far did you drive after you heard the pop? And does it sound like rocks in a coffee can at all times? I'm assuming you're driving a 4x4 Blazer/Jimmy, btw.

about 2.7 miles at less than 45 mph. no the noise started right after the pop, at first i thought i ran over some loose pea gravel or some thing. yup its a 79 k5 blazer.

Damn man, I wish I could help. Not to worry though, someone will recognize the symptoms and pipe up.

Actually, come to think of it, I had a wheel bearing break open on me while driving. (it was on my GTO) I could lift the wheel/axle up inside the axle tube and it made a hell of a noise when driving.

I don't suppose you have hubcaps on do you? I'm thinking lugnuts.

But then, I always think lugnuts.........lugnuts lugnuts lugnuts..

Sorry, I have these spells......

But seriously, do you have anyone you can call? You need someone to either drive it or stand along side while you do so you can isolate where that sound is coming from.

If you can give us a clue as to where, maybe someone here can say what.

right now your shafts are tight, I am assuming your in park. Lift the rear of the truck up where both tires are off the ground. put your shifter in nuetral , then spin your rear driveshaft and see if you get any looseness.

BLOCK THE FRONT WHEELS FIRST. IN FRONT OF THEM AND IN BACK OF THEM !! PLEASE.

After you check your driveshaft for movement, you should raise the front of the truck and check your wheel bearings.
If it sounds like a metal garbage can rolling down a bumpy street, those would be symptoms of wheel bearings.

Please make sure when you do this that you block both front tires from the front and back. We don't want the truck rolling onto you!

alright, I'm gonna leave it at home, work today and try to get off early so i can check it. i have a feeling its a wheel bearing. or atleast hoping it is.

when im looking for driveshaft movement am i looking for turning motion or left right or up down movement?

I chock or jackstand before climbing under a truck, dont really trust floor jack or park on a 30 year old truck. ;]

could it be my front chunk? it sounds like a sledgehammer pounding on the front end. only if you are going up a hill. driving on level spots you can hear it and feel it but its not as bad. when you go down the street you can hear it like thump thump thump.... but going up the hill its bang bang bang you can feel both on the tcase stick and under your feet in thefloorboard.
I replaced the driversside bearings they looked bad.

Well, at this point, it could still be almost anything. Do you have front hubs? If you unlock them and take it out of 4wd, then that should eliminate the front chunk.

But something as loud and serious as it sounds, should be visible unless it is in a diff.

I'm guessing that it is real rhythmic. If it sounds like its coming from the front, take another hard look at the front drive shaft. Make sure it is not hitting something when the truck is going up a hill.
Otherwise, its starting to sound like you may have lost a tooth or two off a ring or pinion gear.
If so, the truck will usually seem to jerk slightly when the noise happens.

Again, try to get someone to stand alongside as you drive slowly by to see if they can tell where it is coming from.

Yeah, J, the the truck shudders when it happens. it has fulltime 4by no manuel lockouts. on the road it makes the noise and shudders but its less noticeable til you go up a hill. going up a hill its so loud. im pulling off the diff cover tomorrow. keep ya'll posted. thanks for all the help

I was afraid of both of those. I was hoping that you had a part-time kit in so we could isolate the front end, and I was also afraid that it was jerking.
Sure sounds like you have lost a tooth or two in the front chunk.

Ask around here for folks who know more about this vehicle than me, but you might be able to drive it for a while with the front driveshaft removed and the transfer case in high lock.
If you need it for a daily driver.
I have seen it done for a short time to get a truck home, and I don't see where it would hurt, but there are people here who can tell you for sure.

Of course, that depends on the condition of the front gears. If a tooth is cracked, then the ring and pinon are already pretty much toast, but you don't want to damage the other parts. A single missing tooth might not hurt to run under no load, but several could cause grenading.

In that case, before you open the pumpkin up, raise one front tire off the ground and rotate it. The symptoms you are describing are exactly what I felt when I lost the slip yoke in my front driveline. Granted, mine is a 205 so I could just remove it, but I could feel the problem even without my hubs locked in. I had orginally thought I had a ring gear problem, so I raised one wheel and was turning the wheel when I noticed that the driveline was turning at the slip joint while the remainder stayed put.
