Just bought a CUCV for $625.

Like dog ****.

It has some switch on it that runs it at high RPM till it warms up.

Impressive, assuming you weren't running the block heater (that would be cheating!). I'm not driving either of my trucks this winter, but I'm tempted to go fire them up just to see how well they'll do at this temperature. I've not attempted to start either truck below +5 degrees without using the block heater. I have no idea how well they'd do below that point.

Cold idle switch runs both idle advance and timing advance solenoids. Both are located near each other toward the top of the IP. Should both be connected to the same wire (green on my trucks).

My 6.2 sounds like a stonecrusher when it starts below +20 degrees..
IF it starts!...for the first few minutes you wonder if its going to lose a piston or just come to a sudden halt, but so far it hasn't...once it warms up its almost silent compared to a cold start..

So far I've been pretty lucky about getting it started in frigid weather,I only have 7 working glow plugs (maybe less now!),and I only had to boost the batteries or jump start it 3 or 4 times in a dozen years...but we dont get as cold here as Nebraska either...it stays above zero pretty much..

I rarely plug in my block heater, its only an inline heater hose type,I think all it does is make sizzling noises, the hoses only get hot for a foot or so away from it...engine doesn't even know its plugged in!...

I see a factory freeze plug heater is still in the block, but the cord was chopped off and is just hanging there--probably got snipped at the junkyard when they pulled the engine out of a donor...(the engine in my pickup isn't the original)..

The biggest improvement in cold cranking speed I've noticed was using lighter oil than 15W-40...the gear reduction starter helps, but I didn't see a big difference between that one and the old non-reduction one I had in it before really..my oil pressure has dropped a lot at idle when its fully warmed up though, that bothers me some..

Damn, that was ugly as hell. Looking better though. This makes me want to find an un-molested CUCV.

Lift pump took a dive.

Installed a new one.

That sucked.

Ditched that stupid ass lift gate.

I've never had to replace a lift pump (mechanical engine mounted one) yet, mine looked new when I got the truck...hope I never have to,it does appear to be a sucky job,its tough to get at...I imagine trying to keep the push rod in place while installing it is a joy..:surepal:..

I also have an electric fuel pump I added near the tank to aid in priming the fuel system if I ever run out of fuel--and I have a few times,it saved my butt...
I'd be tempted to just run the electric pump alone and by-pass the lift pump if it craps out on me..

does the 6.2 not share the same trick as the gas jobs ?

remove the short front lower bolt in front of block and thread in long thread bolt to pinch the pushrod in place and hold it when you do the pump .

then when done reinstall the shorty bolt as its a plug for the hole .

I wondered the same thing, but did nor pursue the thought. It is pretty tight in there.

I always just take the block off plate off, wipe the push rod clean, coat it with some grease, and shove it back in the hole.

That is not near as dirty as it sounds.

The problems were other things..

Not that I've noticed. John Deere has been using a similar fuel filter since the 60's.

I added a receiver hitch off of a 1986 K10. Bolted right on. It has been previously modified to accommodate a shackle flip, so it only has four 1/2" bolts (instead of 6) holding it to the bottom of the frame. I am thinking I should probably add some additional straps to hold it in place?

Then I have another painted bumper (it's currently argent silver), that needs painted white for the rear of the truck. The CUCV guys are going to kill me!

Did the hitch fit with the rear shackle mounts?

With 2 of the 6 mounts cut off it did. That was with a DIY4X shackle flip.

It's cold and ****ty here.

Also, the starter took a ****. Time for a 12 volt swap.
