Little Input + 12V Cummins Swap

It is a D60.

A recess might work, but if it has a propensisty to shift already, tht would probably just add another piece that could fail.

Afternoon fellas, hope everybody is well... Just a small update.. The truck is driving real good since we last spoke.. I havent got around to any steering mods yet just because I don't really want to spend $$$ on it right now but I did buy a dropped pitman arm from Stephen at ORD after we talked about my lift and determined that the std short drop should work out;this will force me to get my ars in gear and do this steering project asap, I don't like lookin at uninstalled parts... I ordered some springs last week and I'm waiting for them to clear customs.. I grabbed some shackles, delrin bushings, and greasable bolts from him as well. My front spring plates are making me nervious (U-ing a little) so I ordered a set of spring plates from WFO concepts(heavy bastards) so those, new 3.5" springs and all the other stuff will go in next weekend..

Good to see you back Larry. I was beginning to wonder if you had succumbed to one the machete-weilding maniacs on the island. I'm looking forward to seeing pics of all the new parts installed.

Thanks Andy, I've been lurking and posting to my "crews around the country" over in the classifieds; but its good to get some parts to play with; I was starting to go through withdrawls from not wrenching... I've been concentrating heavly on buying a bike for my CR500 supermoto project so the truck has just been the reliable daily driver lately.. I'll post pics when I get-er together..

CR500 supermoto? I guess you can get a tag for anything over there. Should be a beast. You'll have to post about that in one of the other forums on here. I think they have one for motorcycles and such.

Why not flip your rear springs around and slide your axle back a couple inches.
That would def be the thing to do, when I did the rear I didn't have the $$$ for the flip...From some angles you notice the slight fwd nature of the rear axle more than others; trust me if it looked like total junk I'd have made a move already... Next evolution would be flip, different springs rear, b52 the front and some 40's or 42's. I've got a ranch hand winch bumper from a dodge someone gave me and I need to do disks in the rear... I'm just waitin on some more inspiration.. I've got motorcycle fever right now and have been looking at bikes, havent ridden in two years since I've been down here...

that sounds like a good start to a snowball!

Good afternoon, I'd like a little advise on a couple issues. 1st, I can get a set of new 39" boggers from my buddie on island for 800 bucks, but their 15"... You think I should **** around w buying rims and grinding calipers or trade um for 16.5" Groundhawgs? I dont really care about tire life, wear, that kind of junk, I just wonder if it's a total PITA or not too bad.. Anybody got some ground calipers I can buy, I'd like to be able to swap over in an afternoon cause it's my dd...Kind of a stupid question but is there any 15" rim that will fit over the calipers or is it just dimentionally impossible? I'm workin on gettin a high steer set up, I've got the box and the pitman arm already. Can anyone suggest a budget hydro assist? My mind is all over the place on this truck, skys the limmit. I was thinkin about bushwacker cut outs for some extra clearence w/out lifting more. I never really liked um but I think there allright if the tire sticks outside um a little. I was thinkin about 52in the front but I'm wondering if the truck will b too soft in the front for a dd at that point, no sway bar right now.. i would like t get that front axle a little further fwd to clear some tires.. Anybody whos subd to this thread got any suggestions? Remember it's my dd so the trucks gotta be driveable, streetable I mean... Thanks, have a good weekend!

Oh, and can anybody post some crewcabs w bushwacker cutouts?

As for the tires, I say go with the Ground Hawgs, you can put them on your H1's Boggers are way to soft if you run alot of pavement. that and 15" wheels are a major pain in the ASS

There are a couple threads on doing Hydro Assist on the cheap I suggest buying the Cap from JKW off road or DIY4x and then drilling and tapping the other hole yourself its pretty easy. then just order a cheap 8" ram and make your own lines from Aeroquip hose

Good to know, thanks. I guess I'll just buy the bogger and trade or sell um since their a good deal.. I read Bullivista's thread on Pirate about hydro, pretty informative..

I was wondering if you were still around Bad Larry. Did you do any work on the truck over the summer?

Did you do any work on the truck over the summer?

Morning, yeah I'm still kickin... I haven't done anything to speak of, I pulled a steering shaft outta a cherokee last week at the junk yard. I cant remember what I posted on here but I added a set of ORD greasable shackles and new springs w a few extra leefs in the front a while ago.. BUT.. now I'm really on a charge to complete the front end the right way w a new tapped box/hydro assits and crossover. My buddy has this set of 39.5 boggers that are basically new w like a few hundred street miles that I can get for $800 but like I said their 15s... I guess I'm just gunna sell um or trade um for some 40" Groundhawgs (I always liked that tire).. I was thinking about 52ing the front but prob just gunna buy 6" springs w my zero rates and trim off the fang; I think that should b enough room for um.. Shackle flip the rear w my second set of zero rates and leefs if need be... I may need to buy a set of gears at least for the rear but I dunno yet, 5.13s or 5.38s... Id like to see a crew w 40s on it to get an idea of what mine would look like..

I can't think of anyone that has a crew on 40s but you might try looking through the "What would my truck look like with XX tires on XX lift" thread. Actually come to think of it there was a guy who shoehorned some 40s on a blue crew cab with little or no lift. Was it Sweet K30? Anyway he didn't keep them on there long I don't think.

As far as the XJ shaft, I ran one for about a year and then had a scary failure where the shaft seperated and I had no steering. I've been meaning to create a thread to warn everyone but I'll try to post the pics in a minute. Someone smarter than me could probably have avoided the failure but it was still a bummer for sure. Just be aware that they can fail.

Btw, what time zone are you in over there?

Well I don't have the pics of the failed shaft on Photobucket and I'm at work right now. I'll try to dig them up when I get home this afternoon and post them then.

What happened though is that the top part came loose around the rubber isolator somehow and was just twisting around on the rubber part without turning the lower part of the shaft. As long as the truck was running, it would still steer but I would hear a popping sound. Then one day the truck broke down and I had to push it. It wouldn't run so I tried to turn the wheel with no power steering and the wheel just spun without moving the tires. I wonder how long it would have been before the shaft quit turning the wheels when it was running too. :eek1:

whats going on here......:cool:for some reason I didn't get and "instant alert" when posts were made to this thread :sign5:

Sorry Andy didn't see your responces, I'm on the east coast time zone. I haven't heard of the xj shaft failures you describe though I havent researched them enough to know all the ins and outs.. I do know that I emailed a guy on here or was it Pirate that welded them right where you are talking about... I havent put mine in yet; it being my dd doesnt help ether. I've got to have everything I could concievably need on hand for the weekend wrenching sessions... And I'm lazy..Maybe its the heat or the ladies

I ended up buying some nice 40x18x16.5 Grounghawgs on Bart Super Trucker rims from a guy in Bushland Texas yesterday and I'm working on getting them shipped (I've got a thread in the garage section). I bought a capped/tapped steering box from a guy on here and thats on the way too. Has anyone bought from here before http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/steering/ramassist.htm
or am I being nieve and should I do some more research.
My plan is to run the stock tie rod w the assist where the stabilizer is mounted and lengthen the neck on the PS pump for extra capacity along with the ram and the box. I'm thinkin about some springless caps for the 60 as well, they might make the front end feel nice and tight w the big rubber.. Anyone got anything to add? Also can anybody give me their experience with 52ing the front as far as streetability, sag, 52 lift springs, and general thoughts... Thanks guys!
