Masked with fine line 3M auto body tape.
I think it 1/4 inch. Perfect fit.
you sand and prime or sand and paint only..did you clearcloat?

Scotch brighted then i used a wax & grease remover, then flat black. No clear. I'm using flat black on other parts of the truck. So I wanted it to match.
It's held up perfect for the 1,000 miles it gets a every year.

That stuff is more durable than normal rattle can stuff. I used a flat version and a clear coat on my center console and my door panels.
I have a set Nos Black and Black ring in original boxes.
They are buried in a closet. Only ones I’ve seen with the ring painted are the black ones.

I noticed on the pictures of my '73, that ring was painted black. It's about half faded off now.
I guess that settles it

I've always wondered that as well. GM somehow sprayed on the black paint without masking anything. Just like many other trim items on other GM products. Like the grille of a '66 Impala for example.
My '78 were silver from the factory, but I liked the black, so masked them off and painted them.

The reproduction ones I have in the garage match my 73-74 grille. Both argent. I thought black was 77-79?

Not much, but I taped them up and got the scotchbrite pad to them, then removed the tape. I will retape tomorrow and spray them:
