K30 with a big block question?

L29's are factory roller cam blocks too. Just throwing that one out there.

Plus if one would be planning on keeping EFI on an L29 and have better control of the later LS style 0411 ECM, it's just a matter of swapping a couple of items to make it like an L21. L21's were medium-duty only but have the same coil near plug ignition that the LS engines and the 8.1L big-block has. You lose the distributor and gain better tuning ability with a 24x reluctor wheel. The 0411 ECM is an overall better unit than what the L29 is normally driven by.

Is Ian keeping the stock EFI on his L29?

He just ordered the L21 24x reluctor wheel yesterday. He talked to Howell and they can do his harness for an L21 and set up a 0411 ECM for him too. So it will look like a cross between an L18 and an L29.

Rob, do you know an honest to goodness price that it would cost to run a set up like this?

A guy just wonders if this route is cost effective compared to the aftermarket efis that are on the market these days.

Well, it would run the 4L80e, if you’re into that. Am curious about the cost. Seems maybe a better option than EFI and aftermarket controller

True, but if your running a manual that cancels that cost benefit.

EFI connection sells the kits for the 24x reluctor and cam sensor that replaces the stock dizzy. Depending on your timing set could be $525-625. You still need a specific engine harness and 0411 pcm. Howell is in the $700 range for the harness and they can supply the ECM with a baseline tune for more.

So if you're scraping one together your pushing 1500 bucks pretty quickly.

So i guess you would really have to look at it and decide if thats the route for you or if something like the Broflow is the right move for yourself.

Well in my buddies case he needs a stand alone engine harness either way. So in his case it was an expense he was already planning on. The conversion saves him the need of buying a new dizzy as the stock ones do tend to wear so it's a offset in cost also. The reluctor is the main thing he needed that isn't the norm. The rest of the ignition system. Is a little more pricey as you need 8 coils vs 1 but there is no need to buy the ignition control module that the L29 runs. Plus a set of L21 or L18 valve covers so you have a place for the coils to mount up to.

But to your point it's still in the same territory cost wise as most aftermarket systems. Comes down to preference at that point. Do you want the OEM look or aftermarket style? For a truck that's going to see some towing I'd stick with the long runner L29. If HP was the main goal to go fast, bro-flow or a dominator setup would be better.

How would that setup be with a hot cam?
No difference than dealing with a hot cam in a LS engine. Needs tuned by someone that knows what they are doing. I'm not sure of the specs of the one we just put into my buddies short block but those lobes looked like they had some really steep ramps and a good amount of duration. It should be beastly.

Back to the original post, I don't think it's an odd ocurance, but I had an 88 v30 CC with a 454. The odd one though, and one that contradicts the chart in post #2, is my 81 k30 CC that came factory with a 292 i6/465/205.

@shady what gears did the 292 truck come with?

I was surprised they even put one in a truck so big. Whoever had it before Eric had put a normal peanut port low horse 454 in it. I just assumed that it was stock till I ran the rpo codes
