K5's score 1000+ on the ramp (pics)

So you figure the rear 56's have as much flex as the front 52's? Also do you happen to have any close up pics of the suspension/shock set-up?

Thnx

Well, since you ask, i'll post some pics up tomorrow. As for 56's vs the 52's... I got a set of 1 ton 56's from a CUCV and I pulled out every other leaf.

Re: K5\'s score 1000+ on the ramp (pics)

well, I know they came on the older suburbans and the 1 ton trucks... other than that, i'm not real sure. My pack had 9 leaves when I pulled it from the CUCV, but like i said, i pulled every other leaf. Nonesuch got his out of a suburban and it is a 5 leaf pack.

Re: K5\'s score 1000+ on the ramp (pics)

You can get 56" springs out of many 5/8 ton (heavy half) and up Chevy trucks or 1/2 ton and up suburbans (pre `91 model years). All you need to do is take a tape measure and go to the junkyard. I got my 56's for $30 bucks and my front springs were free (stock rear blazer springs). The homebrew rear shackle flip cost me $5 bux at the bone yard. Add another $50 for hardware and consumables and you are good to go. Remember, the 56" rear springs are capable of pushing your rear axle back 4" and it may take lots of /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif to get 39"+ meats to fit.

Re: K5\'s score 1000+ on the ramp (pics)

Thnx for the pics. I really like your rear shock set-up. How is it at higher speeds?

If mounted to the stock centerpin location it moves your axle back the said 4 inches? So not only will I get mad flex with the swaps but I would also be able to get my extra 6" of wheelbase that I wanted as well /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Do you think this set-up requires the use of an antiwrap system? Are the springs not as soft as say the 63's or 57's out there? Sorry I can't remember if its been asked yet and I don't see any in your pics.

I already have the springs and shackle hangers from my parts truck that my 3/4ton axles came from. The only thing stopping me from doing this swap is the lack of crossover steering. And the only thing stopping me from crossover is a d60 in place of the d44 /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Looks like it will still be a little while b4 I get to do it even with all the parts laying around.

At least it will be well researched by that time /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Thnx for taking the time to answer all my questions, I truly appreciate it /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Just noticed something as well. Did rear upper shock mount bend? Was it designed with a bend? or is it an illusion? /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Well, i never use that truck at high speeds, so I couldn't really tell you... i'm sure it fine though. Matt from West Texas Off Road (great guy!!!) says he had my truck up to 60 last week and he had no problems.

you run the 56's backwards. long side to the front. That puts the center pin 30 from the front and 26 from the rear. I've got my rear axle pushed back 4 and the front pushed forward 2. Prescott, the blue and white one above has a zero rate up front for another 1 1/2 inches forward. Jeremy, the orange one, has his rear axle back 4 and the front axle forward 5 since he's running the 56's up front and the 61's in the rear.

The 57's are thinner leaves. Matt (Dwarf) has the 57's on his springer setup in the rear, but he has bent them twice already and the first time was about 20 minutes after we got them installed! the 63's (on Jeremy's they actually measured at 61) are thicker leaves like the 56's so i guess they could work really well, i'm not sure why they don't seem to do as well on Jeremy's rear end, although, i think he may have an extra leaf or two in them. as for antiwrap, it is certainly an issue... for now, i plan to clamp the second spring to the main leaf and see how that does. I'll probably leave it that way for the rest of the summer... maybe do some links or something over the winter.

actually, i ripped that off from txbluethunder when he tubed his whole truck out. He had bent it while it was on his truck when a shock mount ripped off the axle and the shock got pinned between the pumpkin and the angle iron. the bend is there, but not enough to bother me. it works just fine.

I guess their OK...just kidding.

I had a blast, the Burb will partake next time. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Re: K5\'s score 1000+ on the ramp (pics)

On mine with the 56's up front I only have 3" of room between my spring plates and bump stops. to keep the top loader of the rockwells out of the crossmember so that realy limts the front travel. And at full stuff those damn big tires are all up in the fire wall and fenders even with that much removed from the fender and the front has been narrowed 12" out of the grill.

And the square drive shafts are made out of 2x2x3/16 and 2-1/2x 2-1/2x 1/4 and you have to grind the 2x2 for the seam. I grind 180' of the seam that is in the 2x2. /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif

I was just wandering about the shackle angle is there a advantage to having the shackle so far behind center /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif does that give you more droop It was my understanding that the shackle should be only slighly behind center so you have the best of booth the compression and droop /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
is that the secret to it flexin so dam sweeet man does you rig flex /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

yes, having the shackle angled back a bit will allow for more flex. It will also make the spring act softer. But I don't plan my shackle angles... only plan for where the shackle will be when the spring is flat (during stuff).

What I did in the rear is I measured 57 inches (one inch longer than my spring when flat) from the front hanger to the shackle eye when it is laid back flat. So means that when my spring is flat, the shackle isn't and therefore the shackle can never get inverted.

Up front I didn't want the spring eye to ever hit the frame so I measured, from the front spring hanger, 52 inches back and took into account the diameter of the spring eye to determine how long to make the shackles after moving the shackle point forward in the frame. For me this measurement was 7 1/4 inches.

Planning for the flat spring shackle placement, rather than resting angle, allows you to take advantage of the full shackle travel. As for the angle of my shackles at rest, my springs are only slight arched at rest so the shackles lay back a bit. If you have lift springs (or some with more arch than stock) the shackle won't be a laid back as mine.

I've actually had some guys say my shackle is laid back too far... /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif ... hey, whatever floats your boat, but I was going for max flex when planning my setup. /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: K5\'s score 1000+ on the ramp (pics)

I can see in some of the other pics how, the increass in the shackle angle really helps in the droop because the shackle never comes in a straight line with the spring therefore not restricting the amount of droop /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif
now i'm going to have to redo my setup /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif
