Ok so I am really wanting to up grade my axles. I have a 44 front and a 12 bolt rear now. They are locked and running 4.56s.

I want a set of 1 tons.

So here are my questions... Where can I find them? So far Craigslist is weak. I have been looking for old trucks whole etc.

On a stock carrier what gear ratios can I expect? At what gear splits do I have to worry about changing ring and pinon sizes? I am certain a 5.38 will be a different setup that a 3.83.

Also what would you pay for a bone dry stock set that is complete?

What about built in good shape?

I have about 2500 for the project. Is it reasonable?

If you have a good all inclusive site or write up, I would love to read and learn. Thanks a bunch...

Unless you're looking at some place like Boyce equipment for some nice remans, it's all about being in the right place at the right time. I found a set with 10k miles out of a military cucv with 4.56's and a detroit in the rear for $1100. A little paint and a disc swap for the rear and they'll be a saweet addition to my K5. That being said, I've seen guys trying to get over 2k for a set that needed gone through, so it's really about getting lucky. Check around junkyards in your area too, sometimes you'll be suprised.

You'll find some:thumb:

I gotta second this. I drove by a M1008 that was sitting in a yard for almost a year. Finally stopped after I blew up a 12bolt. Bought the whole truck for $1200 and by the time I parted it, scrapped, and sold my half ton stuff, I had $200 to go towards new tires.:waytogo:

You should expect to pay $1000-$1400 for CUCV sets depending on mileage and whether the front has a posi or not.

Regular take outs that need to be gone through go from $500 all the way to $1200. Personally I wouldnt pay more than $800.

If you want to stick to 4.56s then the CUCV rears are well worth the headache and expense of regearing.

As said you gotta wait for your deal. Skim over CL every other day. I know some junkyards that have reasonable prices are a good place but if wheeling is popular in your area chances are the 60 fronts will be gone. I have an expensive junkyard here. Its $500 for any rear whether its a 60 front or a 14b so in the given scenario of a 60 thats not that bad.

I have a front dual wheel dana 60 for $750. Woulds need to either machine the hubs or buy single wheek hubs.

skip the m-series posi front. its a weak light duty trac lok not realy worth it unless its a smokin deal.

going 1 ton is $$$ and big time commitment. but lot less to fear breaking when having fun. :D

14BFF should be easy - you can find those anywhere cheap if you look hard enough.

For a Dana 60 front, watch ads on the east coast and figure out a way to transport them.

I got two GM D60 fronts, one in Maryland and one in Pennsylvania, each for $300. I found one on Pirate and the other in a junkyard. I was living in the DC area temporarily at the time, so transport wasn't an issue.

Option B would be to find an old farm or gov't truck that has an owner that doesn't know or care about offroad value, but that's been tough for a while now.

Thats one I am going to look at tomorrow. Unfortunately it wounds like the rear has sold menaing I am going to buy one for 100 and build.

Unless I find one cheaper. A guy in Ft Collins want 3000 for a front and rear rebuilt, but open...

I have a 14 bolt with 4.56 gears for a $100. I will have to see...

PS lets go wheeling I am trying to find wheeling partners here... I have the big green 72 blazer and a red cj 7.

I picked up my 1982 K30 for $2,000 and I thought I overpaid. It was a 454/SM465/NP205/Dana60/14bff/3.73's/8"lift

i bought two 87 k30s small block though, for under a grand each. just gotta find the guy who doesnt know or care what hes got, or NEEDS cash.

also ive found front axles when looking for a rear. craigslist search for
dayna, warren, dully, axels, 4+4 for some reason, chevy ton, gmc ton, granny, crap like that.

east coast is a good place to look but shipping on over a half ton of steel would bring your final cost way up. here in ct i found a nice running k5 with tons, 9" lift and 40" iroks for 2300. keep ya eyes peeled. its all about stayin on it and looking often.
