Is this 350 still good

I tried two different short water pumps and neither fit flush to the block. Most likely because of the timing chain cover. The long water pump fit perfect.

I have a 3 groove pulley on order for the crank and my water pump pulley is good.

As far as brackets go, they sell “Chevy V belt bracket” kits and I may have to go that route.

The fan situation may have to be resolved with electric fans if this pump pushes it too far into the core and shroud.

I already think I’m posting/asking too many questions already and didn’t want to bug @6872xtc you with DM’s. Let alone it seems @Wes Harden having to answer all my questions in his thread. Maybe I should posts boob pics to get more traffic in here? Hehehe

Like I stated earlier this is my first time putting an engine together let alone starting a truck project from this point. Many questions will be asked unfortunately.

We are here to help and share what we have learned. :waytogo:
I would have to ask for help on so many other things besides an old truck, it's just what some know, or they are learning.
I hope that makes sense.

I would be curious if it could be better to backtrack and find a different timing chain cover, rather than change so many other parts. How much will you end up spending to swap brackets, pullies and the fans, versus go back to the cover?
Just a thought.
Not that you are required to go back to stock, it will just take some parts to swap everything.

Without seeing the timing cover in person. I’m not sure how I would know if the size is different. Maybe Napa has one or something?

I can’t return the long water pump as I already painted it. The short water pump instead of returning to summit I may just hang onto it incase this long pump deoent work out.

Since this engine is early 90’s crate does that matter on the original brackets I have even working with it?

I have 3 groove crank pulley and 2 groove pump. The only bracket I will need is a different alternator bracket and possibly power steering. Hopefully..

Also I suspect the damper is for long pump.

The damper/balancer will be the difference in the lower pully

Stick with the long pump get 70's 350 brackets. Convert to internal regulator alternator.
Get your a/c kit to match
I don’t know what an internal regulator is..
I already have a new alternator

Can you link a long pump 70’s 350 brackets?

I need PS bracket and a new pump but can’t figure out what pump I need to buy.

I found this which is what is on my Blazer

The harmonic balancer doesn't care which water pump. The pulley depth is where they change. Measure the '69 ones against what's on your Blazer.
The alternator doesn'tcare what bracket it is bolted to, check my picture, I have a CS130 on mine. As long as it is a standard, straight across mounting layout, it will bolt on.
The bolt holes are the same on the heads.

The other thing to watch when you get to that point, is to make sure that the lower radiator hose isn't rubbing on the frame flange, the long water pump has a different angle heading down, compared to the short one. And you can't use a hose for the '73 and up trucks because of the size of the lower neck on the radiator. And the '73 and up radiators did not have the upwards bend in the lower neck.

What I am getting at, is it isn't a simple swap to long water pump and accessory drive, lots of things are affected. I have been there decades ago. I am not trying to be a horse's butt here, "simply buying more parts" can keep leading to buying more parts to keep chasing more hurdles. All because of the root problem of the wrong timing cover.
As I said, not trying to be an @$$.

I understand completely.

I can’t find a more narrow timing cover. I can’t return the long water pump, though I do still have the short one.
I’ve read that in 1969 they switched to long pumps but I’m not sure if the trucks did, the cars did.

Will going with a long pump really push everything that far forward? Seems it’s only an inch or so difference. They make bendable radiator hoses I don’t think I need to get a formed lower radiator hose.

I agree I don’t want to just keep buying unnecessary stuff either.
I need an alternator and PS bracket to work with the long pump.

Fun times ain’t it? Hahahahaha

@mrk5
Thanks.. I’m going a bit bonkers searching online. I will order that one.

Any recommendations for a PS pump and bracket?
I assume this would work as well

Also if you look in the power steering bracket, they say you can look at the recommended parts tab for pumps that work with the bracket.

I had always thought the short water pump went on some of the car stuff like Camaros; I didn't realize they came on pickups. I wonder what my 66 has.

If the block is made in Mexico, it is design for the long water pump.

GM Trucks used the short water pumps up until and thru 1972,most cars used them up until 1968 or so,the Corvettes used them beyond 1972 due to space restrictions..

A small block is a small block, there is no difference for which water pump. I have swapped both directions on blocks.
Never found one that wouldn't go either way. But I won't continue that discussion.
The length of the water pump isn't the only thing that moves things, as I said before, but it sounds like you are aware of some of it, so I accomplished passing on of information.

And @diesel4me already pointed out the year change/ split on the pump and bracket information.

I hear ya loud and clear @6872xtc and I appreciate you taking the time to pass on that info. I’m going to press forward with what I have going. Worst case I have to redo everything, or electric fans with an aftermarket radiator.

Now I wait for delivery of everything..,

.

Yes it does try using a long pump with a 283 balancer and see what kind of pulley hell you get into, or vice versa late 350 balancer on a short pump.

@TJ1978 copy your k5 for brackets. Unless you like to go aftermarket. You can use a 73 -79 K5 for searches, just leave out any reference to an AIR pump.

yes the corvette and the 67-72 trucks shared many accessory brackets and the Vette ram horns are the gem to get for the pick ups. iirc 1/4" bigger at the collectors
