Jeep XJ Steering Shaft - Sweet upgrade!

I just did this mod and WOW, steering is so much better. I used a shaft from a late 90s wrangler. Perfect length, but I did have to open up the column end of the shaft quite a bit with a die grinder. Steering box end fit fine.

Just finished this mod on my Sub....whoa, even with my crappy steering box, it's 100% better. The shaft part on my '90 Sub is moving in and out of the firewall so it made the heating/fitting part a bit easier. Had to notch that part to fit the bolt thru.....

Just don't understand why Chevy didn't roll this straight outta factory :doah::dunno:

I'm gonna have to try this soon. Might as well as long as the engine is out of my suburban.

OEM design is at least 3x cheaper. When the rag joint does go bad it's an easy repair for the dealership and the customer says "wow, it's SO much better than it was." Just guessing though.

It would be the same like convincing costumers that hand crank starting of your engine is a good way to exercise....:haha:.....I've never understood when pencil pushers from budget office started telling engineers what is good for a new model of vehicle :doah:

Did not mean to hijack this thread , just could not remember why the xj shaft wouldn't work on the older trucks.

im having a bit of trouble with the Xj shaft. its slipps just a bit on the column side of the shaft. i tightened it as much as i can but its still wiggling just a bit. solid while turning but when you hit either direction of full lock and go to turn back the shaft slips slightly before it moves the wheels. should i be concerned and weld it on a street truck or is it normal

Did you notch the steering column shaft? If you did, check the shaft to see if there is a metal bur or something keeping it from closing all the way. :dunno:

i ran a drill through the jeep shaft to get a new bolt and nut all the way through. didnt mess with the OE column side at the firewall

you really need to notch the column side, gotta find a picture of that. Every write up describes a small file mark that needs to be done. That's what I did, otherwise the bolt wouldn't go through. Works bitchin

yeah....and it is soft steel in on that part. I was very surprised how easy and fast I made that notch. You don't need to take much off.....

got it figured out. it was slipping right below the ujoint at that odd looking flange. welded up and no slop in the steering
