K5 obsession?

Well, I've been hunting for a K5 due to it's superior wheeling capabilities. Up here there are 25 jeeps for every fullsize vehicle offroad. As such, most the trails have lots of tight turns that a longbed pickup has a lot of trouble navigating. There are also lots of hill peaks, or holes with sudden drops etc that a fullsize truck gets high centered on very easily. The fact that a K5 has far more weight on the rear axle is a major help for offroad traction as well.

I also very much like the fact that there is an enclosed place to store recovery, camping and safety gear. Even more than that is the relative ease of lifting these trucks, not to mention you can bolt 3/4 ton axles straight on without much modification required.

The fact that they are dead sexy is a big help, and I love having a diesel V8 to haul busted jeeps home with.

No kids for me. I'll go with the added passenger space and the ability to go topless. I just thought there was more to it than that. Like people thought they wheeled better. Maybe weight distribution? Just for the record, I'm not a Heep owner, and my questions where never about comparing them to a Blazer.

I guess its been a long time since I thought about this but one of the reasons I wanted a blazer is cause stock they are a great 4wd. A stock blazer can outwheel alot of different rigs. My bro in law with no lift and 36s and just a rear locker impresses the heck out of most people, blazers are just simply put a great 4wd and they only get better as we mod them

My first vehicle was an 81 K5 2wd that my uncle put in a 4.3 TBI / 700R4. Not great to wheel, but was a blast to haul friends around with the top off and head to the beach. When I sold it and bought a 95 S15 Jimmy, I didnt realize how much i would miss having a full size- Within 6 months I found my 84 K5 6.2L and it isnt going anywhere. There are plenty of great reasons listed and i agree with all of them, but for me, it is mostly because its what I like.

I had a friend of mine buy an 89 k-5 about 8 years ago. He showed up with it and when went for a ride, I was impressed. I was always a die hard truck guy but his k-5 made me change my mind. It wasn't because it was a superior offroad machine, even though it did go through some pretty gnarly terrain easily. It was just well built, easy to work on and had a straight front axle.

Truck = driver + 1 female passenger
K5 = driver + 4 female passengers

You decide which is better...

Best reason yet! But also why i bought a suburban. Hauls more ladies to the lake with the boat than the blazer did!

See but you fail to mention the 6+6 situation. Driver + 5 females.

Honestly I think the huge attraction to the k5 is as said a million times the wheelbase and removable top.

Personally I sorta wish I had one vrs my shortbed but the truck, drivetrain and body wise was a million times better of a deal.

To me another huge advantage of the k5 is being able to sprawl out and sleep in the back if you ditch the rear seat. Thats a huge plus to someone like me who is 6'6" and has to huddle up in the cab of his truck...

Ah, the female argument only goes so far... I once had 5 women in a regular cab pickup truck with me making 6 :D

I had 17 people in my Suburban on the ride home from the bars on New Years. . . . .

I love the 80s pickups but there just not enough room in them at times. The K5 is pretty much the ultimate hunting truck. I had an S10 Blazer and loved it but the IFS just wouldnt hold up to the abuse.

Then theres the ability to go topless which is just sweet. I will say for whatever reason though, my K5 is squirely as hell to drive...

Of course everything thing else I drive is a regular cab long box pickup.

having wheeled a long bed pickup I would say they can be surprisingly capapable, breakover angle can be solved with a big enough tire.

130" is a lot of length for tight trails. most will tell you 110" to 115" is an ideal wheel base for all around performance in which case a short bed pick or a k5 "with some simple mods" fit right in to that area.

A pickup will add some serious gear hauling cappabilities but a k5 will give you the option of hauling passengers or gear by removing the back seat..

One ton stuff will bolt right and make upgrading a whole lot cheaper and easier...

Mine was my first truck 10 years ago because it was cheap, I wanted a 4x4 I could put a few people in, and I liked the body style. I had to sell it right before a deployment so I could buy the wife something more reliable while I was gone. A couple years later I wanted something new and after thinking about how much I missed my Blazer, I bought it back from my uncle.

I really like the fact that I can store crap in it without worrying about it getting wet, I can sleep in it, haul several people, its cheap and easy to work on, has tons of mods that are easy to find, and they are getting a little more rare. Also running topless kicks ass.

I have been searching for years for the right setup for the offroading i like to do. The blazer has a great presence on and off the trails. Extra room for people and still great approach & departure angles. Cheap and easy to get parts and to work on.

Also I love being able to go down quad trails. It scares the crap out of the riders.

last time i went wheeling my shortbed worked all day...lol. i towed a ford over and thru many obstacles, towed a jeep out of a mud hole..i backed up to it in 2wd and gave er hell..lol oooops....then the transfer case blew in another jeep and towed it around when it couldnt make it...and the sound of a worked up 350 does the body good and b4 i forget the smell of race gas in the morning...lol .....
