Just got 86 blazer, need help, got alota ideas

here's 38377k5's hitting what i would call a very "off-camber" situation. he's running a tuned, stock quadrajet, in fact, I think he still is. (but don't quote me on that haha:D)

Ultimately, what benefit do you expect to get from the Holly on a stock engine? It won't really outperform the Quad and IMO you can spend the $300+ on other stuff you really need.

Yeah ill probably end up going with a rebuilt quad. Its alot cheaper than a new truck avenger.

the other one I forgot to mention earlier was doing that cooler for the 700r4 ASAP would be a good thing... they don't like heat at all...

Im having the treanny built up now, all kinds of goodies including a trans temp guage and cooler.. But my trans is a Turbo 350 not 700r..

Well some of you will be glad to know i just ordered my new quad! I hope is works out like yal say!

I quick update on my build. Got the MSD pro billet distribitor in, after eating my lunch for a hour, couldnt get my marks to line up, had to turn the oil pump. Got my long tubes on and im mounting the electric fuel pump as we speak. I hope to get the new carb on tomorrow and fire it off. Im hoping i dont have the distribitor one tooth off.. It looks about right! Lol.

I think you will be pleased. And if not, maybe after using a Holley anyways...
My friend had a high output 350 in his Lancruiser. 350+HP, 400+lbs. Ran great on the street. used to race some pretty fast cars on the street... touch dirt, and the whole car ran like ****. Washboard roads, climb over a rock the size of a beach ball, uphill, downhill, sidehill, even going up a couple steeper highway grades on our way to wheelin spots...
HOLLY=NEVER AGAIN!

he actually hated the way it performed so much, that he sold the car without ever trying to swap carbs...

Good choice, Cuztom. I had a single feed Holley on a Bob Sharp Racing manifold on my 240Z. It was transverse mounted (float bowls left and right versus front and back). If I took a corner too fast, it would die from either flooding or starving. I don't know how road racers deal with the issue; I imagine main jet extension tubes would keep it from starving at least. The Qjet will treat you wonderfully; there's no reason it can't make gobs of power. Look at all the high-horsepower GM engines made in the past with a Quadrajet on top. The 454 in a 1970 Olds 442 W30 comes to mind. Explain that engine if you think that any engine with a Quadrajet can't make power.
You'll love the Quadrajet over the Holley.

Oh, and the Quadrajet seems to be less prone to vapor lock and fuel boiling as well. I had a hella time with that on every Holley equipped engine I ever made.

It helps alot to have an aluminum manifold. ;)

Thanks guys yeah after alot of searching and reading up on both setups i decided the quad was right for me. Had a guy out of KY cuztom build me one just for my setup. I just hooked up the electric fuel pump today, should have gas to the carb tomorrow and fire it up.

Question??? I put in a new MSD distribitor so where does my timing need to be??

I'd put it around 10* BTDC then play with it from there until its right.

Thanks! Well i didnt get it busted off. I put to much on my plate while i was at home. Im leaving back out offshore tomorrow for 3 weeks. I got everything done but the hot wire to the electric fuel pump teminated..

Where do you guys run your hot wire for the fuel pump and for the choke???? I've heard the ACC fuse for the pump and straight to the alternator for the choke.. Ideas??

Choke should be to hot in the run position, and the factory had it wired through an oil pressure switch. No oil pressure (not running) no power to the choke. Otherwise if the key is on for any reason and the engine hasn't been started immediately the choke will begin to open. Then you get to fight through a lousy cold starting issue...or wait for the choke to cool and try again.

God I hate carb'd vehicles...

In the fuse panel I noticed a fuse named "choke". Is that where the factory choked was wired? If so I can just tap into that right?

That would be the circuit, but what you should probably do is find the current stock choke power wire, and confirm that with just the key 'on' it doesn't have power, but with the engine running it does. Then trace it back and you should find it tapped into an OP switch at the rear of the block by the distributor.

No sense trying to re-invent the wheel...

Weeell I put in a new MSD distributor in this weekend and I remember seeing the oil pressure line but there was no switch on it. Reckon autozone sells that stock style switch? And yeah I'm sure I can find that choke wire, there is bout 7 or 8 wires cut in the engine bay coming from the fuse panel.
