K30 with a 6.2

View attachment 230756 I have posted in the Garage section but I was thinking this may make a better place for my stupid questions about my 1982 K30 with a 6.2.

Here are todays
I has a new pump and runs pretty good. Should it smoke? I mean it doesn't smoke at all but I haven't put alot of load on it but accelerating it doesn't ever smoke.

The previous owner put on a puroilator fuel pump in right after the tank switch and unhooked the mech pump. Is there a reason I can't just run both? More or less use the elect to feed the mech pump? I thought it would help prime the filters and such after a filter change.

They only really ever noticeably smoke if something is wrong, or if the pump has been turned up. Mine won't exactly roll coal, but it does smoke pretty good at WOT. The pump has been turned up though. My old Jimmy with a new IP (4911 specs) would hardly smoke.

I think diesel4me ran an electric and the mechanical pump together. Either or is fine, as long as whichever you run is working right. It needs to supply 5-7 psi just like a carb'd engine.

So would it help to turn my pump up a little? It is a little nutless at the top of the throttle. I was thinking 1/16 of a turn.

Yeah,I have 2 fuel pumps on my '82 K2500--one is a universal electric one that looks like a gas filter, mounted close to the tank,in series with the stock mechanical lift pump...........................................................................................................................................................................................................I usually leave the electric one running, but I can switch it off with the toggle switch I put in,and the engine continues to run OK with it off,you can hear a noticeable difference in the idle quality and the diesel clatter with it off..it seems more peppy with the electric pump "on" and also seems to help it start easier.....I like the electric pump most when I happen to run out of fuel or when I change filters, because you dont have to burn up the starter cranking it forever ,before the injectors finally bleed the air out--you just open the top bleeder on the fuel filter and leave the key on,until fuel comes gushing out, then it'll fire up pretty quickly........................................................................................................My '85 Suburban has a similar electric pump a former owner installed,in a dumb place--right on the outside of the frame, just behind the right rear spring shackle!..:doah:...it was completely coated with clay and dirt, plus they used 3/8" rubber fuel line all the way to the Raycor filter on the firewall, which I'm sure dont help any..........................................................far as I know the stock mechanical lift pump isn't hooked up any more...that truck often is a bitch to get started, and I'm not so sure its the glow plugs, because it seems to want to fire up right away, but unless you keep it floored and let it race a good 10 seconds,,it acts like it ran out of fuel--leaving the key "on" and waiting a minute or two seems to let fuel build back up in the filter, then it'll finally start most of the time...I usually need to jump the half dead batteries by then though....that 6.2 might be tired though,or need injectors,it smokes some out of the drivers side bank....

That is a 6.2 trait. Where it shines and impresses is off idle to mid range...then things rapidly fall off power wise. this isn't an inherent flaw or a knock on this engine, it's just the way it is without a turbo. I think 1/8 to 1/4 turn is fine for upping the fuel rate, you're not gonna hurt it without a turbo.

With 3.42 gears and 235/75's and an open diff mine will spin the tires if I hammer it, and off the line it does quite well.

Mine kicks ass down low. I find myself leaving it in 4th and grunting it around instead of down shifting. Since I may pull with it I will be conserative. I will be adding a pyrometer. I it will get a turbo someday. Will the 6.5 stuff fit on a K30? No A/c box but worried the front driveshaft.

6.5 stuff can be made to work. It is not ideal and you have to be careful with frame clearance when routing pipes between the block and frame. But, it has been done many times.

I was the local car clubs dyno day. On the mustang dyno it make 126 HP and 242ft/lbs of torque after I pulled the air cleaner lid. Gained 10hp and 10 tq with that mod so time to figure out a better aircleaner. We tried some fogging with nos and despite the horrible noises it did make a gain but we shut it down early. I think the new pump is turned up 10% or so. We did see where the govenor maxed out at and it went to 4000 which is a hell of a lot for a diesel.

That is also a good/bad way to test how badly the bottom end of your motor is cracked! I snapped a crankshaft on a 6.2L doing 70 down the freeway, approx 3000 rpm via calculators. That was not a fun day.

I check the records at the local dealership where the previous owner that is no longer with us had it serviced. In 02-03 it had New head gaskets and head insert installed, new injection pump, new glow plugs, new balancer and 2 new lifters and push rods (for low compression). Not sure it that is good or bad. I was hoping since it is the red block maybe it wouldn't be cracked.

Will the 6.5 manifolds bolt on to a 82 6.2? Is there something different in the injector angle? This truck has now a/c so that isn't a problem.

No the A/C box is the only thing I know in the way, every thing else is no problem.

So if I could find a stock set up I could run it a while with the pump turned up? I wonder how much boost it will take? I have turbo off my 454 project that was making 12 psi at 2000 rpms.

anyone have any good ideas about finding a small leak in the lift pump to tank line? I see no leaks but it hard starts after sitting. Today I opened the vent on the filter and air came out for a bit so I am getting air somewhere.

I bought a banks manifold so I can slowly piece together a turbo kit. I have a 6.5 turbo I may use to start with.

Got a banks manifold in the mail, have a 6.5 turbo. Would like a serp drive and a/c comp off one.

did some pulling with my 82. Pulled my K30 on my 22' trailer and 2 golf carts. Against the wind it cleared some hills at 35 mph. Thinking it is time for a turbo. I have a 6.5 turbo and a banks manifold. I am thinking 9 psi will a big help.

Im interested to see how the turbo mod goes and how much it helps. Subscribed :thumb:
