IH scout 800

Nekkid bacon dispenser has my ..................

Oh wait that's another tread. Tranny for me is 50/50 but for this I might say auto.

Project has slowed way down, been busy with work and trying to figure out how to mount some dang seats. May have to begin a cage so I can have something to mount my seats to.

anyway, used the scout as a yard tractor to move some junk around

Cut out some of the hood supports so my hood would shut all the way

then I took off that rusty old half top, planning on a cage with a soft top

removed rear seat divider

and got some rear shock mounts added

I also pulled the oil pan and pump. shimmed the pump and cleaned the pickup screen. helped oil pressure a little, it never drops completely to 0 now so maybe this engine will last me a for a few wheelin trips. All I really need to do before going on a ride is mount some seats and mount the propane tanks so that everything is safely secured. Oh and I still need to get a title for it but I have insurance on it and I have a few local trails that I don't have to get on a public road to access.

I also found a deal on a gm small block to t90 adapter so I could use a gm engine without swapping the rest of my drivetrain. Haven't decided if I want it yet or not. and I know that t90s aren't the greatest but I have 3 of them and nobody wants them so I would like to use them till I can afford something better.

Turns out my brother in law also has a half ton Ih pickup in his junkyard with a 304 and all the power steering stuff so I may see if I can pick it up cheap and keep the IH engine. Just don't know at this point.

Decided that I don't need to use my credit card to build a cage when I don't have a title yet so I cant really drive it much and I can save up the money to build one in a couple months so in the mean time my boss gave me some small tubing today so I decided to build some seat mounts.

Here is the frame I built

Its made out of 1" diameter thin wall tubing which isn't great but should be plenty strong for easy riding. I used 2x3 angle on each end that bolts to the floor in 4 places on each side and then through the rocker in 2 places. Then there is a piece of 1.5x1.5 angle the bolts to the tranny hump and has a brace on each side to keep the middle from sagging.

The seats I have are from an 80s model Camaro that I got for free.

Still need to add seat belts and weld on some tabs for the passenger seat to mount but I was able to take the scout for a 30 minute drive down some dirt roads today. Getting anxious about taking it for a trail ride.

The neat thing about this seat frame is that in a few months when I am able to build a cage and attach seats to the cage I can pull this frame out and use it the other scout that I will be restoring:thumb:

Hopefully I will be able to bring home a couple of my other scouts and get some pics of them on here this weekend.

Oh and by the way, that is not my house that the scout is parked in front of. That is my tool shed that was for some reason built to look like a house. Its an odd building but had lots of shelves for storage space, but it looks like a tiny green house:dunno:

I wish I had pictures of the "half a Scout" my buddy scored for free. Some guy had it but was getting divorced so basically told him to come get it. Michigan had ate it LONG ago. The body rusted in two, the back half disappeared, but the frame was still there and it still ran. Albeit was completely unsafe to drive. Still, had a complete power and drive train and some other bits and pieces he needed.

One of the my scouts, the one with the best running drivetrain ironically, is in similar condition. It has sat in one spot for so long that the body rusted completely off of it and is laying next to it on the ground. All that's left attached is the firewall and about half the floor. But you can hook it to a battery and give it fuel and it will run. Im going to use the best body I have with it's drivetrain for a restoration for my wife to drive.

Haha. Actually my buddies used to joke it was for their wives to drive.

Haha. Actually my buddies used to joke it was for their wives to drive.

My wife gets cool stuff to drive. A restored Myers Towd. A golf cart with GSX-R600 and 4wheel ind. suspension. She had a 1971 Miller 18.5' drag boat. At least that's what I told her.

All jokes aside, the restored scout really is for my wife. It was suppose to be her first vehicle but her brother never fixed it, nor did he ever give it to her. The stipulation for me bringing home more junk was that she got one of them. Plus Im more likely to make it look nice and be mechanically sound if its for someone else. Im kind of fond of junk and if its safe to drive down the road and somewhat reliable, I usually don't take it much farther.

Probably be tomorrow before I can get pics up, too tired and lazy right now but with the help of a good friend of mine we got my other 3 scouts home so I can be super busy trying to work on them all at once.:doah:

Was going to have to use a trailer and come along but my friend didn't like that idea so he drove over in his roll back with winch and we got them all drug home in a couple hours.

Gave one set of the whimpy stock scout axles to him for a straight axle side by side for a little compensation. And before anyone asks, he was given a free side by side frame with no suspension/drivetrain so he plans to use a front wheel drive engine/transaxle setup with the scout axles and put it back together. Should be interesting anyways.

Found some doors for my scout and put them on just to see what it would look like.

Don't know that I care much for it. They are heavy but may be nice to have when winter gets here.

And here is the rest of my scouts and parts

First is the scout 80, not sure what year, the vin number come back as a 1970 Cadillac but its on an IH vin plate with all the scout specs:dunno:. Body is mostly crap, no drivetrain, but a few good parts like steering, bumper and a couple body pieces

Next is a 66 scout 800. Most of the body has rusted off but I was able to dig most of the body panels out of the woods and a few pieces of them will be useful. But it had a good 4 cyl with 3 speed and axles. This one was suppose to be my wife's first vehicle. Now 15 years later there isn't much left but hopefully we can piece one together.

Last but not least is another 66 scout 800. This one is body, frame and springs but it has the nicest body and the least about of rust of any of them. It will take some time and a little cutting and welding but the body shouldn't be too difficult to fix.

It has a perfect grill, one bedside is perfect, perfect hood, and one perfect fender. I have two good doors out of the bunch and one good half top and one good full top. Out of what is left Ill have to patch two places in the floor, one rear corner and part of the bedside and one of the front fenders.

Already pulled the front clip off the blue scout as it has the good fender I need
Photo0978.jpg

Right now the main priority is to get the good parts off of the scouts I wont be using and scrap the rest to get it out of the yard. Then Ill have to build some kind of shed to house the project so its out of the weather.

yeah, tree fell on blue scout. Ruined a good top. And don't worry, I wont throw away anything that I think will be useable. Mostly just the rusted out body pieces.

Keeping frames, any drivetrain parts and interior pieces, like heater parts, dash parts, windshield frames etc. Nothing that can be used will be scrapped.:thumb:

Just a small update, decided to test the reliability of my scout today before I get it out in the middle of the woods. Drove it to work, which is only about 10 miles, but enough to make sure its gonna make it down the road and back. Most of the people I work with drive fancy new cars, my rusted out beat up old scout was the talk of the center today and nobody parked next to me:haha:

Now its time to get it prepped for a trail ride. Maybe tomorrow night Ill go for a short one.

And on a side not my father in law found me a 40lb propane tank today for $30:woot: Right now Im running on bbq grill tanks but Ive been wanting to mount a 30 or 40lb tank and carry a bbq grill tank for a spare.
