LMC Tailgate Review / Completed!

But then, not to be forgotten, I get to look forward to installing all of the internals.... Which I'm sure is going to be a blast...

I do not envy you doing that job. I hope you can get some pics as you do it, just in case I have to do that one day. :o

Thank you very much! It's nowhere near the caliber of other trucks here, but it serves it's purpose bouncing me around the desert :D

Well, got back from vacation and decided to pick the gate up at the body shop!:D And wow, those guys can lay some paint! It looks absolutely amazing and I couldn't be happier with the quality, but unfortunately the paint color doesn't match up too well:dunno: Its not terribly far off,(Looks better than bondo, rust, and a dent that looks like a crater:crazy:) but I got a killer deal on it, so I didn't want to make it a big deal. I knew going in that it wasn't going to be perfect, and maybe I'm just being stupid about it. Who knows! I'm also planning on getting the entire truck painted within a few years so whatever. But quality wise, its great! I wished the entire truck looked as good as this tailgate does!

In these pictures, it really doesn't look too far off.

But then in these pictures:

But anyways, you can't see the back and the sides at the same time!:D And it will definitely be the prettiest panel panel on the whole truck:whistle:

Now I just have to wait for one more LMC package, and then I can start swapping over all of the internals.....:o

Nice! Looking forward to See when you but it together, I Will do this on My own K5 next winter so all info are great! Let us now about the internal things you ordered from lmc! My own experience from lmc are good and bad some things i bougth from the has worked and fits just like oem and a few other things has realy hade a not good at all kines nock of feeling!
So please let me now what you think.

Did you have the painter try to match the back plate cover or did the painter go from the OEM paint formula

Let us now about the internal things you ordered from lmc!

I honestly ordered just about everything besides the internal gears and a few others parts that don't get any wear.(This is a manual window, not power) Off the top of my head, I ordered all new weatherstripping, new external crank, new cables, new tracks for the glass, new handle which opens the gate, and new top "caps" that are on both sides of the gate. I'm probably forgetting a few things to be honest too. So far the quality has been good on everything, but I see what you're saying, LMC can be iffy on some things. But in this situation, I am sort of handcuffed. Not too many companies sell reproduction parts for these tailgates it seems.

I had the painter match the paint from the code inside of the glove box. I had the back panel off and really didn't care to have it painted with the gate since you rarely see it anyways. & you have to remember modern paints now are base coat/clear coat, not single stage how they used to be. So that's probably the reason for it looking different. I wanted this gate to look as good as it could and match decently, but the reason for me painting it was more function over form instead of form over function at this time. But either ways, I'm happy with it! It will definitely look a lot better than what I had before! And will look right at home after i get the whole entire truck painted!

Don't worry guys, I haven't forgotten about this thread! Just ran into to an annoying brake issue that needs to be sorted out first and has been consuming most of my time. (You can find it in the 73-91 section) Am really looking forward to finishing this tailgate up shortly though! Just hang in there guys!:waytogo:

Would like to see the body lines when you have this installed.

Well guys, sorry about the delay, but the tailgate is done!:saweet: Got it back on the truck and I am pretty pleased with it! (Even though the paint doesn't even remotely match the rest of the truck....:rotfl:) But hey, I got a good deal on the paint so whatever! But anyways, quality wise, I would give it an A. Not quite an A+ because it isn't made here in the states(to be expected), and secondly because the gauge of the steel isn't terribly far off, but its probably not quite OEM spec. Other than that, all of the holes, brackets and everything else lined up perfectly. The internals of the tailgate definitely do look complicated when you take the access panel off, but it honestly just looks more complicated than it really is. Most of the internals just fall into place. Pictures will also help you upon reassembly.

The only issue I had ran into was with the weatherstripping that runs against the glass on the outside and inside. I tried installing it a few times, but I didn't want to screw it up so I decided to go back to the body shop and asked them if they could do it for me. guy came out and literally did it perfectly in 10 minutes free of charge.

But overall, I couldn't be happier with the finished product and I would definitely recommend this product to anyone in need of a new tailgate!:waytogo:

BTW, I will also post pictures tonight after I wash it.

Well I guess this is it guys! Thanks to everyone who has been following this and keeping it interesting!:waytogo: & If anyone has any question on anything related to the tailgate, feel free to ask me! More than happy to answer questions!

not bad at all. It's amazing what a set of 33's or 35's and a 4" lift can do for the appearance of these rigs. It looks funny with the stock tires on it.

I like the color on the tailgate.

Congrats dude, glad you were able to get it all back together!

Oh yeah, you're not kidding! I actually got this truck as my first vehicle and have spent most of my money fixing things on it.. By next year, I will be starting my career working full time, and will have a cruze or something as a daily, so I should be able to start doing bigger things to it!

I plan on doing a 3" lift and 33's, but we will see how it goes! I just want it to have a "stocky" look to it, but still feel somewhat comfortable cruising 300 miles on the highway.. Time will tell!

& Yes, the color of the tailgate will hopefully someday be the color of the whole truck:D The 30 year old recalled paint surely shows its age:whistle:

Thanks man, I really appreciate it!:waytogo: & Sorry I didn't go into more detail about swapping the internals, but it's honestly pretty straight forward! It probably took me 2 hours to gut the old tailgate and put all of the internals into the new tailgate... Most things only go one way, so it's pretty hard to screw it up.. Just take your time and take a few pictures along the way if you ever find yourself doing this!

The only part that I find truly difficult is the weatherstripping along the glass, but that's why I took it back to the body shop and had them do it!:D

Most body shops would repaint/tint the tailgate to match better. Did they match paint chips or use a reference like the old one? I worked at a body shop for a few years and that is what we would do.

Nonetheless it looks great. Thanks for the pics
