K5 vs. Bronco

My preferance is a GM product but Ford has offered some great stuff in the Bronco's as well .
C6's are very common
351's and real port fuel injection instead of a modified carb
injected the old in-line motor
high pinion front axles
boxed front section of frames ( pre 1980 )
Great looks !

The old Bronco's ( 1966 to 1977 ) were a hell of a lot of fun off road !
I can remember screaming like a little girl from so much fun in a 1971 Bronco with a stock 302 but I just can't seem to get that same excitment in my 305 powered 1985 Blazer. Before anyone screams that is not comparing the same trucks my point is that GM has delivered some crappy combinations too.
Both have good and bad points but they BOTH can be built to wheel extremely well - I just believe that a GM product left me with more options and easier to find parts , so that is what I wheel in.

Okay let's get it out there. I know that there has to be others that looked at both before they bought. I'm glad I have a K5 but I really can't knock the Bronco. It styling is really cool and parts are a plenty. Why I don't have one are independent suspension and somewhat weak motor despite it's size. Anyone else care to add?

I never looked at Broncos . I was born with Chevy Orange blood .

There may be a soft spot in my heart for old Mustangs , and 427 Cobras . But I am a Chevy guy .

Fords had too many engine familys , in too short of time anyway .

i think some fords like the lightning and early broncos look nice..all my friends and family that have owned a bronco have replaced the steering box and many other components at least once....i vote chevy...love my blazer...wouldnt trade it for anything....maybe one better than mine but thats it....what are your stands on the dodge ram charger?

i was looking to get a 79 bronco since they gots the coils compared to the k5's leafs. at first believe it or not i didnt like the 73-87 chevy body style...weird i know. but now im inlove with it and now thats the only body style truck i want, with more modern performance mods and such,

A couple things I haven't seen mentioned yet:

While GM was putting 1 ton trans/t-cases into their manual transmission Blazers, Ford was putting in T-5 and Borg Warner t-cases (total garbage). The AOD is terrible as well.

Seems to me that most Broncos are 302's and most Blazers are 350 (makes it tougher to find one you want with the bigger motor)

Ford used a 1-ton rated 4-speed for many years and they offered a 5-spd before GM did although it wasn't that tuff. The granny 4-spd's were still offered in the Bronco's even after the 5-spd's came out.

The first five years of the TH700R4 wasn't the greatest until 87 when some upgrades made it worthy.
GM 350's in Blazers were not common at all durring the mid eighties and there were a few years they were not offered at all. TBI brought back the common 350 in Blazers.

I do not mean to sound like I am challenging you but I thought I would point out some similarity's.

That's cool. To clarify, every manual transmission Blazer had either an SM420 or SM465. Most manual transmission Broncos are the 5 speed T5.

Don't forget about the 3-spd's and tha goofy 4-spd O.D. tranny used in the early eighties .

I am with Ya though on the manual tranny thing - we are most likely to find a bullet proof 465 in our Blazers from 1969 to 1991 and there were only select years that the Bronco's came with the good stuff. It's nice to have a tranny in a Blazer that GM used in medium duty trucks .

It's a shame that Ford didn't use those cast-iron 4-speed Toploaders more. Those things are sturdy!

im a gm guy, every ford i have owned has been a money pit but on the bronco k5 issue...... ever seen a 80's bronco with the top off? it looks retarded and whats with the big stupid lip under the top? just my oppinion but broncos top design was retarded i dont like the swept back of the cab and also it seams like function and form was over looked . like shifters seam to have been forgotten then just threw in the best way they could after the fact i have owned alot of fords and even more GM's and have finaly gotten to the point where i dont ever want another ford
my 85 bronco was a super money pit

What a surprise; almost everyone on CK5 (“Home of the 1969-91 Blazer/Jimmy including GM Trucks and Suburbans.”) prefer Chevys and Blazers in particular over Fords and Broncos. I’m shocked! I’m sure that everyone over on the Ford sites thinks you are all correct. Having owned dozens of both Broncos and Blazers I can say that I like them both about the same in stock form, each having some advantages over the other. When modified you can end up with whatever you like and be happy. Ford production based trucks dominate in the desert, Chevy isn’t even close. Mud, rock and “Wheeling” Chevy edges out Ford. I love my Blazers! I loved my Broncos. I’m looking forward to someday finishing my Blazer Prerunner with Ford Twin-Traction Beam front end.

Exactly, you can make them perform however want (can afford) so pick the one you think looks the best.

Never desired to own a Ford. I have only owned Chevy. If I bought a Ford it just wouldn't feel right. I'd feel like I was cheating on my K5.
