Little Input + 12V Cummins Swap

Larry-
1991 was the only year the 4L80E was utilized with the NP205, according to everybody I have read/seen. The 4L80 PCM (computer) came in a stand-alone, diesel version for a few years that would theoretically work with whichever engine you choose. If you go with a stick, you could weld blocks to the pedals like my dad did for me when I was a kid :)

Thanks Hale! I really appreciate that info. I'll defenatly use that in my research and post how I make out. Do you know if in addition to the diesel was the 4L80E found behind the 454 and 350? Thanks again.

The 4L80E was THE auto trans used in 1991. 350, 454, 6.2L, whatever the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks had.

Do you still have the bench seat in your truck? If so, maybe you could ditch it and install some bucket seats. That's what I did and if you find the right ones, you can slide the seat back and still be able to reach everything. Just a thought.

At least now that you're back in the Northeast, you won't have to pay and wait for shipping as much as you were before. :D

Hey Andy, yeah I still have the bench. One of my plans was to Put captains chairs in the front, that with a tilt colum and a stick might b doable. If my 4L80e plan doesn't work out I'll prob go to a nv4500... I wonder if a SM465 could handle a 6B...?

I'm sure the SM465 is more than capable of handling the Cummins. It's at least as strong as if not stronger than the NV4500, from what I've seen and heard. Much cheaper to find and rebuild most of the time too. No overdrive though of course. Not sure how fast the low RPM diesel could get up to with no overdrive.

If you do a stick swap go with the 4500 over the 465 it has a fifth gear already. There are no fixes for a Chevy 4500 fifth gear that I have found, tons for a Dodge, but not a Chevy.

Interesting... Can we not assume it would b the same fix?

I was reading in the new Diesel Power a little tidbit about the 4L80E they are using in their Suburban project; they mention that 4L80Es were used in military Hummers.... Anybody know if they also used an np205 in any early Hummers?

No. NV218 and NV242. HMMWV's have always been all wheel drive.

Whats up fellas.. Question; correct me if I'm wrong but I will not need the VSS sensor that came in the 91 gas jobs if I'm going with a stand alone comp for the 4L80E behind the cummins, correct?

Self admitted double post... Anybody got a preferred shipper I can use to get my truck from Miami to Maine early to mid April? Thanks guys!

that is cause the 5th doesn't have a problem in a chevy.

tell that to mine it didn't know any better and came apart. It is a Chevy 4500 behind a 5.9. Has a Dodge input and Dodge bell housing with a 205 hanging off the back.

Digging this project! Its awesome to see what you've been able to accomplish even in the Virgin Islands. The wife and I just came back from St. Thomas in Feb. and for sure - that's a different world there and you've got to be pretty resourceful if you are gonna make it! Your truck is awesome... Love it.

Thanks Mike I appreciate the kind words. The project was definitely a labor of love. Unfortunatly it's for sale in the classifieds. At this point I have 0 time to dedicate to her and I can't stand to keep looking at it...

That's a bummer for sure. I just hope you don't look back and regret selling it. I've done that before. Of course I only remember the good stuff about the stuff I sold when I look back though. Nevermind how crazy it drove me and how glad I was to get rid of it at the time.

So are you still up in Maine or what?
