K10: Built HP60/241-205 Doubler/tons of tube

Whoa. Didnt' realize you were that much younger than i am.

I'm 27 now.

Good work avery. Don't even want to think about what i could have done with what i've been paying in rent....but hopefully i'll own a place soon!

Crazy. Avery i thought you were my age, 25. And Darren, i thought you were like 33. Ok sorry for the hijack.

Whew you guys are young. I can't even dream of affording a nice truck like that and I'm 33. Plus I would destroy everything on it in the attempt.

One dumb question here Avery. What's the advantage of having the little short tailpipe that turns down right out of the muffler like that? Is it just to keep it from hitting stuff? I've seen a lot of tailpipes done like that lately. Just wondering.

Exhaust looks awesome. That guy did a super job. I like how he did the pipe up over the rear driveshaft so you don't have to undo the exhaust to take the shaft off. I remember that was one thing that bothered me way back when I had the stock single exhaust on mine.

I think those STS tires do good on the street too from what I've seen around here. You're not planning on driving it on the street anymore though are you?

Now that you're close to getting through with all this stuff, I think after this year's wheeling season is over, it's time for a big block and TH400 with manual reverse valve body to go with your doubler and one ton axles.

Oh and get you and adjustable proportioning valve for the brakes. Keep up the good work! :thumb:

Ha! I'm not changing drivetrain stuff anytime soon. I traded the 32 spline input to get this one setup to go behind my 700r4.
I do drive it on the street for fun sometimes, it's registered/insured, has mud flaps and the license plate has a light so I'm good.
The exhaust is just like that. Keeps it out of the way and sounds good.

We'll see how the 700 holds up with that doubler. Actually, the doubler may help take some stress off the trans in off road situations. Mine couldn't hold up and now it's living out in the yard in a plastic bag.

Got back in town today and went over some small odds and ends I've been meaning to check. Figured out the plan for the floor so we'll get that knocked out tomorrow afternoon and get the seats back in so I can do some test drives and see what needs to be addressed.
Assuming the test drive goes well I figured out what to do for the front shocks and it's going to be easier than I thought thanks to a little luck. :)

Well tonight was the night. My dad gave me a hand and we made up a flat floor, got the seats in and took it for a test drive. The floor came out pretty nice, just a big flat piece that bends up in the back and has two little pieces welded in on the front on both sides of the trans tunnel. I used some stick on foam insulation to seal it to the floor and bolted it through in a few spots.

Running the duct tape floor around the shifters until we get home and I can make/buy a boot for them.

So we did that and got the seats back in then fired it up and started around the block.... and that's when it hit.... the DEATH WOBBLE. Thought I was going wreck it was so bad.

So I nursed it back home and decided to check out the pre-load on the kingpins and even though I had them tight when I put the knuckles on they were really loose. So I snugged them down, locked the lock-nut down and went out for another test drive. Perfect! No more death wobble.

So I drove it around really easy for a bit, ran it up to the dollar car wash to spray everything off, ran down the freeway for a few miles to get it up to speed and did some slow speed stuff through the neighborhood.
I do have to say though I wouldn't want anything higher in the gearing department. Going down the freeway just keeping up with traffic I'm turning about 2300rpm. If I would have gone 4.88's I would have been lugging it bad.

So tomorrow night I'm going to mess with the bump stops and get the shocks mounted. I figured out that the ford towers off the back are going to be perfect to get me by for the time being until I get my cage done up front and can mount the shocks to that.

WooHoo! Pismo bound Wednesday!

Sweet dude! Good job as usual!

And Darren, Nope. Not 40. Just "young punk" at 25. I will be 26 in September though.

Those towers should work just fine. Surprised it's not done more like you said. Was thinking, if you want run a straight piece off the back of those to a flat piece to top of frame. Like a upside down "T" in back of towers. You don't even have to bolt to top of frame and just a couple opposing 1inch welds on the straight piece running down back. More for piece of mind instead of maybe dealing with it all mangled in the sand taking out some steering stuff you've worked hard on. 40min tops to do
Just a thought.

Looks awesome Avery. Nicely done.

Brace them shock towers up on the back side. They have a way of pulling off the side of the frame.

Thanks man.

You know I've read that a lot but I ran these in the rear for years with just the two bolts and when I pulled them off at the beginning of this build the frame was fine. Maybe I don't wheel as hard as some of you guys. :dunno:

So tonight was the last chance to get anything done before the trip and since we're dumb we decided to spend all night making shock mounts. I guess in the end it'll be worth it but man am I tired. I'm happy with how they came out. It'll get me by until the cage gets up there and I can mount them to the cage but realistically that could be a year... maybe more, ya' never know.

I welded them on both sides, the bottom and added a gusset because hey, it's a gusset and you can't go wrong. :haha: I'm tired if you can't tell. :doah:
I had to modify the driver's side mount to reach over the steering shaft a little more and I made a tiny notch in it about a 1/2" deep just to be safe so the steering shaft doesn't have any chance of hitting it.

So here's some shocks...

At this point everything is what it is. Tomorrow night I'm loading it up on the trailer, packing some tools and Wednesday afternoon I'm Pismo bound. Should be fun with these tires, the right gears and being locked front and back.

Looks sick dude. I like how you have the bumpstops mounted to the spring plates too. That way there's no chance of them getting chewed up/broken off by the u-bolts in the dunes. :pimp: Piiiiiiimp

Well this isn't the update I was hoping for. I headed out Wednesday after work for the dunes, made the 3 hour drive there without any issues but then proceeded to fight with the truck the whole time we were there. Chevysmithz71 was there with us and he figured out my distributor cap wasn't seated properly and I had to put some fresh gas in it but even those fixes weren't enough. It's hard to start, backfires through the carb and if you shut it off with the rpm's anything over 500 it'll backfire out of the exhaust. It has no power either.... not really sure what is going on but I'm going to start with rebuilding and putting on that quadrajet I have in the garage.

The good news is everything we did is working great. The steering feels good, the shifters and doubler are a blast and make the truck a whole lot more fun to drive. I had it up to freeway speeds a few times and it doesn't have any driveline vibrations or weird characteristics.

So I'm giving myself a break for a while, I need to replenish the funds (I went a little crazy the last few weeks before we left), get the garage back in order, sell some parts I have laying around and get some rest but I'll be back at it soon enough to get this whole thing sorted out.

I managed to snap a few pics from this weekend.

These two are cell phone pics from one night when it was getting dark. Not nearly as good, too bad because it was a cool spot.

Sounds like timing is way retarded...

4x4high suggested I look into a jumped timing chain and when I got to work today my boss said the same thing before I even told him it had been suggested. I think you all might be onto something.
