Is this a good idea? (truck purchasing scheme)

6.2 Diesel as DD?

Okay, so as it sits, i have just sold my daily driver that was a 99 silverado. It had 180k and was getting pretty rusty. I got 2500 cash for it and between that and working i will have between 4-5k to spend on a new DD. I have been trying to decide do i go truck or commuter car.

My situation is that i will be commuting about 40 minutes one way to school, 3 days a week (this semester anyway) and other than that i will need to drive to work (which is only 5 minutes from my house) and various other nearby places.

I personally want to have a truck if that can work out to be fairly economic, and i think i can make it work, my brother has a camry that i can use to commute to school in if needed. So im not so much worried about gas.

MY QUESTION: after all that, my scheme is to find a 6.2 diesel c/k 10 truck down south (virginia/nc area the furthest) and drive it back home. Do you think this is a practical idea? I am not afraid of working on my truck but i dont want to be working on it every weekend.

Is it true that they can get over 20mpgs? (ive even heard close to 30 with some monkeying...)

How reliable is a 6.2? (other than the fact in the winter it might be troublesome)

Is this a good idea or should i just screw it and give into a world of imports?

Any feedback is appreciated.

I drove mine to Moab. Sunk it, and am just across the Mississippi on the way home. You can find an m1009 in excellent shape in that price range. It will be as reliable as you upkeep it. You need to go through everything on these old trucks. All new ball joints, u joints, expect seals to leak, belts, etc.

Before I lifted my truck I easily got 20 mpg. Lifted I have been closer to 16mpg.

Go for it dude. AJMBlazer found a 6.2 K5 out in Washington and he drove it back to Michigan I believe with the help of CK5.

Richcz28 just drove his CUCV across the country. THey aren't powerhouses, but they do pretty well. I say go for it.

I think they can be decently reliable. I really dont have many miles on my 6.2 under my belt but the ones i do have been pretty good. Ive had to park my truck for over a year with only occasional start ups, used it the other day no problem.

I daily drove my '90 K5 w/ the 6.2 for many years. Of course I bought it in '94 with 49k on the clock so isn't wasn't an old truck by any means at that time. It was also a loaded Silverado so I thought it was pretty nice to drive...and to be honest I would love to have another stock (ish) one as a driver today. This was in Ohio and not uncommon to have mornings below freezing in the winter. Never had trouble starting it through several winters if everything was in good shape, and that means good batteries. The only time it didn't start was a sub-zero morning with 6 or so year old OEM batteries. Besides batteries the glow plugs need to be working properly, and if you can always plug it in there is no problem.

Stock other than 32" mud tires it got 18 mpg with a teenager behind the wheel, which means it could not have gotten any worse mileage. I'm sure it could have gotten 20 mpg easy with reasonable driving. This also had a 700r4 and 3.73 gears stock so a lot more perceived power during take-off and the OD kept the cruising rpm's just right. A CUCV would be a nice vehicle but very primitive and not nearly as good of gearing in both first gear and OD.

can can had a c10 6.2 he sold to a member here few years ago . if I recall he was saying over 20mpg easy .

there was some post and talking back then when he got it and sold it . try searching a bit for the info as I don't recall the details . or even better pm can can .

Cucv has no overdrive, but the op knows that because he has my trans. 3.08s are great highway gears with 32s.

wow surprised at how encouraging you guys are about this, i thought i was going to have to argue my point! Alright, let the search for diesels begin :D

I wouldn't rule out a 6.2 burb.

6.2 is no CTD but there good. there is 14 trucks with 6.2s. most cucvs.. never a real problem.. good batteries, ac60 glow plugs and a strong starter.. no problem in the winter

I'm pretty sure I run 13gs? Isn't that the original specified #?

Here's a little more motivation for you. If you can't read the sign it says 12,095 feet.

It's a terrible idea from a practicality stand point. That said I voted yes. Lol

Just make sure when you get one you do the smart thing as in go thru and do all basic maintenance to bring the old truck up to as fresh as it can be. Bearings seals gaskets ujoints whatnots.

Don't do what most of us do and start adding fun stuff and forget the important stuff

Ive been know to make decisions without thinking practically :haha:

where im coming from is that i know im gonna get one of the c/k trucks, thats already decided. And i think if i go diesel it will be more economical that a gasser. And the lift is just because i like it haha :woot:

And yes i understand, make sure all the basics are solid. Hopefully if i get another truck i will just drive it. my k5 has been in project mode for over a year...
