A while back I posted about a popping noise while turning slowly from a stop. The general concensus was that I had a Gov-loc going bad. It's gotten worse as it appears to be also popping or surging if I'm low in the RPM range and just driving around curves. I can step on it and the surge goes away, but I don't want to lose it going to work if I can replace/swap now.

I pulled the cover today for the first time. The RPO Code says it's a 3.08 but this is a 3.73 and is it a gov-loc? It's got lots of slop....I can turn the wheel and watch the pin in the spider gears (I don't know any better terms) move alot within the diff. How do I know if it's really bad? How do I check it? I don't even know how to pull the axles on from this sucker and the manual I have ain't doing the trick.

Not a Govlock. looks like an Eaton Posi to me. If it is making noise and jerky you may have to put in some Limited slip additive. 4-6 oz will usually do the trick. you can Get it from GM or over the counter at any parts store.

you pull the shafts by dropping that big ol pin in the center with a screw in there. then move the axles in a little bit to get off the c clips. then you can just pull them right out.

If in nuetral you can turn one tire and the other is not moving, there is a problem. You say when you turn the wheel the spider gears turn. How easy is it to turn that wheel by hand and is the trans in park if it's auto or in gear if a standard?

In neutral, I can block one wheel and turn the other by hand. It's really difficult, but I can still turn it. The spider gears turn as well as the drive shaft.

After Thunder said it was an Eaton Posi and mentioned the limited slip additive, I searched and it sounds exactly like my problem. Maybe some additive will help.

Edit....If it's in gear, I can't turn either wheel.

It should be extremely hard to turn one tire without moving the other. Chatter does happen from not using the additive, however it sounds like the clutches are pretty worn as well. I would put the additive in and see how it works. If it works your good, if not your only out about 10 bucks in oil, rtv, and limited slip additive. Good luck.

You can replace the clutches on this unit fairly easy. They are behind the Side gears, as there are no spider gears in that unit . I use to put 2 extra clutches on each side to tighten it up when I raced. We could not weld them up but they could be so tight that it seemed like they were.
