I have my 89 v3500 454.... chevy also had 6.2s for that year...
because the trucks had diesels can a cummins be installed instead of the 454 and still be smog legal?
I HATE KALIFORNIA

I don't think so, since GM never offered a Cummins motor in any of their products.
I could be wrong, though...

Thats definetly an engine change. I asked my teacher baout this too a few weeks ago because I want to put a Duramax in my '78. Theres so many rules, I get all confused with them. I belive you have to have all the emissions equipment the dodge had, then go to the referee and get a BAR label, saying it has a engine change to a diesel conversion. Ill double check for you.

Thanks greg... Im thinking of a 12v 1991-1993 version... not much in the way of smog or electronics

Hey Cam
We already did the research.
Same year or newer is fine.
It also has to be offered in that year for the the same GVWR truck.
My friend wants a cummins in his 96 1ton. so it was OK.
Although some referees didn't wnat to let him He was in Bakersfield.
The one in Sac is fine with it.

Thanks Issaam,....
what a drag California is...we have to "shop" and beg BAR inspectors/referees to know their job and do it correctly

Im going to pay a visit to the referee here to be sure... but Im headed in the right direction..
one step at a time... now its time to look for the adapter from a P30 van,,,3.9 cummins fits the 5.9 ...as I understand

WHy not? If its legit, the ref shouldnt not let him.

Youll have to do the swap, with EVERYTING from the cummins. Then go to a referee and hell fill out a paper, and itll go to DMV saying your no longer in the smog check program! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif Have fun! /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

I still want the referee here that I am going to deal with tell me what he wants... I dont want any surprises... government has a way of biting citizens in the ass....
I know... I was the government....
Kalifornia.... I used to love it here

I dont see why there will be any problems.

I used to hate the smog laws too, but things seem to be not as big a deal to me once you have your smog license!

we all appreciate you being generous with your inspection interpretation...
as I understand it OBD3 and more will take any leeway away from the tester eventually.... I heard cameras will record the vin and test... big brother stuff
and why would you risk a 30 dollar smog for a bud when they would prosecute you... dmv nazis love to burn smog guys... I used to work with them and hear the tales of them putting "bad" smog guys away...
I think the smog thing is a joke here,,, sell credits one place so we can pollute another...
vehicle smog laws should only be concerend with what comes out the tailpipe,,, and if thats in parameters then what equipment is on the truck shouldnt matter... its such a racket... pay big bucks for carb exemptions etc... no wonder companies leave here in droves
anyway if I can get away with the diesel conversion without untold hassle Ill probably do it....

I wasnt talking about clean piping cars. If a car cant pass, I can fix it so it does, but it seems that most of the time tailpipe emissions arent the problem, its the visual. I know the risks of smogging illegally, it is CRAZY. If you get caught, your screwed. When I got my BAR newsletter it was ridiclous how many shops had their licenses revoked, there was at least 3 pages. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

Oh whered you get a $30 somg? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My grandpa used to be the big boss for nother cali. CARB, his office was in San Fran. He got my mom a job driving arount and busting illeagal smog shops, She has some pretty cool storys!! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

What smog did the diesels have? I just purchased a 86 diesel burb and I can't see anything that looks smog related. Plus diesels are smog exempt so the DMV shouldn't care if it's a non-factory diesel. Seems to me, you go get the smog ref to verify it's a diesel and your exempt, home free.

Yes, I posted above what needs to be done.

Re: Kalifornia diesel conversion rules? which adapter?

Im being told that there are two ways to do our trucks...
a) get all the adapter stuff from p30 van with a 3.9 cummins/th400... including the chevy/dodge starter...
apparently this setup, with the 5.9, "tilts" the motor to one side.... doesnt sound like a good thing
or
b) find a gen 1 dodge donor with a 727/205 pass drop and take the whole thing... dodge starter fits "better" ( a cearance issue I guess)... no adapter necessary... its all dodge

anyone done either ??? (12v mechanical...)
cam

Well I spent 10 minutes today talking to CARB..... they were actually pleasant to speak to and they said...

1) you can install any same or later year diesel you like ... it must have it smog equipment installed... in the case of the mechanical cummins that isnt much... probably and evap on the tank
2) schedule a trip to a refereee who confirms the above and then you get to change it to diesel at DMV...

looking better all the time...
now...
where can I get that cummins at a reasonable price....!!!
