K10: Built HP60/241-205 Doubler/tons of tube

what's the mileage on the mill?

No idea, the odometer hasn't worked in years and even when it did it was way off. I know its really tired though. Compression is low and I had a friend with a small shop hook a vacuum gauge to it a few years ago and he said it wasn't pulling what it should be.

could be time for a long block, or maybe even the LS swap...

4x4high suggested I look into a jumped timing chain and when I got to work today my boss said the same thing before I even told him it had been suggested. I think you all might be onto something.

I was thinking timing slip too

I think 8.1 was brought up elsewhere as well.... How bout some peer pressure to make it happen!

8.1
8.1
8.1!

This ^^^ :D :D. How sweet would an Lq9 6.0 be at the dunes :pimp:

I agree it would be awesome but I'm still leaning towards making this truck a dedicated trail truck and building something just for the dunes, preferably a 4 seater.

Oh and yes ryoken its long past due for a long block. I was looking at some of the base gmpp engines and they're pretty dang reasonable these days.

Avery has stuck true to himself and done things his way and has made one hell of a rig. Whatever way he ends up i'm sure it will fit his needs and work well. :thumb:

Pretty sure you can get a vortec roller cam long block for under 2k...

In all seriousness, JEGS has free shipping on all GM Crate engines. You should avoid the 290hp 350 though, the cam is an archaic grind meant for a 327 and people have a hard time getting it run right. Blue Print has some affordable 350hp+ engines. Also Yearone has some nice crate engines. They have a 400+hp 350 for $3k last I checked. Search for Yearone crate engine on here I made a thread on it a while back.

Wait don't you work at a machine shop? :screwy:

I saw that engine for the first time in Tim Cameron's new buggy, wicked engine but not what I need in this truck.
Yes I do but we don't do a lot of engine machine work besides some boring/sleeving repairs on big tractors from time to time. I could do it but for the price of a crate engine these days its hardly worth it.

So then the question is what do you need in this truck?
I would have to agree with you on going the crate route unless you are just doing a stock rebuild. I thought I could save a few hundred building my engine myself but its the little things that get ya. Came out to be a wash for crates with same HP and displacement I was going for. However, building my 355 was a very cool experience and I very much so enjoyed it. Some say its even a right of passage for us gear heads. ;)

Average to stock power (thinking nothing north of 300) but more importantly something that runs consistently whether I'm at sea level or the top of our trails at 9,500+ feet. I have gears so I don't really need power.

other thing with crates is you often will get a warranty. atleast with blueprint engines i think its like 3 year or 30k some nonsense

Horsepower is like sex, you can never have too much.

EFI of some sort is a must...

Speaking of which for the big picture plans chevy305 how do you like the FAST system? Seems like good bang for the buck when it comes to aftermarket fuel injection systems.

Theres a guy at silver lake with a 6.0 in his blazer, paddles in the back, but the motor def sounds built, I COULD HAVE SWORN IT WAS A BBC the first time i heard/saw him rippin. Its fast :bow:

LOVE IT! Its just so easy to use and it self tunes. Everytime you run the engine it just runs better. Plus any future mods (like my roller cam swap) the ecm will retune itself no problem. I would recomend it to anyone :waytogo:. However, between the cost of the kit and all the little incidentals, you'll be into it for about $2500. So all this convenience and consistance performance comes with a price tag... But if you're staying stock or close to it, you could save yourself a lot of money with a factory TBI setup like he said:

For your goals, I would just buy a TBI truck and strip it.

Martin

Try to find a '96+ truck thats been wrecked or fresh into a parts yard. Pull the motor and all associated TBI stuff and you'd have yourself a decent EFI roller vortec 350. I think they made around 250hp stock. Add your headers and exhaust (that you already have), an aftermarket intake, and a tune and I'd think you'd be pushing 300hp.

A 1996+ truck does not use TBI. They use a different setup, that no one really seems to use. With the correct intake, you can use the Vortec long block with TBI though. You can buy 1988-1995 pickups for next to nothing.
