About 5 years ago I use to see several in the junk yards. Even a 72 k5 was found in the yard with lots of good parts back then but that was rare. Now I rarely see any of the 73-91 k5s. There are not as many ck trucks also. Maybe we are pass the golden era of this trucks getting parted out.

There may be a shortage of square bodies in the junk yards, but the demand for their parts is not that high. 99% of the population are not smart enough or have the space to rebuild any kind vehicle let alone a square body GM truck. The "pie hole" face stuffing masses want a complete running truck and not a fender. The easiest square body truck to sell is one that somebody with more money than brains wants.

They have been scarce around here for the better part of the past 10-15 years in salvage yards, most got crushed between 2007 and 2012..you rarely see one now that hasn't already been stripped clean before it gets sent to the salvage yard, the few you do see "intact" look to have sat out to the weather with the hood open,no air filter, and both doors open, with mice and wasps living it it..nothing worth taking for parts really ..

There isn't many on craigslist or other online want ads either that are priced "reasonably" and are worth fixing up--there are still many nice ones that were restored or babied around.but you'll need 8 grand or more to drive one home..

Its a good thing a lot of aftermarket parts are still available for square bodies..mostly online though, and you'll have to order them and wait for them to arrive..most parts stores here no longer keep much in stock either, everything is a "special order" and a day or two wait usually..

I know a bunch got sent to the crusher or shredder when metal scrap prices were really high many years ago. In the last town I lived in there was a small junkyard that was filled with square bodies for years. Stopped by one Saturday and the place was almost bare as they had sent most of the stuff out for scrap. Also keep in mind that square bodies are simply getting old and not many people are actually trying to keep them running for daily drivers anymore.

The "newest" square body trucks were 1991 Suburban ,Blazers and 1 tons, they are 27 years old now.....a 1973 is now 45 years old..:yikes:...now I feel REAL old!..:(

I've never seen a 1st Gen Blazer in the local yards and have only seen one 67-72 pickup. I gutted it for everything I thought I could use. That was 10+ years ago...

I just went on Sunday....barely anything!! Maybe two old beat up 75 pickups, but that's it. Nothing.

I'd say the past 5 years I haven't been able to see much out there. :(

The yard I go to most often has had more 67-72 GM's than square bodies lately, but all were shells, completely boned out..

I don't recall ever seeing a K5 of that vintage (first gen) in a salvage yard even back in the 80's..people hung onto them forever or stashed them "out back" in their yards rather than sell them to salvage yards, many got parted out "privately"...used to see lots of '73-87 K5's 15 or so years ago in salvage yards,Burb's and pickups galore too..that period some years back when scrap went up to $250 a ton or more made all of the old iron vanish rapidly..that cash for clunkers took a lot of trucks off the used market too..

Most yards here dont keep much if it is over 10 years old..20 at the most, and only "popular" cars that there are still many of on the roads..

One trip to my favorite salvage yard about 10 years ago revealed a new arrival--a 1964 GMC panel truck--3/4 ton 4x4...it was rough, looked like someone started sanding it down, slapped on some bondo over rot patches around the rear wheel arches and quarters, and abandoned it--was surface rusted all over and had some rot on the door bottoms and the floors had a few patches, but nothing extensively rotted ..

I was able to read lettering on one side of the truck--it was a former fire truck from some town in RI,I couldn't make it out,I think it was Tiverton...it had those big ugly diamond plate bumpers and looked like it had a winch on both ends previously..

The inside was FULL of parts,at least 3 small blocks ,heads, drive shafts, another transfer case (Rockwell),and SM 420 tranny, and there was only front seats but they were only springs with no padding left really..it also had the earlier "eyebrow" hood...
I opened the hood and saw a 283 with a Edelbrock carb, all white as a ghost..had a 4 speed too!..was still solid where they always rot at the hood hinges too..

You could tell the truck was real nice at one time, most fire trucks get pampered and are parked indoors--someone must have got it at a town auction and left it out to the weather for 15+ years..:(

I about cried seeing that thing sitting there--I asked the guy at the office if it was for sale,he hesitated and said "why--what do you need"?--I said I was interested in the whole truck, and wondered if it was titled--he said "Um--we're not sure what were going to do with that yet--it really shouldn't have been put back there in the pick & pull area,we had to move it out of the parking lot to manuver a 18 wheeled flatbed the other day"...
"Also I know we don't have the title, and most likely you wont be able to get one for it"...If we were to sell it as a whole, parts and all--we'd want like 4 grand for it"..

Two weeks later I went back there and saw a Mazda sitting on the roof of the panel truck...:(...the guy at the office said "Someone put a down payment on it the other day--sold it for $3500,he didn't care about no title..he agreed to pay 4 grand ,until my stupid loader driver put that Mazda on top of it so someone could get the tires off it!..the guy was livid, but still wanted it,for less money"..

This weekend... EVERYTHING was like 1992 and up... However, there was (shoulda taken a pic)... 1982 c10 (I nabbed hydro clutch reservoir and hood release cable), and 1 k5 blazer with 3" BL.. frame was all rusty...

I was thinking about this recently. I drove a 64 C10 in high school. That will be the equivalent of my son driving my 89 crew cab when he gets his license in 2 years.

Seems like the gap isn't equivalent. I think because the 64 had no power assist anything and all drum brakes where the 89 has power everything.

When we bought the 73 C10 he's going to drive I was thinking it's interesting the developments between my 66 and that 73. The 73 has power steering, power brakes with front discs, and factory AC. Plus the automatic was becoming more prevalent. The standard features really changed in 7 years.

from what I recall... around 2006 I was in the yard and noticed a ton of square bodies... then in about 2012, I went back for something and noticed not one. I asked the guy, what happened to all the trucks? He said that price of steel has skyrocketed due to china Importing in steel.... he said that while he could hold on to the trucks for people like me to buy a $10-$50 part but instead he was getting (I forget the exact but )... something like $600-%800 for a square body due to them being all metal.

There's a lack of all 27 year old vehicles in junk yards.

there is a 60's impala 4 door, a Packard and something else old. a rusting and trans am as well.. they wont sell the full car. I told them.. I'm like.. well I need a frame (which they sell)... for an impala. Well its a u-pull it. I said... I have to take everything off the frame so I can take the frame. so how much for all the parts that I take off of it.. including the frame.. LOL.. he looked at me with that "Look"....

Yeah, our square bodies weight between 5000 and 7000 lbs depending on tonnage and what engine it had..

Many of the yards here squashed everything heavy during that period..there was a lot of semi trucks in junkyards here that sat forever, until the prices went over $250 a ton, then they finally started cutting them up...a shame too, many were still very restoreable and they dont rot like passenger cars and trucks really--old Diamond Rio's and REO's,Macks,Brockways,etc--many still ran and drove or would again with minimal work..the yards looked so empty without the familiar "landmark" vehicles that never moved ,it was pretty disturbing actually..

Hell, there aren't even hardly any Astros in yards and they made those up to 2007? or something?

(Was looking for some 5X5 aluminum wheels a few weeks ago.....)

I'm going to the yard hopefully this weekend...will let you know what I see. Wasnt much last time I went. Parts yards stock what sells...and a 5, 10 or 15 year old truck bed is a better investment for limited part yard space than a 40 year old truck....for most yards....thank God there are some who still value them

I wonder if this place sold yet.....

Owner has the same last name as me--maybe we're related ?...I feel the same way as he does about old vehicles--and the regrets of realizing you'll never live long enough to restore most of them..If I ever hit the lottery...:deal:..I'd buy the place and all the cars..what a retirement investment...

Because there is no good equivalent for them new. So people are hanging on to them as long as possible now. My dad has a 98 (owned since new) every now and then, he has somebody come up to him trying to buy it but he won't sell. He rode with me to the Chevy dealer the other day while I was getting some warranty work. Salesman came up to him and gave his pitch. My dad said, offer me a brand new Astro van and I'll buy it today.
