idle issue on an 88 k5

I price checked an EGR at oreillys and i think they quoted me $70 or $65 and i was shocked because i thought they were only like $40 lol

Stay away from the auto zone, oreily etc EGR valves. Learned over the years that TBI needs Delco EGR to run right. My current '89 ran like crap until I put a Delco one on. I tried Standard and OEM brand, trying to save money.
Both suck and didn't fix it. Put Delco on and ran like a new truck.
Rockauto.com has them at almost the same cost as the auto parts store version. Dealership will rob ya blind for one.

Ok so found an ac delco EGR at a local shop at a reasonable price... My other question is should i replace the EGR solenoid at the same time?

If you can wait til later this evening I can scan in and post up the procedures for testing both the EGR valve and the EGR solenoid. TBI EGR's work differently than a carbed version and can't be directly tested using a vacuum pump with the EGR valve off the truck (or even on the truck for that matter until the engine is running).

It rained all day here so i didnt touch it lol i probably wont get to it until early next week with my work schedule the way it is so those instructions would be greatly appreciated

Ok, here is the test procedure for you. Hopefully this will also help others in the future.

4x4high got the chart up first. My laptop top died today, so I am glad someone else had the procedure to post up.

Big thank you for postin that stuff im gonna do those tests first thing next week since i work 12 hr shifts on friday and sunday...

Another question i have is since ive got that exhaust leak and headers are reasonably priced and come with all gaskets and hardware how difficult are they to install?

Depends if the studs break off in them like mine did on three of them!!! What a bitch that was to get them out!!!

Spray plenty of PB Break or something like it on the bolts before you get ready to pull them out an run the engine just before to warm up the threads an loosen them a bit.

You have all that smog crap also to get rid of don't you?! I hate that smog junk!

I was gonna try and get a set of headers that habe the ports for the EGR tubes and are stock length so that i dont need a new Y pipe... My question was how difficult is that passenger side manifold to get to and take off because it looks like theres a bunch of crap around it lol

ok so life got hectic for the last like month and i blew a rear tire so i had to fork out the cash monies to just go ahead and replace both rears with some spiffy new falken wildpeak ats which are amazing if anybody was wondering...

the exhaust leak got to a point where it had to be dealt with and turned out to be one of the donuts was worn down to bare asbestos lol

now that things have calmed down its time to address that pesky idle misfire again...

now the miss at idle comes and goes based on atmospheric temperature and seems to become more apparent when the motor warms up...

also found out that the thermostat is like a 160 degree thermostat...

now my two questions are...

1. is that low of a temp thermostat gonna be an issue during a southern california winter?

2. my buddy has a brand new egr block off plate sittin in his garage that he never used and offered it to me free.
i have a connect for smog so thats not an issue but im wondering what happens with the egr solenoid and the signal its sending to the ecu when i put that block off plate on?

thanks again for all your help everybody :D

KEEP the EGR as it helps to reduce the chances of detonation (unless you like rebuilding engines because the pistons have holes in them). Also the EGR block off plate for an earlier style engine won't work on the TBI stuff (different bolt spacing) if that's what your buddy has to offer you that is.

I should just suck it up and replace the egr and the egr solenoid then huh?

Any idea what the general timing specs are on a 1 over stock torque cam?
Ive heard its tdc on a tbi motor because the "computer" will take over and adjust on its own bit that seems odd to me =\
