Introductions & Greetings

I’ve been on here for over a year…I don’t post a lot. Here is my spiel:

I first came to the site in the winter of 2004. At the time, I had traded a car for a black/purple 79K5 Blazer on 10 bolts with 36” Mickey Thompson Baja Belted tires. It was the definition of a clean mall cruiser. I never wheeled it…and it wouldn’t have made it very far. It was the opposite of my off-road approach. I prefer low to the ground, long wheelbase rigs. This was the opposite. I added $500 worth of carpet, exterior trim, etc from LMC, and sold it for $4500…quite a bit more than I had in it. I’ve owned vehicles of nearly all makes at some point…used to be into the “fast Z28/Monte Carlo SS” while in high school & college in the ‘90’s. I had no interest in 4x4 vehicles at the time.

I bought my first 4x4 in the fall of 2000, and ’86 F-250. I did not lift it, and threw 35’s on it & started wheeling. In 2001, I joined my off road club, Ohio Trailriders. At the time, I was wheeling a stock ’84 F-150 with trimmed fenders & 36” TSL’s. Welded rear end, stock TTB 44 front. The only other regular fullsize rig to be out on the trails at that time was Brad (6.2Blazer on this board). Brad was the club president for the first two years when I joined. We ended up getting along pretty well after a few rides, and often joked about the “elite guys” in bling Jeeps…that sometimes acted snooty towards fullsize rigs…but often needed my Ford or Brad’s Blazer to rescue them when stuck or broke in the middle of the woods. I wheeled the F-150 for one year, then bought a ’78 Bronco because everyone said, “You’ll like it so much better with the shorter wheelbase.”

I lifted it 6” and took it to two trail rides. I did not like the higher center of gravity one bit. On the second ride, I broke a front stub axle, then spit the entire rear end out from under it due to having lift blocks. Felt pretty damn embarrassed, due to it being 8* outside in January. I never touched the Bronco after that day…removed parts & vowed not to return to the trails until I had another longbed fullsize truck. A beefy one ton Ford longbed with “big tires” & no lift was the ideal vehicle at the time.

In May of 2003, I stumbled across “Buford” in the local newspaper. Also, please note that I did not “name the truck” for a few years. I often referred to it as the “Big Ugly Ford…So after using that as a screen name for quite a while, the “BU” initials combined with the fact that it was indeed a Ford seemed to fit. Anyway, the specs upon purchase: ’78 F-250 4x4, 460, C6, dual D60’s, 4.10 gears, NP-205. The guy wanted $1000. I bought it for $800. The truck was very clean, not rotted out, etc. The truck has evolved somewhat since then, but I’ve always kept the same philosophy: Beefy parts that work…not bling stuff to brag about. I’ll provide a link later this evening of the mods…they should be saved somewhere on my club website. I’ve actually been our club president for the past two year.

Anyway, people may wonder why I visit a Chevy 4x4 site when I wheel a Ford…actually someone asked me that on the board today…thought I’d better introduce myself. I guess it’s similar to wheeling…I like to go places where people say I don’t belong.

Anyway, I’ve wheeled with 6.2 Blazer for 5 years, and I’ve wheeled with Jerry (JK5 on this site) a few times, and I believe I’ve wheeled with MadMike (yellow fullsize Chevy 1 ton) once or twice. A lot of wheeling mods are similar between GM, Ford and Dodge…except it seems the Chevy guys always have more options when it comes to parts. I’ll post the history of my mods later today or tonight. Several of them would apply to a Chevy truck as well. It will be a long post, but it will only take a few seconds to paste….since I typed it months ago. Good to meet you guys.

Later,
Roy

Hello my name is Daniel I own a 1977 blazer inch lift 1200 pound wich home made rock sliders 488 gears getting 454 tbi lockers and hopefully a roll cage I live in el paso,tx

Hey all, my names Mike out here in Oakland, Ca. my dd is a 91 silverado step side, 6" lift, 350 tbi stroked to 383, 700r4 jet trans., 456's and 36" swampers. I've got a matching set of d60s front and rear for future solid axle swap, but just got home from hospital after 8 1/2 long months of my battle with cancer.

Even for a big, ugly ford its still a pretty sweet trail rig, I'm kinda in the same boat as you, except most of my friends that I wheel with drive jeeps and toyotas.

I just noticed this thread now.I've already introduced myself in the Northern regional section but here goes. I've been on the board as a member for a couple of months and have learned a lot from reading the forums. I have also had a few questions answered.

I'm 32 and just starting to get back in to wheeling. I live on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Mostly Toy's, Zuki's and Jeeps here due to the tight trails. A little less than a year ago I hit the trail for the first time in several years. I had my 3 year old son with me and we broke a front axle. I was with two Suzuki's so you can imagine getting out of the trail in two wheel drive and only suzuki's to help. At one point we had the zuki's chained together my winch hooked to them and one of their winches hooked to me and it was still a battle. Ended up being a long day and in to the evening. After all the bull**** I realized that my son had a blast. He talked about it every day for a week. GOOD EXUSE TO START THE BUILD. I went from a 87 chev short box Detroit in rear, Lockright in front, both 10 bolts 35" BFG muds, 4 " suspension lift. I built this about 10 years ago give or take.
Now I have a D 60, 14 bolt both Detroit lockers, high steer and 38 TSL's, way more travel up front with Ford shock towers extended lower shock mounts to clear my tie rod behind the diff and locker shocks. I have bought a NP208 crossmember/ skid plade from another member on the board. (still in shipping) and will start making some bumpers and possibly some armor soon. I also plan to go with inboard rear shocks. I will probably tackle this myself but I like the kit I've seen on the Vendor forum. Right now I can't remember who's kit it is.

I work as a mechanic in a large Fleet. The fleet consists of cars, light trucks , Tractor trailors, an excavator, backhoes, police cars and more, so hopefully I can add a little to the forums but I'm sure I will learn a lot more than I have to offer. There's a lot of knowledgable people here.

Thanks,
James

Well I have been a member for almost a year now and I like this site alot. I have met fellow CK5er's here in SoCal and they are pretty cool. I have a 1981 K-5 that I will be parting out and also a 1984 K20 Longbed. I really didn't like four wheel drives until I met my friend Albert Corrall. This guy always talked about lifting my 2002 2wd Silverado with a straight axle kit. Albert was a good guy and like a little brother to me. This October will be 2 years that he has passed. I know that I got into this hobby because of him. We also share a mutal friend named Hector that has helped me get parts and other things that I need to keep my truck running. I am also a student at UTI in Rancho Cucamonga, Ca. Being a tech is my ultimate goal and being a shop owner. I want to specialize in 73-87 (and up to 91 for K-5's) trucks. 4x4 and 2wd. I also have my girl into going wheelin' and has pulled out trucks up at Azusa Canyon. Our next trip will be out to the Imperial Sand Dunes (Glamis) this Thanksgiving. Keep up the good work.

Well, ive been here for a while and finally got around to posting an intro.

My names John and i live in northen jersey. Been into the square body style trucks eversince my brother came home with a '79 K20 and lifted the hell out of it. Had a blown small block, 25" of lift and sat on 44's. It was pretty sweet. and now 12 years later, i want one of my own and joined to learn more and pick up tips here. But right now im working on building some hot rods. But once those are done, ill be looking for a cheap beater that i can lift and haul parts with. Thats about it. Hope you enjoyed my little story.

Hello

I have been hangin in the weeds fora couple of weeks now. You guys have a great site! Lots and lots of great information. I am really thinking of getting rid of my Scrambler now and building myself a K-5. My name is James and I am 32, wife and one kid. The biggest problem I have found with Jeeps is there is no room in them hence the Scrambler. Still not the room, I want. . . Yes, lots of great storage in the back, but at 6'1" and 320lbs, jeep seats really don't quite cut it. Plus my first car was an '81 1ton with a very warmed up 454! So, I have a big soft spot for the old square bodied Chevy's! My brother has an '84 K-5 with some work needed but well on it's way to be something. It's got a healthy 350/350/208 combo. 6" Rought country lift, and 37x12.5x15 SSR's, as far as I know stock axles. Long storie short I ma oging to pick it up in about a week. I will be on here alot more!

How's it going ya'll? I am Chris. I live in Vicksburg, MS and I am 21. I have been looking at this site everyday for a couple of months now and it is awesome. There is alot of great information on here. I am sad to say I don't own a blazer/jimmy........yet. I am in my last semester of RN school and as soon as it is over I am heading to Idaho to buy my grandparents 87 jimmy. I've wanted this thing sense before I could drive! And it is in emaculate shape. It has less than 70,000 original miles on it! and the interior is way cleaner than my truck now. Thanks to this site I already have big plans for it. I wanna do the 14b/d60 conversion with 52" front springs and maybe some 56" rears. Also the extended shock mounts in the front. A shackle flip and whatever else I need to get around 6-8 inches of some nice springy lift and some 38's! Woo I can't wait!!! And to top it off. I'm gonna rebuild the motor to a 383. Oh the benefits of still living with momma and daddy! I'll be seein ya'll again when she's all finished.

LoL..Ive got over 100posts and jus seen this tacked at the top. I figured I might as well say "Hey"

I live in Florida, have an '84 K5. been doing alot of work to it (as you can tell by my posts, lol).

I got lucky in that this was org. a Texas truck aka no rust. The owner b4 me only had it less than a year and jus drove it to work and back. b4 that it was one owner. It was all original when I got it. That is what I was looking for , no rust and not molested. lol.

The biggest surprise about this truck? Well there are two of them. The first is you dont realize how heavy they are til you are in sand or mud and they sink very rapidly.

The second is the courtesy that is jus under the dash new the 4wd lever. The light was missing the bulb so it never lit up. When I was monkeying with some wiring, I seen this black plastic thingy, at first I thought it was an aux. cig terminal for CBs, etc. But it was too small for that. I found a bulb in my junk and stuck er in and walla, I had light. Pretty bright too. lol.

Anyways, Ive had a blast with my Blazer. The mods are pretty endless, its really up to the imagination and money/time. Anyways, once I get things settle, ill pony up for a membership. Ive gotta some really good advice on here and its nice to pass some of my ideas on to see what other think. Our 4x4 community is pretty small where I live, so not much truck talk goes on around here.

Anyways, that is my story. :D

Hey,

Im from Conway New Hampshire. I don't really care for any make other than GMC i dont even like chevy. My 4x4 is a GMC Sierra V1500 4.3 kinda small but its ight. Ive got alot of questions and im willing to learn about my 4x4 so give me a hand if u can.

thanks

I'm Stuart from NEPA. Last year I was bitten by the full-size Chevy bug and bought a '78 K20 long bed stepside with a 350 and a 4-speed. I already had a S10 that was given to me by my father in law but it was a bit too small and way underpowered with the 2.8L. The K20 needs a lot of work (mostly body work) but has served me well hauling stuff from Lowes, getting firewood, etc. It is pretty much stock with 95k miles, the only thing I did was put an Edelbrock 600cfm carb on it, which I had laying around, after the Q-jet crapped out and was leaking gas everywhere.

Last month I picked up an '85 K5 Silverado, also a 350 with a 4-speed. It was originally a 305 but the previous owner put a Goodwrench 350 in it at 100k (now has 157k). It has a lot of new parts but has a ton of rust and some minor electrical problems. For $800 it will make a good project.

Hey man! Good buy!! Does it have the SM465 4 speed or the auto 700R4? Either way its what I have, and I love my rig. Good luck on your new project! I am sure you have alot ahead of you.

Both the '78 and the '85 have the SM465. The 85 is a bit easier on the foot though being hydraulic. I just changed the clutch on the '78. It only took 11-hours. :D I can't believe the old one was still working (more or less). When I got it apart, I found that all but two of the springs on the clutch disk were laying in the bell housing and it was worn down to a hair above the rivets. I do have a lot of work with the '85 and I cry because I saw a K5 in the junkyard with a body tub with almost no rust and no dents. I just don't know a way to manhandle the thing or get it home so I think I'll end up patching mine back together.

Yea, I know exactly what you mean. My rear window shattered the other day when I was doing a hill climb, but the real kicker was that my tailgate fell off while I was driving down the street the other day. I found out the hard way that my whole floor and hinges were completely rusted out. :haha: So I have some serious work ahead on that. And now my transmission went out today after pulling a friend out of a bog. I cant believe it, and my new motor is smoking. I just can't get a break it seems. At least I have one ton axles and new 37in X-Terrains, those aughta last a bit(I hope). But you are dang lucky with those trannys!!!!

hey guys...james here...trying desperately to buy a k5 and to find a local group to help with modifying her afterwards...located in abbotsford bc canada
incredible site for info on lessons learnt and theres some serious rigs on here.
keep up the great work everybody
