I\'m buying a D60 today - what do I look for?

Ok I'm going to check out a D60 I found on a local board today. Its a 1986, is this a good year? I know that there were some years better than others.

So other than pulling the cover and checking the gears for missing or chipped teeth what else should I check it for? Thnx guys

if it is a dodge axle, it will have external hubs. see if you can get the spring plates with it.

Depending on what year it is has a factor in that. The 90-93 Dodge version's have internal hubs like the GM 60's have.

What about the miltary CUCV type axles...are these neck up style or does it also vary by the year??

Re: I\'m buying a D60 today - what do I look for?

Actually either 79 or 80 were the last years for the neck down axles.

Plan to replace the king pin springs and bushings if they have never been done. If 4wd was not used much there might be a little surface rust in the pumpkin but it's nothing to worry about.

I forgot to mention that it is a GM D60 /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Just thought I'd ask and since you (Wayne) a replying to this you would know best cause the D60/14B I have came from "TheGeneral's" truck and he got them from you. I for sure have to do the kingpins...she shakes like a MOFO and one of the seals is leaking out the driver side. That all gets done when I do the detroit in November /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Re: I\'m buying a D60 today - what do I look for?

what about spring plates? I know that the only thing he says is wrong with the axle is the driver side spring pad has been cut off. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Didn't think that was anything major though.

Re: I\'m buying a D60 today - what do I look for?

Don't worry about the driver's side, that's the easy one to get (you could even use a rear spring plate from a 14 ff equipped truck to replace that).

It's the passenger side on that takes the bolts/studs that you need.

Re: I\'m buying a D60 today - what do I look for?

how much are they asking for it? I have one from an 85 with locking hubs- 4.11 ratio for 850.00 it is a SRW type and not the dually type

Re: I\'m buying a D60 today - what do I look for?

He wants $1100can for it which at todays rate comes to $841.31us dollars /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: I\'m buying a D60 today - what do I look for?

I was talking about the u-bolt plates that go on top of the springs. They're different from 1/2 & 3/4 ton and can be expensive to buy. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: I\'m buying a D60 today - what do I look for?

ahh I see, good point I wouldn't have thought of that. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif Thanks

As far as checking the hubs can someone give me a clue on the best way to do this?

Re: I\'m buying a D60 today - what do I look for?

You can make spring plates easy enough right????

Re: I\'m buying a D60 today - what do I look for?

Theres always somebody on ebay selling them for 30.00

Re: I\'m buying a D60 today - what do I look for?

dont worry about spring plates, you can always have peeps here on ck5 make em for ya. IMO, definitely not a "deal breaker" on a good used D60...
