Intrested in soft tops for K5's? looking into Manufacturing them. update post 118

10 pages deep into the garage, any updates??:D

I wish I could say there was. I ran into a road block with the mounting hardware I want to use. I have to have it made vs just buy it. Thats going to be a much bigger cost so I have to figure out something else. The odd size EMT tube is the problem actually, But if I use regular "tube" the price goes WAY up, but the mounting hardware I want to use then is NOT a problem.

The Economy and having to tighten spending money up is a necessity and I have been working alot of OT, very little time as usual. I still might use tube but I have to price it in hundreds of feet to make it doable. IF I buy alot of feet of tube to make them and I dont sell many I would be screwed. I possibly may have bitten off more then I can chew which pisses me off. I hav;nt givin up on it but it's not gonna happen as soon as I thought, sorry.

No prob Rob. I know the tightening up deal. I was just checking bringing it back to the top. Good Luck:D

It's probably not a hurry for anyone. With the economy so iffy, it's hard to come up with spare $$ for stuff anyhow. I'm still interested though.

Just trying to keep your faith alive in this project. I have been lurking on this page since the start.

Don't give up. Post your concerns on the forum and have faith the K5 nation will provide solutions or at the very least suggestions. There are so many talented and connected folks on this forum. Use them.

Subscribed and very interested in full 'vert soft top.

If this helps you any, I used EMT on my frame and some box tubeing on top of the body mounted to the OEM holes.t

this top has been on this truck 4 years,in high winds and rain and overall it has worked well. I tried to get those A-holes at CAN-BACK to make me a top but, they didn't want to get into the custom top busness.Plus, they wanted too much money. So I came up with the design and a canvas awning place in Pomona made it for me for 460.00

I think that there is enough hardware out there so you won't need to go too custom maybe the window frames around the doors.

If it helps any, the EMT tube on mine appear to be plenty strong enough at 75 mph on the highway in high winds. The top is loud, but the supports are plenty stiff and never move.

Those tabs sticking out at the bottom of the soft-top: are they marine parts or what? Do the ends twist to keep the top from pulling loose?

Yep, I think they are stainless. I used those because I hate snaps. You'll find them on boat covers

Under the circumstances with our Economy and the fact that we were told we are over staffed and need to move 115 people by April of next your or they will be layed off. I was told I was low risk of lay off but I'm NOT taking any chances so instead of investing in this unknown venture it's going in moth balls for now. It's still something I really want to do but right now it's not a good time. I'm sorry for you all getting you hopes up but I hope you can understand my situation. I'm putting what extra money I have into my blazer and paying a couple of loans off just in case.

Again, sorry :(, Maybe someday in the future when things get better hopefully this can get fired back up. Needless to say I'm disapointed as hell too.

:waytogo: No problem, I have a family now and understand that you have to do whats best for you and them.

I have been working alot of ot, some to pay off a couple of loans and some to put into my never ending project. I can afford that but I need to also do some saving so a venture like this is just not possible right now. I kinda wish I has never posted up about it and just went forth with it till I found out if it was worth it or not, but without asking about intrest, I would have never know IF there was intrest. Now I KNOW there is. This Economy down turn was VERY unexpected. not to mention the pending layoffs at work. Even IF I got this off the ground right now selling them would be near impossible. Noone is buying anything these days. Everyone is feeling the crunch.

I'm interested in building one for my 1974, for my own use...don't care anything about selling them.

Question is how much to build the prototype? With my Blazer it must be a no drill...it cannot be a can top because the whole point for me is having a soft top so I can travel long distances but take it off when I want to and it must fit into the bed behind the rear seat.

I'd be happy to make one or a dozen and be done....

One of my big thoughts was to use the current Softtop available and alter the frame for fit a full vert with no drilling. there MUST be a way to alter the windshield fram "snap bar" to attach using the existing holes. Surely that could be done with a little ingenuity.

My other idea is this which I have heard others mention before but never seen anyone actually do:

Cut existing fiberglass top right behind first rail bolt....somehow attach fabric to fiberglass top...creating a Gen 3 type look for a full vert....however I think the top would fit in the bed behind the rear seat at an angle :dunno:
