I got some wood today, gonna build a workbench soon. What do you guys have/use?

Right now I have two solid-core doors for the top. I'm gonna cut them to 26" wide and use the rest for shelving. I have some leftover weather treated structural 4x4 posts to use for the front legs... a 2x4 will run along the wall to support the back of the table top while a 2x6 will link the 4x4s together in the front. Toss in some 2x4s to box things in / triangulate and a sheet of steel for the top and I oughta be set. 13'+ of work space will be niiiiiice!

I'll add a nice storage shelf below the bench too. I was going to make the thing tall enough that a standard roll-away would fit under it... but I didn't want a work surface that was 44-ish inches tall. lol!

anyway, whatchu guys have in your man-space?

the floor. or the washing machine if the truck is in the garage :(

I want a 2 car garage!
 
lol! I hear ya mang... I've been working on my K5 since 1997 or so... and have yet to work on it inside.... until this winter that is! :grin:

I got three , but one has been holding a double oven and a cooktop for over a year :(

Think I got some pics from before then but they are small , and my beer fridge now resides where the K5 seat is . All here when I moved in .

nice! how deep are those? I basically looked at my kitchen counters (26") and decided 28" wouldn't be a bad idea. I don't wanna do more, because with the truggy sitting right in the middle, you only have so much room to maneauver in there as it is!

I would deff use some thick metal for the top. at first i thought this might be a post your pics lol b/c right now at work i got a 263 tcase all apart b/c of a siezed out put bearing (freaking warranty job pays crappy), 10 bolt carrier with a lockright and 4.88 ring gear on it, bunch of axle seals, bearings, races for GM IFS trucks, couple r&ps for GM IFS trucks, and wow im so gonna have to clean all the crap off tomorrow now that im thinkin about it.
 
Here's one my Dad & I built this spring in my basement. Light duty for sure though...

I built a 16' long heavy duty work bench in my shop.

It's 42" tall, 18" deep, 16 feet long, and has two levels.

I built it out of 4x4's, 2x4's, and 2x10's. I used a glaze type epoxy and coated the surface of the bench to provide a smooth surface resistant to oils and fuel that I can take a rag and just wipe clean.

dude, I like that little Craftsman roller toolbox... how tall is your workbench? judging by the ceiling height... the work surface looks pretty tall... :thinking:

Thats not the celing, its a loft. The top of the benches are about 40" from the floor, which seems perfect to me at 6' 1".
 
cool. That tool box fits under there very nicely... might have to troll craigslist for one of them! :thumb:

I dont have wood benches only steel, I can post pics of those, or are you looking for wood benches??

I broke the camera so no pictures right now. A friend got me plain heavy solid wood door from a building being demoed that I used for the top wrapped it in 2x6 around the top and 1/2 way down the legs, just sides and back so I can keep the compressor,trans jack and shop vac under it. Used 6x6 for the legs, wanted this thing to be solid and not move around. Used the door knob hole in the back to run cords through. Assembled it all with 1/2" lag bolts. Dont think I spent $100 on it.
 
The one in the pics is 8" log legs with rough cut doug fir 2x8s. The top is 2x12 that I salvaged. The air compressor JUST fits underneath.

Here's a few pics of my bench. 48" x 64"
1 1/2" plate top, with 2" reciever welded under each corner for vices, etc...
