Lockers

or you could get a winch. A traction aid in the rear axle will do wonders as well.
I did order a winch, I’m just irritated that I got stuck in that spot and after I got helped out I seen a few newer trucks go right over that dang hole. I was embarrassed I couldn’t make it and had to be pulled by a ATV lol.

I would rather make it through than find my gloves, get out in the mud, pull the line, find an anchor, make the pull and re-spool the line.
That’s exactly my thought. I will be adding a winch for situations I really need it but for a pot hole I want to be able to drive through it

You will be happy with the lock right or the spartan.
Easy to install and very smooth in my experience.
I had it on ice and snow and I wouldn't say it was scary as long as you were driving like you're on ice.
I know some people feel invincible if they have a 4x4 or a locker.
It's just a little edge.
An added benefit but you still need to drive smart

I hear you, and have traction aids in both axles, and a winch.

The rock @Blazer Ralph added help the new trucks get though.

Awesome thank you so much for this info I really appreciate you

For the rare occasion you will need it I would look into a selectable locker. The full lockers are not much fun on ice or snow. And you have to learn to drive with them. You kinda have to coast around corners to keep them from binding and going bang when they release. And there is a notable wear in tires. I run a Detroit in mine and can get scary with icy conditions.

Didn’t hit it fast enough!

I think the locker will fix your issue, when you get articulated like that and the weight is on two diagonal tires, the other two tires with no weight on them spin and you don't go anywhere, the locker will fix that.

I would go with a full size locker as it's stronger, and yeah, they have to redo the backlash setting on the ring gear but they do not have to touch the pinion depth or preload so it's much quicker than a whole gear setup and IMO worth it.

Do you know if the rear end is open now or if it has the G80 Gov-lock? If it came with one, the RPO G80 would be on the glove box sticker, but in a 44-year-old truck you can't count on anything being stock. If it worked, you would have been able to get out of the hole after 1 wheel spun and the differential locked. However, they sometimes break and don't engage anymore. They don't make a drop-in lunchbox locker for that differential.

If he had the g80 he wouldn't have been stuck in a small puddle.
Pretty sure he has the open rear end

Like I said, sometimes they don't engage. If he had a working G80, his tire would have dropped in a hole, the other tire would have spun, the mechanism would have engaged, the differential would have shattered and launched chunks of spider gears through the cover. :D

Probably the only way to be sure is pop the cover and look, so it probably makes sense to have the new part on hand at that point anyway. But...by buying a full carrier device, it's not an issue.
