If you ever wonderd "How many airsoft pellets does it take.........."

I meant it would be easier to recover the pellets over Equal :D . Yes golf balls would be easier to recover but I feel the dispersion of the pellets will balance better than the golf balls. Really this whole thing comes down to personal preference. I put the data here incase anyone else was curious as to how many pellets they needed to purchase. It has def. taken an interesting turn

Same thing happened to the last thread i followed on tyre balancing with golf balls but it went the other way round as the pellets etc came into play.
I'm fascinated by the golf ball concept and people who use them seem to swear by them.

In this thread there is alot of talk about equal, i wouldnt use it in a 4x4. it will clump on ya. Also metal bb's will too, they'll rust and stick together. best thing to use is airsoft or actual beads designed for balancing.

I was the one who used the airsoft pellets. I play airsoft alot, look at my avitar. I used the .25g bbs. It is what we play with ( better accuracy) I hated it. I did use enough, actually I weighed out the exact ammount reccomended by the online calculator and added 10percent. If it works for some of you...great. I just wouldnt do it again.

Looks like we shoot through the same weapon, but I bet yours is way more modd'ed than mine. What do you shoot with? (FPS too)

And back on topic, would you based on your experience use golf balls vrs. airsoft pellets?

ics m4 ris custom internals(I machined my lower mechbox to accept 7mm bearings instead of bushings, the upper is polished to a mirror shine on the inner bore and the piston has been reworked so that it meshes with the sector gears better. it is mostly systema stuff accept for the piston itself it is a deepfire titanium), promethius ti tightbore barrel, peq2 battery box, readymag battery box, custom dual battery setup, depending on what upper mechbox I use I can go anywhere from about 250 to over 550, typically as it sits right now it will crono about 398, also there is a m203 on the bottom that fires the deepfire 180 rounds

as to using either to balance a tire i would not.... some of the guys are running larger than 35s and have beadlocks. this might be the best choice for them. if you decide you want to take them out the airsoft pellets are a pain in the ass, the golf balls would be easier to put in and remove but i dont know if they would desperse as well.

I have a feeling you did not use enough, each tire is gonna be different and some tires require WAY more than they "should", if you used a generic calculator to figure the weight than thats likely your problem. There is no reason for the bb's not to work if enough are used.

eh, we mounted 4 38" SSRs today. Each called for 14-16 oz(well 3 did, one was like 6  ). We didn't have nearly taht much in the way of stick on weights. Heck we didn't have enough to do one tire let alone all 4. Equal or some other in tire would have been best, but everyone(except the teacher who knew the stuff works) thought I was joking or crazy, and we didn't have the time. I need to get some tires for the S10 soon, mount them on the Hummer rims, throw some golf balls in and actually balance them like that, show people it works.

my 86 was balanced with with golf balls on 36 inch tsl's

really smooth ride:D

I don't suppose tennis balls would work as well huh? Scratch Basketballs and rugby as well. Perhaps Baseballs???

So the golf balls auto balance everything constantly. What about times you hit a bump on the freeway or offroad? Any wierd noises :)?

Yes, they do make some noise, especially when you first take off.
I am going to put a couple of pounds of BBs in each of my Rockers.

I use regular BB's in the 265/75 tires on my DD/towrig.....about 4 oz. each tire. They are Trxus MT's and I just couldn't get enough rim weights to fit on them to really balance them well even after a couple of tries. I eventually put the BB's in them and it really helped.

As already mentioned you should need a lot less total weight when using BB's as you would with regular rim weights. The reason is that the BB's (or golf balls, etc....) put the balance weight right at the inner tread surface where it's needed while the locatio of rim weights is a compromise and has to deal with the distance between the rim and the ground.

For balancing big off-road tires...........yeah, good luck! My 38x13 TSL's on 16x10 steel rims required rim weights along probably 1/4 of the outer lip on both sides PLUS a bunch of stick on weights to even get close to balancing out. After about two trailrides half the weights were missing from getting knocked off by rocks and ruts, the tires had spun a small amount on the rim, and the lug chunking makes the previous balancing useless anyway.

i have never heard of this kind of balancing. its 100% new to me and its pretty interesting... It almost seems too good to be true.

ive always had problems balancing my BFG A/T's... I might try this new trick..

what about using clean, dry desert (or beach) sand?

I said that I wouldnt do the airsoft pellet thing again, but since then my rig has evolved to the point where it was really the only way. I am running 42inch Iroks with recentered hummer double beadlocks and I put about a pound in each tire. It helped greatly.

why is everyone talking about equal and bb's these days? it costs next to nothing to have each tire balanced at a shop anyway lol
I have called all the big 4x4 shops in the portland area as well as the semi truck shops. No problem for them to handle my 39" tall tires, its the 18" wide no-one can balance. So i have no choice except for this concept. I'd never heard of it until the last few weeks but it sure seems like it's not a new idea and it has been well experimented with. The local shop here says they will balance all 4 of mine for $65, so for me that a steal considering my other options of nothing.

I balanced all 5 of mine for $30 and there is enough in there for 42s so when I get new tires I put the airsoft pellets in the new tires and go no need to buy more or anything.

Heres a couple of things. If you do put your tires on a balancer with the bbs or whatever they really don't appear to balance out. This is with only two different sets of tires.

Now heres my question to fuel the debate. How big is the area of imbalance? Wouldn't it make more sense to use something heavier to concentrate on a smaller area(this of course is assuming the area of imbalance is in fact small)? This is the only argument I would have against using airsofts. 2000 airsofts take up alot more area than 200 bbs.

In my expirence the bbs do not rust. I have helped put them in 5 or 6 different trucks. 4 of these have had to get new tires due to sidewall cuts. The bbs came out bright and shiny. So we dismounted a couple of the tires on another truck to inspect the inside of the tire and the bbs. Once again bright and shiny and no aparent damage to the tire. All of these tires had some moisture in them

i remember reading a post about using golf balls and it said it was a bad thing to do

it showed pics of some that were in a tire and they were tore up not round anymore and it said somthing about a tire manufacture being the one that did the test i'm not arguing if they work or not i just thought i read that info on here a couple months ago
