Thought I might let you guys know being as that its cold. They have a set of 8 on sale for 69 bucks right now.

It seems the quick heats work better with the stock controller which I have and intend to retain.

Thats why I went with those. Soon to come a review of how they work.

They work great but burn out faster than the stock style GP's.

Yah I read that too. I am willing to take the risk. They heat up fast and help the truck start great which means longer life out of my starter and my batteries.

The guys at kennedy did mention that they will last longer with the stock controller.

Plus a one year warrenty.

Everything I read about the 60gs say they work great just not the best idea to use the stock controller.

My wife drives the rig to work sometimes ( and will more often now I am fixing the 4wd) sometimes has to go to the jail on short notice cause a client just got booked in or something like that the last thing on her mind is to turn off the glow plugs. Hence the reason for keeping the stock controller.

Plus we have stupid temp swings here. Low for the day can be mid day not dead of night, and she can't plug in at work. Which I am hoping will make life on my starter and batteries easier.

Anyway we shall see. I will keep my build thread updated with how I like them and will let everyone know as soon as I know I have a failure

what are these glow plug things of which you speak??? :haha:

Right Eric...I don't know a dam thing about diesels and here I'm making fun of you for having a glow plug system...:dunno:

Right now I hate glow plugs. Its just simply not gonna start. I basically had 3 working and I think they gave up the ghost today.

Hopefully the kennedys will get here quick.

I am excited to see Bart with that cummins in it, will be highly jealous

me too Eric...I have the Dodge pretty well stripped now...most of the good stuff is in the shop awaiting some attention.

You'll like the QH's...

I got two years on mine before I started losing em one at a time. I then bought another set from Dremu and used his to replace mine as they burned out. Pretty sure I still have two or three of Dremu's in a drawer here.

Just ordered a set for myself. See how it starts once it comes back from the paint shop and get them in. All stock controller also. Is it OK to use a push button with these plugs to extend the glow time or is it not needed because these work so well?

YOU are the "timer" with a push button glow plug activation switch,so I guess you could use "quick"glow plugs with one, only trouble is you dont know how long is too long, and if one swells up,it'll be a pain to get out later..you would have to experiment and see how many seconds it takes to get it to fire up,and only leave them on the least amount of time..

I wish 60G's were cheaper,I could use a set between my two trucks,I know at least 2 or 3 on each truck are probably dead ones..its a months insurance payment to buy a set of 8 now,if not more!..I have some Autolites but I had one break before and get crunched up in the cylinder,I dont trust them with a manual switch now..one diesel tech told me to use all 8 of the same plugs, otherwise one thats an oddball might draw all the amps, having less resistance ,and burn up--not sure if I beleive that or not, might be true..

Quick Heats do not swell when they burn out. I ran a set on a manual switch and had to replace 2 or 3 of them within about 18 months.

Thats good to know,I wasn't sure if they would swell up like 9G Ac's did..

The 60G's I put in my truck when I first got it were so badly rotted 2 years later I was lucky I could get them out,the hex was whittled away to nubs by salt spray...several of then failed too..but the guy at Autozone who sold them to me handed me 4 new ones and said "see you later--have a nice day!:.:D

Now those look about the same as the first set did..been about 3 years now..some might not be working by now too,one or two had the tab for the wire connector snap off,I have roach clips holding the wires on them now, they still work,so I hate to toss them yet..

I sent an email to John Kennedy about his glow plugs and the stock controller. He mentioned an article about a resistor added to the stock controller wiring being on the Diesel page. I cannot find that article. Is there anyone here who might have a link or who could tell me how to do what John said to do. I have a set of his plugs on the way and want to follow his suggestions.

Thanks for the quick reply.

From your thread: Well got a lil bit done today...I wired up a couple of 10-ohm resistors to assist the glow plug warm up time (I have some Bosch DuraTerms that self regulate)...so 2, 1w 10ohm wired in parallel gave me about 5 more seconds of glow time. I wired it up with some connectors so now I can build a couple different "setups" and use them during different seasons, or just remove all-together and go back to the factory configuration. In the end, I'd like to wire up a smart black-box, where I can just select the glow time via a control panel...but this works for now :)

Couple questions:

1. You say installed the resistors in parallel not series correct?
2. You cut the yellow wire from the temp switch which is normally closed when cold and put the resistors in-line in the yellow wire?
3. Where do I pick up those resistors?

Yes, parallel on the yellow to increase the time. Picked them up at radio shack...
I'll have to find my notes, I think I got the info off thedieselplace forums...

I did my resistor set up like you said and installed it in my truck down at the paint shop while it waits in line. Sure enough when timing it off my watch it gave me exactly an additional 5 seconds of glow time.
The truck should be in the booth today. My Kennedy glow plugs came today. If it's not in the booth, I'll put those in today as I need to bring him a couple parts I've got in my garage.

Went to the body shop tonight and the truck isn't going into the booth until Thursday so I was able to install my new Kennedy Quick Heats. When I removed the old ones I found 6 Autolites and 2 Delcos. The Delcos were #1 and #3. Those were the ones right under the A/C bracket that I guess can be a pain to change. Looked pretty carboned up like they hadn't been working. They were all easy to remove especially with no fenders on the truck and none were swollen. All the electrical plugs were pretty corroded from the old glow plug blades rusting. I disassembled each plug, cleaned them, and slightly bent the sides down so they would be tight on the new plug blades. I installed the new GP's and put all the wires back on. Now the test. With the resistor set up in the glow light stays on longer but I noticed it stayed on a lot longer with the new plugs then it did yesterday with the old plugs w/bad connections. When the light went out I barely touched the starter and it fired right up! Not a single puff or cloud of smoke at all out of the tailpipe and almost not even any smell. Success!:woot:
