Is this a good idea? (truck purchasing scheme)

6.2 Diesel as DD?

  • Yes, a 6.2 will give you better mpgs and still allow you to drive an older truck

I would look for a civilian K5. The CUCV's are pretty stripped for a DD.

how do you know its a cucv? wouldnt it have a th400 in it if it were?

Edit:it says it right in the add lol and what do you mean by stripped? i consider most of these old trucks stripped lol

In brief.

Those tires will suck. You will want new rubber ASAP.

That will get terrible mileage and defeat the purpose of the 6.2 while being ungodly slow.

Find a half ton or blazer with a 6.2 for a driver.

that bad huh? i was thinking the tires would be better because they arent all knobby lol

I'm fairly certain you live where it snows. Get a stock truck with a 6.2 and you will be way happier. The 6.2s are really gutless. I love mine but man is it slow.

Also, rough country lifts ride really really rough. I thought my truck still rides pretty stiff with my new springs, but I got in someone's truck I won't mention with a rough country lift ...cough cough Swetty.. And man those springs are brutal.

Have you tried hemmings or something classier than c-list? If your looking at 6k trucks I would expect to find something mint.

would rather not spend 6k, but seems like most 6.2s that ive found on the east coast are around 5k, ones that are in good shape anyway.

The cucv blazer has a th350 not a 400. You lose all the niceties of a k5 without gaining any strength like the k30 version does. I'd keep looking for a sticker with a 700r4 instead of 3 speed. That'll get you better mileage and keep you rpms closer where that 6.2 will be making torque/mileage on the highway

Thanks pal!!!!

On that note, yeah, I wouldn't do a Rough Country lift again. For 500 bucks it was cool and it works, but man does it ride rough.

That truck would actually not do so bad with the 700r4 and that size tires at freeway speeds. As was stated mileage wont be great and niether will ride quality.
If I didn't have one like it already id want it :D

No it doesn't, which is too bad.

Cucv blazers got the turbo 400, not the 350. Personally I'd find a civy version or a half ton pickup. Mine when I got it would easily get over 20 on the highway. That was with a 700r4, 32 tires, and 3.08's and a stock motor. Now with 35's, 4:56's, 700r4 and a modded 6.5 turbo it will still get 18 on the highway. Depending on how I drive of course.

One thing to check on any and every 6.5/6.5 that you look at, is the harmonic balancer. If it looks old, change it. **** even if it looks new but you don't know the age, change it. Then once you own the truck change it every 4-6 years or put a fluid damper on like I did. A bad balancer will cause the crankshaft to break, which is very bad.

That being said, I wouldn't even think twice of dding an old 6.2/6.5 powered truck. Yea they're gutless when stock but they'll get you where you need to be.

I would LOVE to find a late model Silverado trim K5 with a 6.2 for a daily driver.

Can someone explain to me the difference between a cucv and a civilian diesel? i was under the impression that the only thing different was like egr/intake? Unless you are refering to weight differences?

Edit: Also, is this truck have promise in it? like if down the road i swapped a turbo on it? Would it be better then? or should i just look for a half ton?

The civy will have an interior. Speakers, a radio, things like that.

I saw a build where the guy replaced every panel on a 2wd with fiberglass and was claiming 30 mpg.

The turbo may cost more than the truck, but banks claims more economy and power. Check out their site.

If you want the most mpg you can get, stick with non-turbo. That in a 2wd short-bed will net the most mileage.

To get rid of the egr you just change the intake and intake gaskets to a non-egr one. I actually have two extra non-egr intakes that I'd be willing to let go reasonably cheap.

Good call. Idk where I got that from. I was right on the axles though ha

It's not so much the power train that's the issue. Mostly it's all on the inside of the truck. For something to be driven a lot, spending the time to find a cleaner civi k5 I think you'd be happier. But if its in your price range and fits your wants I wouldn't kick a cucv outta bed for eatin cookies

Honestly, I'd look for a 90s 6.5 2 door Tahoe. You'll have a much better ride, much more power, similar mileage, and more reliability. Plus not being so old, it'll be easier to find one in better condition.

This is a good thought. I do see a lot of those with terrible frame rot so you need to be wary. the body will look good but the cab mounts are hanging on by a thread. And, people seem to want 10 k for real clean ones. If you can find one cheap and clean they are definitely nice rides.

I will add, you also get things like working seatbelts, and airbags.
