iwaxmyjimmy's build thread 5/28/22 update

So does it run on starting fluid ?

Back fire out the intake means timing is off or valve is stuck. Redo the dist. Put the engine at top dead center and check and see where the dist. is.

Nope tried that too, won't run on starting fluid. I'm pulling the driverside valve cover and making sure I've got the dizzy in right. Just weird how it ran, and now it doesn't even attempt to fire. I can put my finger under the injectors and feel fuel/wetness from them spraying. And it was backfiring out the exhaust which mean timing is too retarded right?

Retimed it and it was firing but wouldn't run, went and hung out inside came back out and noticed an injector wasn't plugged in all the way. It started right up. Let it run for maybe 5 mins at the most and the alternator was getting hot as heck then it just shut off. Key in on position and it's not clicking on the fuel pump. Put a jumper wire on it and fuel pump kicks on. Still won't start with a jumper wire on the fuel pump. I'm really hoping it didn't pop the ECM. Gonna pull up some diagrams and my test light and see if it's a fuseable link that popped. I switched to the CS style alternator with the correct conversion plug when I went to the serpentine belt setup. I'm hoping it's not a bad alternator causing it to heat up too much.

Update, wiggle test and there must be a chaffed wire in the engine harness. Got everything to kick in but no dice in starting yet

Started knocking out the exhaust and ordered the rest to finish the tail pipe. Replaced the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder. Ended up having to move the clutch hose in the top port on the slave cylinder, and then after tightened the bleeder screws had to cut it off flush to clear the exhaust. Running 88-95 summit/pace shorty headers.

Finished the exhaust, started it up and heard a noise. Got scared shut it off. Buddy of mine suggested change the oil filter, out a mechanical gauge on it, pull the valve covers since I've had a problem getting the lifters to pump up. Got 50 psi priming it, crushed the frame filter when getting it off.. which was weird, 4 of the rockers had oil trickling out. Waiting for it to cool off some and I'm gonna pull the intake and check the lifters and lifter bores. I used a junkyard roller cam and set of lifters for the cam swap, considering thats the only thing changed I'm willing to bet I've got a lifter issue since the engine was clean and in good shape when I pulled the intake last year. Gotta get paid again before I can order a new set of lifters but I checked all the pushrods and they were clear. I'm really hoping after putting new lifters in it I'll be able to test drive this damn thing lol.

So I got it running after fixing a few spots in the harness, also figured out I wasn’t getting oil to the cam bearings and pressure sure I spun one of them. So I pulled the 350 out, it’ll get a rebuild and repurposed, and called a buddy up and got a 5.3. I had a few issues finding headers that would fit my needs and it took forever for me to gather all the parts on my budget. I’ve probably got $2500 in my swap if not $3k but it runs and drives now. I’ve still got a lot left to do, a bunch of stuff to clean up and make it look much better and cleaner install. But I’ll just post a bunch of pics. Today I’m gonna finish up a few things on it, I picked up some gears and 35 spline outers. I’ve probably go another month before I can wheel it. I’ve sorta started a business working on ppl Jeeps/trucks because local shops suck. It’s keeping me more busy than I’d rather be.

Oh and I’ll just share how bad my garage got over the last year, and I finally cleaned it out so I can work on stuff inside. I actually drove it around the neighborhood after I did the dual 3” exhaust and redid my y pipe. Felt good, sounds great, but I need to fix my cracked rear main spring, install my anti wrap perches, got some 99-04 f250/350 front driveshafts to cut down and make work. Need to buy everything to put the 1410 joints at the axle ends. I’ll update this more often, been slacking. Haven’t figured out how I want to do my rear shocks, debating on building a cantilevered setup so I don’t have to cut the floor or and the pogo effect isn’t my thing with inboarding them

Looking good! Any updates on the jeep?

Nope, I buy things here and there for it, I’ve got the steering for the 1 tons just haven’t spent any time on it. My gf’s dads properties took some pretty bad damage during hurricane flo, I quit working on everything and stopped taking in work to help get that back up and livable for him.

Started noticing a hard start issue, figured Out it was losing its prime for the fuel system. I’ve got an injector or two hanging open, I replaced 5 out of 8 just to make sure it ran on all 8. So picked up another 3 injectors to swap in but haven’t had time lately with my back going out again. I made a list last night of what else I need to buy, and it’s getting shorter and shorter. Still have to do the shock hoops which I’ve decided I’m just gonna build some hoops up front and rear with this tubing bender I got. I’ve got some 1.5x.120 DOM I was gonna use for the bedcage and the front hoops/engine cage. I’ve thought about buying a cage from kert to at least build off of, but I’m feeling froggy and want to build it myself. I did the 56 spring swap out back, and I’ve got some anti wrap perches that I’m debating on stretching the rear a little bit 2 1/2”. My approach angle is pretty decent but my departure angle leaves a good bit to be desired. I’m really trying to set this up so if I go coilovers and links in a few years then I can reuse my shock hoops. I’ve really been considering seeing if I can suck the fuel tank up higher than what is is right now. Also need to build a skid plate for it. Still have to build a bell pan and what not. Picked up the 1410 parts I need to put those joints at the axle ends. Just been waiting in my back to get itself together befor I can start wrench on it again. I got a wild hair up my ass to maybe even look into attending blazer bash this year if I can get some seat time in and prove the reliability of this thing.

Jeep has been sitting in the back yard for a good bit, so went to move it and battery was dead as hell. No biggie k5 runs, so drove it back there and jumped the jeep off and tried turning the k5 around and got it stuck. I haven’t built the front driveshaft shaft for it yet, nor have it put the 38.5s on it. So it got stuck in wet grass and he jeep has the pull it out while my gf who can’t drive a stick was driving my jeep. Needless to say 4:1 tcase was a life saver because all she had to do was let the clutch out then push it back in.

Bit the bullet and ordered some 2.0 ifp Fox shocks this morning for it. Also will probably take a shot at shock tuning hopefully this summer. Depends on when I buy all the tools I need to do it. Never done it before but I’m really excited to find out. I’ve got another build thread for my Jeep. Plan is to put that on some 2.0 emulsion coilovers on it and then in a few years, or whenever I can afford it, I want some 2.5 coilovers with reservoirs with the compression dampening adjustments. Then I’ll transfer the 2.0s to the k5 and link it. So I’m sure I’ll go through some valving changes. I bought a tubing bender last month, and a 1.75 die to do my own cage. Hopefully soon I’ll buy a 1.5 die to do my shock hoops like I would like to do. I’ve still got to replace a main leaf on my driverside rear leaf spring, before I build an RTI ramp so I can check all my clearances. Which I’ve got to put the jeep on stands or finds some cheap rollers for it so I can put the 38.5s on th k5 so I can actually check clearances. I plan to do front shock hoops that will tie into the cages A pillar and also have connections to make it an engine cage. Out back I plan on doing a bed cage kind of to outboard the shocks and keep them as verticalish as I can. Got some dimple does and I like trolling the local shop with fancy west coast cooking fab work.

I’ve got a k10 in my garage I’m having to repair the frame on for someone. Steering box ripped off and someone did a half ass repair to it. Drilled holes at the end of all the cracks, Ive still got to “u” the out. I’ll also have to fab up a plate for the inside as well to sandwich it before can send him on it’s way and feel like he won’t have issues again.

My shocks came in along with my new grill and headlight bezels. Ordered a 1.5x4.5x180 die for the bender as well so I can do the shocks hoops and rear bumper.

I bit the bullet was ordered everything to build an electric over hydro setup for my bender. It was $500 for the ram, the pump is for a dump trailer and 12v. I can use a car battery no biggie. Gotta pick up the hose but they are SAE fittings so no biggie on that either. This is how I justied not putting lag studs in my garage floor and I have some caster wheels rated for way to heavy duty than a bender cart will be. I’m excited I haven’t done much tube work but I picked up a cheaper notcher last year that I’ve started to get the hang of pretty good. Got the materials to bend up the front hoops and I’ll probably have to pick up some for the rear. Big thing is I’m having fun dicking around in the garage. Ordered my 5th wheel so I can have a full size spare for the k5 and will likely get the tires swapped over to those wheels once I put the shock hoops on it.

Got my stuff in, built my bender, and now I’ve gotta get a hose and a fitting to make it all work. Gonna build a pan to go under the notcher and shield the tubing die holder. I’m just gonna stare at it and make transformer noises.

I’ve gotta finish rebuilding a JKU rear for a guy and then finish the frame on this k10 in my yard for another friend. Then I can build the shock hoops for the k5. Gotta make money to buy tools to build my own stuff.

So the last 2 months have flown by and I’ve been working ass off on my rig and everyone else’s. Regeared a CJ, did a lift on a tundra, got the k5 registered and all legal beagle. Gotta order a few things so I can finish up some stuff and hopefully take it on it’s first wheeling trip may 17-19th.

The bad, I’m already kind of wanting a nv4500, it’s running pretty damn rich, and I need to replace the printed circuit board in the cluster. But so far I’ve put 153 miles on it. But onto the pictures.
