if it aint broke dont fix it!! but....axle shaft u joint Q

Put the trans in neutral and set the e-brake and/or chock the tires. Grab the driveshaft and look for up/down or side/side play. Any movement is reason to replace them.

The "best" way would be to pull them back out and see what the bearings and bearing surfaces look like but it's not practical. Often times worn u-joints will vibrate or click when they begin to fail.

But what about the axle shafts u joints, for a 10 bolt.

I feel stupod asking theese ordinary questions lol

Oops, you did say axle shaft joints :doah:

If you can hear them in 4WD you know they're really bad.

Otherwise, put the truck in 4WD and jack up one front tire and spin the tire back and forth a little bit and watch for any play in the joint (the tire won't really spin much either way).

Thanks..

I got a damn vibration that im trying to get to.

Thanks again!!!!

We need to know more about the truck, vibrations can come from lots of places.

The truck in your avatar picture looks too new for a full time t-case (NP203) or full time hubs so if the vibration is happening in 2WD its not anything in the front end.

Any chance this vibration is related to your post about the new gears in the rear end?

fyi i have had front end wheel joints bad but no play.

thay will bind up on 1 side of the joint and cause binding in the steering and funny vibes.

sometimes the test involves removing the steering parts from the axle knuckles and jack up the side and turn the wheel all the way to lock. then lock in the hub and try and turn the tire. if it stops and binds up bad then bingo bad wheel joint.

Its a 208 tc

My front d-shaft had play in it at the splined end so i took it off tested the truck and the vibes were minimall but i can still feel them, i got good senses!!! so i said to myself the front d-shaft is involved!!! the vibes are not continuos it starts around 3rd gear at 2700 RPMS wich would be around 45+MPH and dont know how i can put it put but it starts at that speed or i feel it at that speed and stops and starts and stops in a matter of 1 second in between, i hope getting the rear pinion fixed it will go away, my trucks drives to good to let this spoil the joy of driving it

I wouldn't think that the front shaft of an NP208 would be turning in two wheel drive. You are talking about two wheel drive right?

YEah, might of missed on that one something is going on, what can the hubs cause if they are bad?? i already have the warns and if i leave the locked i do feel the truck weird cant remember how but i do remember i stopped and unlocked them.

Your hubs being locked won't cause the front driveshaft to turn, only the front axle shafts. Make sure the transfer case lever is in 2WD HI. If the front driveshaft is still turning, you have a problem with your shift linkage or something. I guess an axleshaft U-joint could cause some vibration if the hubs were locked. You have manual hubs, right?

With the hubs locked in your drive shaft will turn because your axle shafts will turn the spiders and then turn everything else.

OK theres a lot of stuff to go through damn..

In 2H hubs locked (manual) the driving felt odd, i had to stop and unlock the hubs and it felt diferent dont know how or why but thats another case. right now im dealing with an intermitent vibe thats annoyind the hell out of me. i have a bad rear yoke, its loose just a bit i hope i fix that and get it over with im eagger to go on the trails again before the hot weather comes in.

Mine feels different too when I drive with the hubs locked in 2wd. I guess you're just feeling the front shafts turning or something. Maybe that yoke being loose is causing your problem.

If you got a loose yoke you are more than liking going to have to have the crush sleeve replaced to tighten it up because more than likely it ain't going to tighten up.

Since you're only feeling the bad vibes at certain rpm, I wonder if it's not your rear shaft. Does it have any dents in it? Any wieghts knocked off? How about the splines on the slip shaft? You may have a bad crush sleeve, but if that's the case, I wonder what else is bad, the pinion bearing? I would get a socket and try to tighten the nut up. I think it's a 1 1/4".

If the yoke is loose enough it would cause a vibe in the rear and cause problems in the rear end too.
